I was honoured to design these florals for for his Amazon and Apple TV release party. Shawn talks about what it means to be bold and irreplaceable in your industry. He creates anecdotes using examples like Cardi B making his book a very fun read.

Best of all, I had the best and most supportive florist freelancing for me and I couldn’t have asked for a better friend to help me for my first project back from my sabbatical.

On the subject of collaboration, it was an honour and pleasure to work with and on this!

Happy Fall, y’all!

To my fellow florists: Congrats on surviving another wedding season! I’m stoked for you guys to be winding down soon and to have a moment of rest after a bumpin’ Summer.

To my non-florist friends: I’m not into pumpkins but I’ll still come hang and bring my own snacks.

Happy first weekend of Fall to everyone!

If you haven’t been to a local flower farm yet and want to hold onto Summer for a little longer, is having their last U-pick this weekend.

To my fellow gardeners: This is your sign to plant those Fall bulbs if you haven’t already!

Youngoh and Cindy’s wedding is so special to me because it was the last wedding I did before I officially went on sabbatical.

Cindy’s bouquet is one of my personal favorites - filled with garden roses, ranunculas and wispy vines.

Their intimate ceremony and reception was adorned with romantic florals throughout and I felt incredibly lucky to be their florist for their special day. In the brief moment I witnessed guests trickle in, I watched Cindy and Youngoh humbly and graciously welcome them and I saw how loved they were by the people around them too. Best of all, I saw how much they loved each other and how lucky they truly felt to have one another.

Happy belated one year wedding anniversary!

Dear Brides and Grooms,

Did you know that your bouquet is the piece of your floral vision that occupies most of my mind space? Here’s why:

1. Your bouquet is not the main character, you and your dress/suit/tux are! However, your bouquet is your main accessory; like a purse if you will. It should complete your look, not take away from it.

1a. Hot take: Your bouquet should be proportionate to your body size otherwise it’s distracting. Think Nicole Richie carrying an oversized tote bag.

1b. You’re lugging your bouquet around for almost the whole day so consideration of the weight of your bouquet is factored. Your MOH/BM can thank me later when they’ve been holding two bouquets while you hold hands with your betrothed during the ceremony.

2. The flowers I use in your bouquet are going to be special. This is where I really consider your favorite flowers, textures and colours. Most of the magic happens here.

3. The way you hold your bouquet. How does it show best? How does it compliment your dress?

Whether you hold it straight on or a little tilted is preference but I like to provide you with options that best reflect your personality too!

Which orientation do you like best! Straight on or tilted? Let me know below!

As promised, I’m posting some of the work I’ve done!

I’d love to start with my 1:1 workshop with back in May. I had admired Kiki since the beginning of my floral career particularly in the way she arranged flowers with so much purpose and intention.

At the time I took Kiki’s workshop, I was feeling pretty lost and I guess I was also looking for some purpose and intention.

This workshop was really challenging for me as I was stretching my ability to learn Kiki’s process and techniques to arranging.

I’m curious to know - what types of challenges do my fellow florists face when trying out new styles? Do you feel the same level of imposter syndrome that I do?

Dear friends and florists,

My sabbatical is over! The last 1.5 years has been full of shifting focus and priorities. A lot of people asked me why I was taking a sabbatical from Florals. The reasons are pretty simple:

1. I was tired.
2. I wanted to enjoy a Summer.
3. I wanted to revive my creative spirit and become a learner again.
4. I wanted to focus on taking better care of myself.

Do any of you relate to that last piece?

I’m proud to say I’ve done a lot of grieving and growing during my sabbatical as a florist but most importantly as a human!

I’m so excited to share with you all in the coming posts what I’ve been up to and the direction Florals by Anita is taking. In the mean time, I’m taking limited bookings again in 2024!

Floral Fashion Editorial

Heavily inspired by the peaceful and androgynous installation, “The Moss Lady”, at Beacon Hill Park in Victoria, BC, I wanted to break the narrative that flowers and dresses are only for women.

Flowers are beautiful and gender neutral as they’re often both with both female and male organs. But how often have you questioned the s*x of a flower? We simply see them as nature’s decorations of beauty and symbols of life.

I wanted to demonstrate the objective beauty of flowers by adorning them on Matthew. This floral dress shows the harmonious relationship between the feminine and the masculine in a literal way. Most of all, it shows that ALL humans are deserving of beauty and feeling beautiful regardless of race, gender and/or s*xuality.

Thank you to our team who executed our vision so perfectly and to my dear friend, Kevin, for capturing my vision and our values. I’m so proud of us.

2022’s focus was exercising imagination, creativity and collaboration ✨

This meant I wanted to challenge myself to taking the backseat on being the lead florist and freelance for other amazing florists!

Flowering, while amazing and beautiful, can be lonely and labour intensive when it’s just you running your business. I’ve had so many late nights staying up until the wee hours finishing arrangements or bouquets. Freelancing has been such an energizing experience!

I had the absolute pleasure to freelance for Carly of from Calgary to help execute this amazing wedding vision curated by .designs.

I learned so much from Carly and best of all, I made a new friend in the industry! Thanks for letting me create with you and for showing so much kindness and love to people and through your work with the flower babies!

2022 was filled with so much love.

