The Official Rules of Co****le (Bean Bag Toss)
1. Equipment
· Boards: Two inclined boards, each with a 6-inch (15 cm) diameter hole. The board is 2 feet (60 cm) wide and 4 feet (120 cm) long. The front of the board is elevated 3-4 inches off the ground, and the back is 12 inches (30 cm) off the ground.
· Bags: Eight fabric bags (bean bags), divided into two sets of four. Each set is a different color. Each bag should be 6 inches by 6 inches and weigh approximately 16 ounces (450 grams).
2. Setup
· Place the two boards on a flat surface, facing each other.
· The distance between the two front edges of the boards should be 27 feet (8.23 meters) for professional play. For casual/recreational play, a distance of 24 feet (7.3 meters) is often used for adults, and can be shorter for children.
· Players pitch from the pitcher's box, which is the area to the left or right of the board, level with its front.
3. Gameplay
· Players: Can be played as singles (1 vs. 1) or doubles (2 vs. 2).
· Singles: Both players pitch from the same board. They throw all four of their bags, then switch to the other end to tally the score and continue play from the opposite board.
· Doubles: In doubles, teammates stand at opposite boards. All four players pitch from their respective sides. After each round (inning), the bags are scored and the next round begins.
4. Pitching
· Players must throw from within the pitcher's box (behind the front of the board).
· In doubles, players at the same board must alternate throws.
· Players must not cross the foul line (the front of the board) while pitching.
· A pitch is considered legal if the bag is released before the player's foot crosses the foul line.
5. Scoring
Points are scored at the end of each inning (after all 8 bags have been thrown). Only one team/player can score per inning.
· 3 points: A bag that goes through the hole (Co****le). This can happen directly, by sliding in, or by being knocked in by another bag.
· 1 point: A bag that lands and remains on the board (Woody). It must not be touching the ground.
· 0 points: A bag that is on the ground or hanging off the board and touching the ground. A bag that is hanging into the hole without falling through is also 0 points (it must fall completely through to score 3).
6. Cancellation Scoring (The Key Rule)
This is the most important rule for scoring. You don't just add your points; you subtract your opponent's points.
· After the inning, the points of both players/teams are calculated separately.
· The player/team with the higher points in that inning subtracts the opponent's points from their own.
· The difference is added to their total game score.
· The player/team with the lower points in that inning scores 0.
Example:
· Player A gets one bag in the hole (3 pts) and two on the board (2 pts). Total = 5 pts.
· Player B gets two bags on the board (2 pts). Total = 2 pts.
· Player A adds the difference to their score: 5 - 2 = 3 points.
· Player B adds 0 points to their score.
7. Winning the Game
· The first player or team to reach or exceed 21 points at the end of an inning wins the game.
· There is no need to win by 2; reaching 21 is enough.
· If both teams exceed 21 in the same inning, the team with the higher score wins. (Example: The score is 20-19. In the final inning, Team A scores 2, Team B scores 1. The new scores would be 22-20. Team A wins).
8. Fouls
A foul results in a bag being removed from play for that inning. It is worth 0 points. Common fouls include:
· Stepping over the foul line while pitching.
· throwing out of turn.
· A player's foot leaving the pitcher's box before the bag is released.
