NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP, the song, “Megalomania”, by Black Sabbath. Now I love the whole song “Megalomania” because it’s weird and freaky progressive rock. But the part that starts at 3:22, is where the song picks up and rocks heavy. So that’s where I began the song tonight and then I cut out the last 2 minutes of the fade out because it’s too long. And I remember Dirty Jim saying if only that middle part of the song was a separate song, that would be awesome. That one’s for you Dirty Jim. I hope you appreciate my professionally edited version of Megalomania.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP, the song, “Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy (The Electric Drill song)”, by Mr. Big. I love the fact that in this song, both Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan use cordless drills over their guitar and bass strings played in harmony, IN HARMONY I said, to create a wickedly fast solo which obviously is not possible to replicate with their hands. But this is such a cool tune and I love Paul Gilbert’s little pinch harmonics in the main riff. And I also love the fact that both Billy Sheehan and Paul Gilbert, who are virtuosos who can shred circles around any musician, decided to form a commercial melodic rock band, which forced them to slow down, relatively speaking, and concentrate on the songs and melodies as a whole. And Mr. Big has some awesome tunes with a musical quirkiness that only prodigies can come up with.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP, the song, “Super Nova”, by Saxon on the “GenX Rock Double Shot”. Another slamming track by the mighty SAXON!! So when I saw the name Andy Sneap as the Producer on the albums “Sacrifice” and “Battering Ram”, I didn’t know who he was at the time, and I thought, finally someone that helped to change the Saxon sound to match the bands image and lyrical content. And so the last six Saxon album that have been produced by Andy Sneap (who by the way is now the 2nd guitarist in Judas Priest and their producer for Firepower and Invincible Shield), the last six Saxon albums have progressively received better production and a heavier sound, which I’m loving. But out of the last six Saxon albums, the album I recommend listening to from beginning to end is “Carpe Diem”, which features the last two songs I played “Remember the Fallen” and “Super Nova”. I’ve also played the title track on a previous show a few months back. That is your homework assignment for this week. Can you imagine being in a class in high school or college where you have to listen to awesome Rock and Metal albums every week and then prepare comments on your thoughts about the music? I’d sign up for that class immediately!

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP, the song, “Remember the Fallen”, by Saxon on the “GenX Rock Double Shot”. That track was so METAL!! Saxon formed nearly 50 years ago in 1975. And I’ll be honest. When Saxon appeared on the scene as one of the bands at the forefront of the NWOBHM movement (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal), I wasn’t really into them. Mainly because I didn’t like the sound of their guitar production and the songs, to me, were kind of weak. They didn’t have the power of Sabbath or Priest or Maiden. It wasn’t until 2013 with the album “Sacrifice” followed by “Battering Ram” in 2015 that I took notice of Saxon again. I noticed the production sound of the guitars changed. It became heavier and fuller.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP, the song, “Think About You”, by Guns ‘n Roses. When Guns ‘n Roses released Appetite For Destruction in 1987 I was not impressed at all. I thought they were a sleazy, profanity laced copycat of Aerosmith. Some of the music was good like “Welcome to the Jungle”, “Patience” and a few others. But I really like this song “Think About You”. It’s a clean lyric song and I dig the arpeggiated clean tone guitar in the chorus. And then they started hand clapping in the background during the guitar solo, like an old school Beatles song. Every time I hear hand clapping in a song it just makes me smile.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP, the song, “Fast As A Shark”, by ACCEPT. The opening, crackly folk music to "Fast As A Shark" is a short snippet from a traditional German children's song called "Ein Heller und ein Batzen" which translates to "A Farthing and a Penny" in English. What is a Farthing? A Farthing is a quarter of a penny. See, not only is GenX Rock Hidden Treasures a great radio show to hear awesome tunes but it’s also educational! The album is best known for Stefan Kaufmann's double kick drumming on this song, which is considered a precursor of thrash metal, preceding the debut releases of both Metallica and Slayer.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP, the song, “Say What You Will”, by Myles Kennedy. Most of you may be familiar with Myles Kennedy as the lead singer for Slash with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators as well as the lead vocalist and rhythm guitar for Alter Bridge with Mark Tremonti (formerly of Creed). So it’s cool to hear Myles not only sing, but also play all the rhythm and all lead guitar solos, since most of the time all the flashy guitar stuff is handled by either Slash or Mark Tremonti. But I really like the dark and heavy main riff and his vocals are stellar. Myles Kennedy is one super talented dude!

