Hi beautiful people! In honor of Black History month every day I shared a black-owned business that directly or indirectly offered wedding-related services or products. Some I’ve worked with and most I haven’t. They didn’t know until I posted, I sought nothing in return. There were just a few of the businesses I have admired and hear positive feedback. ❤️

My daily posts were dedicated to couples that commissioned me to design their wedding brooms. They chose to jump the broom to pay homage to our ancestors who were not allowed to legally marry during the era of slavery in the United States. During that time the man and woman would hold hands and jump over a regular cleaning broom to symbolize being a married couple.❤️

Back then did all couples jump the broom to symbolize marriage? No. Some enslaved communities didn't jump the broom. But as far as having something of Black American wedding tradition, this appears to be the tradition.  ❤️

I am to understand that for the most part many Black Americans stopped jumping the broom after slavery was abolished because then we could marry legally, so many felt it was no need. But another layer was because the tradition was mocked, and we were made to feel that it was an inferior tradition. We were made to feel ashamed of jumping the broom, like we have been made to feel ashamed about our skin tone, hair texture, etc. In my opinion I see this trickle over into having weddings in general. Every time I turn around there are debates voicing how wasteful weddings are. I tend to disagree. I don’t advocate for overspending and getting into large amounts of debts, however I feel we are worthy of celebrating our love! It’s liberating to celebrate love and joy with loved ones.

Either way since 2009 I have been honored to be a part of thousands of weddings of those who chose to pay homage by jumping the broom at their wedding ceremony. This is one way we continue tradition and cultural awareness. Talk, listen, read, and document. I’m blessed to be a part of it!
