NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Loud ‘N’ Proud” by Pretty Maids. This is the album that introduced me to Pretty Maids. In fact, I believe I read about this band in Hit Parader or Circus magazine and then I heard the title track future world on the radio show MetalShop with Charlie “The Butcher” Kendall, who’s actually been doing brand new MetalShop shows within the last year.
It’s funny how much lead singer Ronnie Atkins sounds like the lead singer Parramore “Perry” McCarty from Radiation Romeos that we played a few songs back. When I first heard this album back in 1987, it took me a little while to get into it because it has a lot of keyboards and I didn’t like keyboards much in my style of metal. But the guitars in this band was so crunchy and metal sounding that I stuck with the band and ended up liking their style of music.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Fight To Be Free” by Twisted Tower Dire. Twisted Tower Dire formed in 1995 in Chantilly, Virginia. And this song “Fight To Be Free” has that classic Power Metal sound and musical structure that I love. It actually sounds like European Power Metal moreso than American Power Metal. I totally dig how the tempo changes during the harmonized gang vocals in the chorus to this triumphant sound with the double bass drumming giving the song a hefty boost of aggression. I love it.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Radiation Romoes” by Radiation Romeos. Radiation Romeos is a band formed by lead singer Parramore “Perry” McCarty, formerly of the band Warrior and he was also the lead singer for Billy Idol’s guitarist Steve Stevens solo project called Atomic Playboys. In fact, the name Radiation Romeos came from a line in the title track Atomic Playboys in 1989. I liked this song a lot. It has a good mid-tempo groove and the production on the guitars sound great with a nice a sing a long chorus. It sounds like one of those songs you can open your car windows and crank while taking scenic car ride.

Thank you to ACCEPT lead singer Mark Tornillo for the shout out. I really appreciate it. NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Teutonic Terror” by ACCEPT. The album “Blood of the Nations” is the first album after a 14 year hiatus, and it’s a phenomenal revitalization of the band ACCEPT with new lead singer, as of 2010, Mark Tornillo, formerly of TT Quick. He has a similar vocal style to Udo Dirkschneider, but with a little more melodicism in his vocals. I saw this tour on Jan 5, 2011 in Santa Ana, CA and got a chance to meet founding member and guitarist Wolf Hoffman while I helped to record an interview of Wolf Hoffman done by Andrew Bansal of Metal Assault.com. Wolf was a really awesome guy to chat with and I even have a cool picture with him that I cherish to this day. If you want to see a picture of me with Wolf Hoffman, go to my page by searching for GenX Rock Hidden Treasures with DJ Hollywood and please click FOLLOW on my page to see all my content.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Now!” by Scorpions for the “Long Distance DJ Triple Play” selected by Ron “The Iron Maiden Dude”. This is a fast upbeat rocker that talks about the power of rock n roll music to lift us up and make us feel good. And that’s how I feel when listening to music. I live in the present moment, right NOW, while listening to every aspect of the instruments, the vocals, the melody line, the chord structure and changes. So when listening to music you love, just try to live in the moment right now. And you’ll realize that music truly is a gift. And that’s why is called the Present.
Alright, that was the “Long Distance DJ Triple Play”. Thank you to Ron “The Iron Maiden Dude” from Pittsburgh, PA for submitting your setlist. If you’d like to submit a 3-song mini setlist, just DM me at GenX Rock Hidden Treasures on Facebook or Instagram, Or email me directly at [email protected] or [email protected]

