Aight, heres my penny. Lets speak on Rap...

What is Rap? Rap is a method of telling stories through words in rhyme with music. To be specific, those stories usually have a theme and speak on current social ideas or situations. Technically we've (Black Americans) been rapping for a long time. Slaves were nortourious were singing songs that either spoke of what was to come or what had happened as a way of passing messages along and most importantly, to stay synced up! I'll cut this short.

Now lets speak on WAP.......
I dont have a problem with this song like I didn't have a problem with Unkle Luke saying "pop that p****" or any other of the s*xually oriented raps he put out. Those songs, love them or hate them were the signs of that time. During that time period, Lukes' music, although controversial, was indeed revolutionary due to the fact it opened up the censorship conversation and did an excellent job of pushing the envelope for free speech. But there was an underlining motive to his movement that he either wasnt privy too, or didnt care. During the time 2 Live crew was breaking out, rap was in a very concious period of development. We had the public enemy's, the KRS-1's, the Tribe's, Jungle Bros, the list goes on. Those groups were not a part of rap, they were defining what Rap as a social construct could do to elevate the listener. 2 Live crew were not about elevating the listener, they were just entertainers with a strip show. The machine used that strip show to undermine and redirect what Rap could do.

Lets fast forward to today and our current situation as a country that we are in. The elements of confusion are ripe. With so many factors to take account of - pandemic, civil unrest, failing economy, election year - misdirection is extremely easy to do, especially considering our current mode of mass communication, the internet. Its times such as these were an artform such as Rap has an incredible way of informing and unifying its listeners. This is the perfect environment for elevated Rap to make its way back, its actually needed. The machine is not stupid though, this is the same environment when 2 live Crew was coming out and they were used much like Cardi B and Megan are being used now, to misdirect your energy by using s*x to draw your attention away from a real cause.

I'm not knocking their song, it could have been done better though, but considering both have put out much better music, the timing and popularity of this below average track is suspicious at the very least. To put it bluntly, its not time for this type of music. The machine knows that and is doing something about it. Now that you know, its about time You do something about it. Pay closer attention to what catches your eye. Thats how traps are made.
