I saw them play live in Seattle last month, my first time, and that sealed the deal for me: This band is amazing, great music and beautiful messages of love and standing up for what’s right An all-time top show for me. Yo La Tengo, This Stupid World (2022). Another solid record from a band I’ve loved since high school (late 90s). This record is full of moments that make me think of my longtime assessment that they often sound like a more focused Sonic Youth during longer jams. If you enjoy them, this record will fit comfortably in your collection.

Bill Callahan, Reality (2022). One of my favorite releases of 2022. Preordered from his Bandcamp last year and had the tracks for streaming, but the physical record finally arrived last week! Great record with beautiful artwork. I love his eclectic and strange version of folk-Americana.

Matt Sweeney & Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Superwolves (2021). This fabulous record was waiting under the tree for me. I love this collaboration between these two great artists. Lyrics from Oldham and music by Sweeney. Great melodies and creative fretwork, with cool guitar pedals (like the phaser on “Hall of Death”). I hope we see more installments of this fine pairing in the future (if you like this make sure to listen to their first record, Superwolf).

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Your Funeral… My Trial (1986). This was one of the other great Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds albums I got from that recent visit to the record store. So glad to finally own this dark, weird, and wonderful album.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Live From KCRW (2013). Someone parted ways with a fabulous collection of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds records at yesterday. Thanks to a tip from a friend, I swooped in with my daughter and grabbed three of them. I love this live record from the Push the Sky Away tour. This finds them playing a relaxed and career-ranging mix with a slightly truncated Bad Seeds, but still a force. The amazing tenor guitar solo from on “Mermaids” gets me every time, and “Jack the Ripper” is a powerful finale.

Björk, Fossora (2022). After some delays, including the postal service losing the initial order, this beautiful record has finally arrived! Björk is a true artist, on another level, and I will always explode with joy when she creates new music. Lastly, the Björk shop even threw in a kind gift as a response to the delay ❤️

Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Singer’s Grave A Sea of Tongues (2014). I ordered this record a couple of weeks ago on Bandcamp Friday. So happy to finally own this fabulous record from Bonnie “Prince” Billy and so are my kids who love singing along to “Quail and Dumplings!” You should watch the music video if you haven’t seen it, brilliant! Looking forward to all the future releases from this prolific artist! PS-not streaming, so pick it up on vinyl now!

Will Sheff, Nothing Special (2022). Solid record from the driving force behind Okkervil River. This is a pleasantly mellow record with subtle moments of electric piano and Wurlitzer mixed with fuzzy guitar solos and some big choruses. Lyrics address loss and grieving, reflections on life during Okkervil River, and dealing with addiction. An indie-folk return to the quieter moments of earlier Okkervil records and another indicator that 2022 is shaping up to be a strong year of music. Also has very cool artwork and orange/red marbled vinyl. Thanks to my wife for bringing this one to our collection.

Wilco, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (2001/2022) This became one of my all-time favorite records when I bought it on CD back in winter 2001/2002 and has stayed in that position all these years later. So glad to finally pick up this beautiful record on vinyl for the 2022 remaster.

St. Vincent, Masseduction (2017). Finally came to my senses and picked up this brilliant record. Hitting that sweet spot between electronics and rock. She is a talented musician and force. This has been on heavy rotation this summer.

The Linda Lindas, Growing Up (2022). This record has been a family favorite the last few months, and the physical record finally came in the mail a few days ago! This record has catchy songs, punk attitude, and fights to make this world be a better place. On cool Coke-bottle translucent vinyl, but hard to see in the photo, also fun paper cutouts! Thank you for all you do and thanks for inspiring my children ❤️

Bill Callahan & Bonnie Prince Billy, Blind Date Party (2021). I love weird covers, and this is a collection of weird covers from two of my favorites weirdos. This record was remotely made with an awesome cast of guests on each imaginative cover, including Matt Sweeney, Mick Turner, David Pajo, Cassie Berman, and many more. They cover a range of great artists like Lou Reed, Yusuf Islam, Iggy Pop, John Prine, Silver Jews, even Billie Eillish, and a couple of their own songs. A fun summer soundtrack and a must have if you like these two!