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “United” by Judas Priest for the “Long Distance DJ Triple Play” selected by Ron “The Iron Maiden Dude”. United was the 3rd single from British Steel which is considered by many as Judas Priest’s breakout album. And the reason Ron “The Iron Maiden Dude” chose this song is “just the fact that two guys from opposite ends of the country can meet in Puerto Rico and become friends just because of METAL proves how great this genre is.” And I totally agree. Anytime that any of us Hard Rock / Metalheads see another person with a concert t-shirt that we love, it’s so easy to connect and bond over the great music we grew up with.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Drifter” by Iron Maiden for the “Long Distance DJ Triple Play” selected by Ron “The Iron Maiden Dude”. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve played this song and this whole album Killers. In fact, this was the first cassette tape I ever bought along with Blizzard of Ozz by Ozzy back in 1981. And I wore out both of those cassettes. But this song with original led singer Paul Dianno has a bouncy, p***y, rock and roll feel with a metal edge that I totally dig. Let’s go on to Ron’s 2nd song selection, which he chose all from the early 80s.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Lux AEterna” by Metallica. This is a quick song. It grabs you by the throat from the start and pummels you in the head for the next 3:25 seconds. James Hetfield describes the song as “and upbeat, kind of fast and joyous song” furthermore describing it as being in the style of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.
The term “Lux AEterna” is a latin phrase meaning Eternal Light, which taken in the context of artistic inspiration, lines up with other composers who’ve written pieces titled “Lux AEterna” that were dedicated to a deceased loved one. By reading the lyrics, it doesn’t really sound like James Hetfield had that in mind, but that’s the awesome thing about song lyrics. Many times, songs simply allow the listeners to invoke their own interpretation to the song, which personalizes the music to each individual. And that’s just ONE of many things that I love about the ART OF MUSIC!

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Stay With You” by The Hellacopters. The Hellacopters are from Stockholm, Sweden and they called themselves “fuel injected action rock”. And I’d say that’s pretty accurate. They definitely have a modern garage rock feel with a punk edge and 70s classic rock vibe with the sound of the piano with the fuzz distorted guitars. I love it! If you liked that, check them out. That’s The Hellacopters and the song “Stay With You”.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP the song, “Digital Dictator” by Vicious Rumers. Vicious Rumors originally formed in 1979 in the San Francisco Bay area of California. And this is the first album introducing new lead vocalist Carl Albert who recorded 4 albums with the band before his untimely death in a car accident in 1995. I love this title track and sound of the power metal on this album. And Carl Albert sounds great on vocals.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP, the song, “Rock Brigade” by Def Leppard. This album was produced by Tom Allom who famously engineered and produced albums by Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Krokus, KIX, Y&T and others. I love the early 80s Def Leppard with my favorite album being High ‘n’ Dry. But this debut album has some solid tracks where you can hear the foundation of classic melodic hard rock.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP, the song, “Like A Knife In The Back” by Twisted Sister. I've always loved Dee Snider's voice with that gritty aggressiveness. Awesome deep cut from a classic Twisted Sister album which is actually my favorite Twisted Sister album.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP, the song, “All Over Town” by April Wine. This album was April Wine's commercial peak, selling over 1 million copies and certified Platinum in the US and reaching #24 on the Billboard 200 album chart. “The Nature of the Beast” is the album which contained the hit singles “Sign of the Gypsy Queen” and “Just Between You and Me”. And this album is by no means a heavy metal album. This is old school classic rock n roll.

20/08/2024

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP, the song, “Winter” by Al Atkins on the “Long Distance DJ Triple Play” chosen by Jay Williams of the Judas Priestcast podcast. Many of you may already know that Al Atkins was the original lead singer for Judas Priest and not Rob Halford. In fact, Al Atkins wrote the song “Winter” along with KK Downing and Ian Hill before he left the band. And after hiring Rob Halford as the new lead singer, Judas Priest continued to perform the song in their setlist and eventually “Winter” ended up as a track on the debut Judas Priest album “Rocka Rolla” with Rob Halford on vocals.

Alright, that was the “Long Distance DJ Triple Play”. Thank you to Jay Williams from the Judas Priestcast podcast for submitting your setlist. And if you’d like to learn a little bit more about yours truly DJ Hollywood, you can hear me being interviewed on the Judas Priestcast podcast on Season 3, Episode 2 titled “Battle of the 9s with Hollywood” released on June 21, 2024. You can find the Judas Priestcast with Jay and Jeff on Spotify and all other major podcast platforms.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP, the song, “Escape From Reality” by Judas Priest on the “Long Distance DJ Triple Play” chosen by Jay Williams of the Judas Priestcast. What a fantastic song on a great new album by the mighty Judas Priest. The main heavy riff is what we hear under the chorus and then there’s this really cool psychedelic Bridge which uses a phaser effect on Rob Halford’s vocals that sounds a little like an Ozzy type vocal. Great stuff!

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP, the song, “Never Satisfied” by Judas Priest on the "Long Distance DJ Triple Play" chosen by Jay Williams from the Judas Priestcast. And I know this track is from one of Jay’s favorite Priest albums and there is a special 1970s quality and tone on this album that I also dig. You can hear the beginnings of the classic 70s Judas Priest sound on this song and I absolutely love the KK Downing crazy bluesy whammy bar middle guitar solo with the heavy reverb. And at the end of the song, millions of us metalhead fans hear for the first time the beginning of the legendary Rob Halford operatic scream.