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP, the song, “Screaming For Vengeance”, by Judas Priest. From the first time I heard this song 42 years ago up to today, I’m still in awe of Rob Halford’s high-pitched gravely vocal. I love everything about this song from Halford’s vocals, to the up-tempo riffage to the back and forth guitar solo between KK Downing and Glenn Tipton leading to a classic Judas Priest dual harmonized guitar melody to end the solo. It’s one of my favorite songs on the album.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP, the song, “1 2 3 4”, by RAIL. Wow, talk about a blast from the past! If you were an avid MTV watcher like I was in the 80s, RAIL was a band from the Bellevue Seattle, WA area that won the very first “MTV Basement Tapes” contest. And the band was celebrating at a local club when MTV VJ Martha Quinn called to get the band’s reaction to their victory, which earned them a record contract with EMI America for a 4-song EP and new video. And the video that was filmed was for this song, “1 2 3 4”. And I liked the song when I saw the video. It was anthemic with a heavy guitar riff and the perfect concert crowd sing a long.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP, the song, “Stand Or Fall” by Anthrax. What a slamming thrash track! I love Joey Belladonna's vocals and Charlie Benante's double bass drumming is stellar! Spreading The Disease is my favorite Anthrax album for sure. Long live 80s Thrash!

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP, the song, “Box Of Rain” by Grateful Dead. As the first song on American Beauty, it was also the first Grateful Dead song released on record to feature Phil Lesh as the lead vocalist. I wasn’t a Deadhead or a huge fan as a kid in the 70s and 80s, but I do love the album American Beauty and a few tracks from some other albums. So Rest In Peace to Phil Lesh.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP, the song, “Killers” by Iron Maiden. My love of 80s Iron Maiden started with Paul Di’anno. I was 13 yrs old in 1981 and my older brother had bought me for Xmas my very first boombox with a cassette player. Up until then, I had only bought a bunch of KISS records on vinyl. So I went to my local record store in Naugatuck, CT called Music Plus near my high school, and I bought my very first two cassette tapes. One was Blizzard of Ozz by Ozzy and the 2nd was Killers by Iron Maiden. I immediately fell in love with Iron Maiden Killers. Of course it was the music that captivated me, but I had no problem with Paul Di’anno’s vocals. I always thought he was a good vocalist for the first two Maiden albums. This was of course before Bruce Dickinson became the lead singer. So my introduction to Iron Maiden music was with Paul Di’anno. And those first two Iron Maiden albums are very nostalgic to me. So REST IN POWER to Paul Di’anno. You’re music will be remembered by legions of fans.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP, the song, “No Stranger to Love” by Black Sabbath. This was the album released after “Born Again” that was originally intended as a Tony Iommi solo album because it sounds nothing like any of the Ozzy-era or DIO-era Sabbath albums. This is one of the few true ballads by Black Sabbath. I love the haunting keyboard intro by Geoff Nichols, and the lead vocals by Glenn Hughes are amazing. But the star of course is the guitar playing of Tony Iommi. You can actually hear the sadness in the note choices by Tony. It definitely scratches my occasional melancholy itch.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP, the song, “Shattered” by Pantera. I dig the fact that Phil Anselmo sings with his high-pitched vocal through most of this song. This is the last Pantera album with some songs that Anselmo still used traditional operatic vocals and screams. After this album, Phil Anselmo completely transitioned to harsh and guttural vocals and hardcore screams, which personally is not my style at all. In fact, my favorite Pantera album is called Power Metal released in 1988, which is what I label as heavy glam thrash. But it’s no longer available since it’s out of print. But thankfully you can go to YouTube and enjoy the full album there!