One of my favorite memories was being a grooms-woman and co-florist to one of my childhood best friends, Andrew.

Andrew and I were born on the same day, same month, same year and at the same hospital and we went to every grade school together! Serendipity brought us into each other’s lives. Andrew is like a brother to me and I am so grateful for our friendship!

Even more serendipitous is that this beautiful bride, Mary, has a cousin who is a florist in San Diego. Together, and I collaborated on their wedding and it couldn’t have been more meaningful!

Jenny created Mary’s bouquet while I created Andrew’s boutonniere.

Oh happy day! Here’s another version of the mantle piece I did last month.

Ok, what really happened is I did a poor job of affixing the original mantle piece to the wall and it fell but became this beautiful 2 piecer which I love more.

I guess that’s life!

Happy Summer, everyone!

While I finish up my contracts this year for weddings and other projects, I’ve found a lot of love in keeping ingredients simple.

This bridal bouquet is filled with peonies, quicksand roses, white stock, apricot lisianthus and Italian ruscus and pittosporum for greenery.

I had the absolute honour of creating these jai malas for one of my dear friend’s wedding two weeks ago in Calgary!

Krishty and Vic welcomed me and all their loved ones to a weekend of Bengali Hindu wedding traditions and ceremonies. I couldn’t be more grateful for this love filled weekend and couple!

📷 Thank you to for capturing these beautiful moments!

For those who are wondering how I created my floating floral mantle piece titled, “Spring Cleaning”, check out my time lapse!

I start by affixing bundles of chicken wire to the wall behind my mantle. *Note: I use painters tape here which is not very sturdy at all, but I didn’t want to rip the paint off! If I were doing this at an event or other space, I’d be using nails/3M hooks/duct tape or I’d be using fishing wire to hang it from the ceiling!

Here’s the thing; After I created this piece, it actually fell down because I used painter’s tape to hold it up. When I attempted to put it back up, though, it turned into a totally different mantle piece which I’ll show in my next post!

Hi friends!

This floral mantle piece is the first creative project I’ve made on my sabbatical. I call this piece “Spring Cleaning” because it is comprised of some left over flowers that were ready to expire. When arranging this piece, it was peaceful but felt almost selfish that I was creating something beautiful just for my own enjoyment. If you’ve been looking for a reason to prioritize yourself and your self care, this is your sign ✨.

With pleasure, I share my home with you as you scroll through the photos and I look forward to sharing more creative endeavours with you to use as inspiration for your future gatherings, or simply for your visual pleasure.

I’ll be sharing the process of how I created this piece with you all in the next coming posts!

All my love,

Anita

Hi friends!

As we step into Spring, I have a lot of reflections from the past year and the pandemic I would love to share. A lot of what I have been working on is learning how to rest and enjoying the happiness of having nothing to do. The other part is unlearning the anxiety of not having a jam packed calendar and de-glorifying being “busy”. I have found fulfilment in my life by simply living it and making space to welcome opportunities that truly align with where I am currently at.

With , we are hosting my last workshop before my indefinite sabbatical (link to purchase in my bio), but we are also having a live Q&A today (March 28 at 2 PM MST) to chat about ourselves generally! Join us if you have time and would like to get to know us a little better!

That’s a wrap! The last wedding of the year just before I truly descend into the Christmas spirit!

Julia wanted minimalist greens and whites with succulents as keep sakes. Besides the bouquets, the floral arch is the focal piece of her ceremony and for the reception, she had a custom neon sign with her and Jayden’s name affixed to it!

Congratulations and all my love to the Bearchells!

Nicole is another special client of mine because she is not only a fellow colleague in health care but she is an adult ICU nurse and someone who has been fighting against COVID and for those lives touched by COVID.

Her wedding was postponed and she ended up changing her venue altogether to be at the Dragonfly Inn in Sherwood Park. It was such an honour to do the florals for your wedding, Nicole.

Nicole wanted to have timeless whites and greens for her special day. From the beginning, she has been such a lovely bride to work with and so incredibly kind. Wishing you and Sohbat all my love!

.
When I go through a floral consultation with a bride/couple, I find myself asking a lot of questions about how they envision their ceremony decor.

Why is this such an important focus of the consultation? It can seem obvious that you’d want to have a beautiful ceremony set up, but sometimes putting your vision into reality or even words can be quite challenging.

I find myself giving one piece of advice to all couples when approaching ceremony decor. Imagine you’re in the future, after your wedding, looking at a photo of you getting married; what do you see? How do you envision yourself being framed by the decor at your ceremony? Are you under a floral arch? What shape is it? Are you surrounded by pillars with flowing florals atop them?

Whatever you see in your photo in your head, I find that’s usually what you need. Anything else you see on Pinterest or other photos with other couples might seem nice, but really try to think if you could really fit in that scene.

Words can’t express how excited I was to do the florals for Kathleen and Andrew’s backyard wedding. As I’ve mentioned before, I am a huge lover of the backyard wedding and this floral palette is one that I personally enjoy so much!

Kathleen wanted for her bouquets to be filled with lots of delicate, seasonal blooms that had a natural, hand picked look to them. She also wanted for them to have lots of pops of pastel colours with baby blue being one of them.

Special thanks to my dear friend, Sarah of Our Jonrah Events, for being my assistant on this day! I couldn’t have done it without you!
