Collaborating with couples to create ceremonies filled with love and intention welcomes everyone into the intimacy of the moment. Here is the "Welcome" of a recent wedding I officiated at Loch Aerie Mansion, LLC .

Thank you for being present for this intimate moment and celebration of love. The power of gathering and blessing is beyond measure. The Irish poet, John O’Donohue, speaks eloquently of both. “There is an instinct that emerges when we get quiet with others. We know who is close. Our passion for life is quietly sustained from somewhere within us.” So, let us begin this evening by visiting this quiet place, embracing one another within our hearts, and sending blessings to.....

Today is Diwali, the festival of lights, celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains around the world! Many know the story of Diwali in the Hindu tradition: Rama and Sita returns home after defeating Ravana, and the people joyously light the kingdom with oil lamps. In the Jain tradition, Diwali marks Mahavira’s attainment of moksha in 527 BC. In the Sikh tradition, Diwali marks yet another kind of return: Bandi Chhor Divas, the Day of Liberation.

Here’s how the story was passed down to me. In 1619, the Mhogal Emperor Jahangir, hungry for power, imprisoned Guru Hargobind, our sixth Sikh guru (teacher). The people cried out for his release, and so the Emperor finally agreed to release the Guru. The Guru refused to leave unless he also freed the other fifty-two Hindu princes languishing in detention with him. The Emperor granted his wish but on one condition: only those who can hold on to the Guru’s clothes would be released. Surely, he wouldn’t lose too many prisoners that way. The Guru ordered the making of a special cloak with fifty-two tassels. As the Guru walked out of the gates of the prison, the fifty-two princes followed, each holding on to his own corner of the dazzling cloak. Guru Hargobind became known as Bandi-Chhor, Liberator. And when he returned home, the people lit candles to commemorate the return of all, Bandi Chhor Divas.

May we be released from prisons of all kinds, including the ones we build around ourselves. And when we find our way to the light, may we leave no one behind. Happy Diwali! Happy Bandi Chhor Divas!

It is both, the tomb and the womb. In the wake of so much death and destruction, what if this moment is igniting the energy and action that can, with focus and precision and stamina, birth a world of dignity and justice for all?

This is a place for anyone who feels breathless. Your breathlessness is not a sign of your weakness; it is a sign of your bravery. It means that you are awake to what’s happening right now: The world is in transition.

You don't have to transform your whole life in this moment, but you can transform this moment with your presence and the peace that you choose to bring to it.

I sometimes forget
that I was created for Joy.
My mind is too busy.
My Heart is too heavy
for me to remember
that I have been
called to dance
the Sacred dance of life.
I was created to smile
To Love
To be lifted up
And to lift others up.
O’ Sacred One
Untangle my feet
from all that ensnares.
Free my soul.
That we might
Dance
and that our dancing
might be contagious.

In these days when the torrents of grief flood deep,
when sorrow pools like blood on the floor,
in these days when I can do nothing but meet this moment,
when I am too spent to say hello,
love comes to meet me where I am.
It holds me while I cry. It cradles me where I sit.
It steps with me as I walk. There was, at first,
a moment when I tried to push it away,
alarmed by this onslaught of love.
Too much, I protested, arms up in resistance,
but love obliterated my no.
It moved in to hold me from the inside,
slipped into my tissue, my bones,
it infused itself into each tiny cell, each organelle,
and made inside me a home. Since that moment,
I am never alone. Now it is love that moves my hand.
Love that shapes each word. Love that helps me rise.
Love that pours the tea.
Love that wakes with me in the middle of the night.
Autonomic love that makes the heart beat,
autonomic love that makes the lungs breathe.
autonomic love that meets the impossible grief
and surrounds it with an impossible grace.
Love that grips me around the heart
as if to save me from drowning.
Love that murmurs again and again,
I’ve got you, Sweetheart, I’ve got you.

Nothing could be more ordinary, nothing could be more miraculous, than this breath. Please remember, a breath is never taken, but given. Be grateful. At this very moment, what swirls the galaxy and sings the stars is breathing you. Every cell in your flesh knows this, and softly smiles. The breath w...
