This week was a Jean Smith Designz moment! It brought me back to my love of learning – connecting new information and experiences.

A family member asked me to create a funeral wreath for her son’s homegoing celebration. Well, in all my years of creating designs for celebrations, (weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, women conferences,) I had never created a funeral wreath.

I was hesitant at first (the emotions of it all) but she asked so I took on the assignment.

I live by the philosophy that “it’s never too late to learn a new thing.” You just got to be willing. And, willing I was…

Let's not think of Juneteenth as just another day off from work, with little thought as to why the federal holiday was established.

Now is a great time to start new family traditions to celebrate and honor the Juneteenth holiday:

· Gather with your elders. Or give them a call, Juneteenth provides another time to reflect, rejoice and remember your ancestors.

· Talk to your children or grandchildren about the holiday.

· Plan a Family Feast! Focus on food with red hues as red foods are customary for Juneteenth because red is a symbol of ingenuity and resilience in bo***ge.

· Attend a local Juneteenth event or visit an African American Museum. If you can’t visit one in person, explore the resources online from the National Museum of African American History & Culture.

· Order in from a Black-Owned Business!

· Listen to Music. June is also Black Music Month! Teach your kids about freedom songs and spirituals.

We want to use the holiday to have meaningful conversations with our family and friends about the importance of Juneteenth.
