on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Creeping Death” by Metallica. That was an absolute, bona fide classic Thrash song AND album if I ever heard one. In 1984, this was a completely new and unique sound. Not only was this album heavy as hell, but there was also a progressive element mixed with melodicism. It was the whole package for me and I loved it!!

on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Wings Of Steel” by Wings of Steel. I continue to be amazed by the new bands that I’m discovering that sound like old-school traditional heavy metal from the 80s. Didn’t that sound like a band from the 80s? This eponymous track had awesome guitar riffage, melodic guitar solo and soaring operatic vocals. These guys are from my hometown of Los Angeles and founded by Leo Unnermark and guitarist Parker Halub. And they are truly an independent band with no label support. So if you liked what you heard. Go to their website wingsofsteelband.com and check them out.

on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Panic” by Anthrax. This album features original lead singer Neil Turbin and it’s his only appearance on an Anthrax album. I remember going to the record store in 1984 and I saw this album cover at Music Plus at the MountView Plaza in Naugatuck, CT and I thought the album cover was so elementary and raw and yet it looked sick. And when I saw track titles like “Metal Thrashing Mad” and “Soldiers of Metal”, I was like, “TAKE MY MONEY!!”. Now 40 years later, I still listen to Fistful of Metal because it's so nostalgic for me and it was a solid foundation for Anthrax to build upon.

on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Bad Mind” by Awaiting Abigail. Awaiting Abigail is a brand new band from the Dallas/Fort Worth TX area. I totally dig the classic heavy main riff of this track and I also love finding female fronted bands for my buddy RockaRolla Jay Williams at the Judas Priestcast podcast. Not only is the music by Awaiting Abigail really cool, but what a striking album cover and I love the band logo. You can tell it’s very professionally done. And when I saw a picture of the band on their website, I love the fact that one of the guitar players, Mike, is wearing a Judas Priest t-shirt, c’mon that says it all right there. So check out Awaiting Abigail online and all social media and we look forward to seeing them come to Hollywood and play at Whisky A Go-Go on the Sunset Strip this Summer. So stay tuned for that.

on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Better in the Dark” by DIO. For all of you regular listeners, you know how much of a huge DIO fan I am. But I’m not too crazy about his albums released in the 1990’s. But when Killing the Dragon was released in 2002, it sounded like an album released in the 1980’s. In fact, if I told anyone nonchalantly this album was released in the 80s and they heard the album, they would agree. And the guitarist on this album is Doug Aldrich who is a phenomenal guitar player with a great tone. If you’re a DIO fan but haven’t heard this whole album from beginning to end, the way we used to listen to albums growing up, do yourself a favor and check it out.

on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Vilified” by Jerry Cantrell. Very cool song from his latest album which has been touted as Cantrell’s return to a metal-influenced sound, characterized by heavy riffs, similar to his work with Alice in Chains. In addition, I’ve always loved Jerry Cantrell’s vocals as a major part of the Alice In Chains sound. As far as the lyrical content of Vilified, the lyrics indicate a negative personification of artificial intelligence, referring to the misinformation it may spread. Check out the new album "I Want Blood".

on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Believer” by Ozzy Osbourne. To this day, I’m still amazed and entertained by the guitar solos by the legendary guitar virtuoso Randy Rhoads. And I also love the classic guitar riff he played during the verses. And even though it’s widely known that Ozzy didn’t write most of the lyrics in his songs, he’s the one who came up with all these great vocal melody lines over the contrasting musical melodies and riffs. We love you Ozzy!

on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “I Don’t Need Anyone” by SUM 41. Heaven :x: Hell is a double album split between pop-punk and heavy metal. The Heaven side of the album has been compared to the pop-punk sound of their debut studio album, “All Killer No Filler” (2001). The Hell side has been compared to the heavier sound of their third studio album “Chuck” (2004). This new album “Heaven :x: Hell” has also been described as skate punk, alternative rock, and alternative metal. But I was shocked at how heavy this song was and then doubly shocked, doubly, is that a word? Anyway I was doubly shocked when at the 2:10 mark there was a fast ripping guitar. I didn’t think SUM 41 had the ability to handle playing a heavy metal style guitar solo.
And it kinda makes sense because the very first time I heard SUM 41, they had a huge hit in 2001 with the song “Fat Lip”. And that was a heavy pop-punk track and one of the lines in the lyrics says, “Heavy Metal and mullets is how we were raised. Maiden and Priest were the Gods that we praised.”. So I always wondered if they would eventually record a hard rockin’ metal album, and they did. So, if you guys are open minded, check out this album “Heaven :x: Hell” by SUM 41.