20/08/2024

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP, the song, “Eat Me Up Alive” by RATT. Infestation is the seventh and final studio album by American glam metal band Ratt. It is the band's first original effort since their self-titled album in 1999, and the first album since the death of Robbin Crosby in 2002. This is the only album to feature guitarist Carlos Cavazo, formerly of Quiet Riot.

And I saw RATT on this Infestation Tour along with Extreme and they were really good and Carlos Cavazo fit right in with the band. Although I found a striking comparison between lead singers Stephen Pearcy of Ratt and Gary Cherone from Extreme. It seemed Stephen was moving around the stage slowly almost like he was possibly sick or he just didn’t care to put in the effort, I mean he was only 54 yrs old. On the other hand Gary Cherone from Extreme was super energetic and jumping, doing splits and running around on stage at age 49 and his body was cut and tone like he was a Yoga Master.

20/08/2024

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP, the song, “Don’t Let It End” by Yngwie Malmsteen. And as you heard that was some phenomenal 80s Neo-Classical shred metal with Jeff Scott Soto on lead vocals. In fact, Yngwie Malmsteen has arguably been credited with this new Neo-Classical shred movement which launched a number of other shredmeisters like Tony MacAlpine, Vinnie Moore, Paul Gilbert, Bruce Bouliet, Marty Friedman, Jason Becker, Chris Impellitteri, Michael Angelo Batio, Joey Tafolla and many more. Most of these guys have instrumental solo albums with a number that were in other bands that did have a vocalist. And the reason I know all this is because as a heavy metal guitarist in the 80s, I loved listening to instrumental metal and I tried to emulate these guys, which prompted me to eventually attend and graduate from G.I.T. at Musicians Institute in Hollywood.

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP, the song “World On Fire”. Firewind is a Greek power metal band formed in Thessaloniki in 1998 by guitarist Gus G, who later went on to become Ozzy’s guitarist on the 2010 album Scream. I love this song World On Fire. And I’ve seen Firewind before in concert at The Whisky A Go Go and they were fantastic.

20/08/2024

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP, the song “S.O.S. (Too Bad)”, which was released as their third single from their second album Get Your Wings. And Yes, it is TOO BAD what has happened to Steven Tyler and Aerosmith. By now most of you listening have heard the news that Aerosmith have officially retired from touring due to Steven Tyler sustaining irreparable damage from a fractured larynx during a performance. Their official statement reads in part:

“Some of you have been with us since the beginning and all of you are the reason we made rock ‘n’ roll history. It has been the honor of our lives to have our music become part of yours. In every club, on every massive tour and at moments grand and private you have given us a place in the soundtrack of your lives.

As you know, Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other. He has spent months tirelessly working on getting his voice to where it was before his injury. We’ve seen him struggling despite having the best medical team by his side. Sadly, it is clear, that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible. We have made a heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision - as a band of brothers - to retire from the touring stage.

A final thank you to you - the best fans on planet Earth. Play our music loud, now and always. Dream On. You’ve made our dreams come true.”

At this point in their lives, Aerosmith are legends of Rock N Roll. But Father Time catches up with everyone and for Steven Tyler, at 76 years of age, that time has come. Aerosmith is the best-selling American hard rock band of all time, having sold more than 150 million records worldwide, including over 85 million records in the United States alone. So to Steven Tyler and Aerosmith, all fans worldwide say a collective Thank You for giving us your music as a place in the soundtrack of our lives!

NOW PLAYING on 99.1 FM KLBP the song "Invaders" by Iron Maiden. This is the first Iron Maiden album with new lead singer Bruce Dickinson, formerly of the band Samson.
In an interview, founding member, bassist and primary lyricist, Steve Harris stated that the record's opening track, "Invaders", was not good enough, commenting that it "could have been replaced with something a bit better, only we didn't have anything else to replace it with at the time. We had just enough time to do what we did, and that was it."
From a fan perspective, I don’t get it. Invaders is an awesome opening track. It punches you in the face from the intro and it continues pummeling you with crunching, heavy metal goodness until the end.
