(72)

has swiftly become one of the most consistently exciting fests on the planet. Arguably the world’s best-curated program of new and classic Asian cinema, the annual showcase has made itself an increasingly essential institution by introducing American audiences to little-seen masterpieces like Park Hoon-jung’s “New World,” Derek Kwok and Clement Cheng’s “Gallants,” and Li Yu’s “Buddha Mountain” (to

name three random classics from a list of dozens)...But it’s not the quality control or the comprehensiveness that makes NYAFF such an indispensable event, it’s that they deliver both of those things with style..." The New York Asian Film Festival is North America’s leading festival of popular Asian cinema, and one of the top, most anticipated, critically acclaimed events in New York City, and followed by industry insiders. An energy-filled event designed to bring new perspectives, experiences, ways of thinking and seeing that provoke thought, bring wonder, and new visions to our audience. The festival presents the roughest, sharpest, and smoothest of today’s cutting-edge Asian film scene to sold out audiences every summer. “Cross My Heart and Hope to Die” is the winner of the Shorts Competition. Congratulations to director Sam Manacsa and the cast and crew! 🏆

“Cinema is a reflection of the human spirit and the success of a film rests on how a director handles all the unique interactive elements. The film we chose was actually the only film of the 26 that made it on the individual list of all four judges before we met to deliberate. The winner of the Best Short Film goes to "Cross Your Heart and Hope to Die.” - Perry Yung

✨ Special mention to: “White Butterfly” by Catherine Nguyen.

“I’d like to quote Wing Lee, the Production Designer of ‘Three Seasons’: "Good production design helps tell the story and places actors in an environment where they can easily get into character." With that in mind, we believe this award perfectly reflects White Butterfly's exceptional commitment to its stunning environment and remarkable performances.” - Patrick Chen

✨ Special mention to: “The Boys and the Donkey” by Tsering Yangjyab.

“Filmmaking is a collaborative effort and when done masterfully we don’t see it, we feel it. When an ensemble of child actors lead a story with a beautiful backdrop of their culture and landscape, the story becomes an experience. For facilitating and directing this film with such care, our first special mention goes to “The Boys and the Donkey” - Shuhei Kinosh*ta

NYAFF would also like to thank jury member professor Zhang Zhen.