on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Flash Of the Blade” by Iron Maiden. For all you Maiden fans out there, including Ron Stonis “The Iron Maiden Dude” from PA, UP THE IRONS you frickin’ metalheads!! What a great trilogy of back to back to back albums by Maiden in the 1980s. Starting with The Number of the Beast, then Piece Of Mind and then Powerslave. These three albums truly cemented the legacy of arguably the most beloved international heavy metal band in history.

on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Preacher” by Dead City Ruins. Dead City Ruins formed in Melbourne, Australia in 2010 and they are signed to AFM Records with the current lineup consisting of founding guitarist Tommy Cain, Sean Blanchard on guitar, Thomas Murphy on Bass, drummer Nick Trajanovski and new lead singer Steve Welsh. And this dude sounds at times like Sebastian Bach. Steve Welsh has a killer raspiness to his vocal delivery and the band definitely captures the essence of 70s and 80s heavy melodic rock but with great production and a modern feel. I love it!!

on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Deranged” by Exodus. Pleasures of the Flesh is the first Exodus album to feature Steve Souza on vocals after Paul Baloff was fired from the band. When I bought this album in 1987, I was so happy at how good the production quality was, especially the sound of the guitars. I love the massive sound of crunching, chainsaw distorted riffs. But I’m not sure what Declan thinks from NOISE NOISE NOISE. The vocals of Steve Souza are super gritty but you can still understand what he’s singing. Which is probably a deal breaker for Declan. Up next on 99.1 FM KLBP is a show called NOISE NOISE NOISE hosted by Declan. And he plays a variety of hardcore, punk, sasscore, screamo, metalcore, deathcore and whatever else is noisy!

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Do Or Die” by Elegant Weapons. Elegant Weapons features guitarist Richie Faulkner from Judas Priest and vocalist Ronnie Romero who was also the lead singer for Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow, Michael Schenker Group, Vandenberg and other projects in addition to his own solo band. But Elegant Weapons has done a great job of crafting some really cool metal tracks with a melodic sensibility. If you haven’t done so, check out their debut album, “Horns For A Halo”.

on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Children of the Sea” by Black Sabbath. After a chance meeting in 1979 between Ronnie James Dio and Tony Iommi at the Rainbow Bar and Grill on the Sunset Strip, Ronnie got together with Tony and Tony played him the opening arpeggiated intro to this song. Ronnie loved it and said “Give me a few minutes. I have some ideas for lyrics”. And according to Dio the lyrics easily flowed and “Children of the Sea” became the first new Black Sabbath song written by Ronnie James Dio. This song is breathtaking! From the ballad-like intro with Ronnie’s floating vocals, to the raspy vocal attack throughout the verses and chorus, to the Gregorian monks chanting in harmony with the guitar melody in the bridge, “Children of the Sea” is one of my favorite songs on this landmark album!

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Me The Nothing” by Metal Church. The first time I saw Metal Church in concert was at the Agora Ballroom in West Hartford, CT opening up for Metallica on Nov 30, 1986, which was only two months after the death of Cliff Burton. And then I saw Metal Church only 7 months later on June 4, 1987 opening up for Anthrax at the same place. Concerts back then were so much fun when were young and seemingly invincible. Fast forward 37 years and I recently saw Metal Church at The Whisky A Go Go on the Sunset strip on Sept 24, 2023 on the “Congregation of Annihilation” tour and it was an amazing show with new vocalist Marc Lopes. And they played this song “Me The Nothing”, which I absolutely love for so many reasons. The melodic structure of the guitar progression is fantastically satisfying to me, and Marc Lopes killer vocals are the closest in raspy tonality to the original lead singer David Wayne.

on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Long Stick Goes Boom” by Krokus. After the AC/DC-esque intro, when the band goes into the main guitar riff. It’s sounds a little like the chorus for Love Hungry Man on the album Highway To Hell. This band Krokus was like the Swiss version of AC/DC and I loved it. I absolutely love the high-pitched gravely vocals by Marc Storace and the rhythm and lead guitar sound is so satisfying. I don’t care that it sounds like AC/DC. To me this is great rock’n’roll.
