Tomorrow is World Ocean Day!! 🌊🌊🌊 Did you know hot water floats on cold water?!! In the ocean, cold water melting from the Earth's poles sinks to the bottom of the seafloor because it's more dense. As this sinking cold water pushes across the seafloor, it moves water in the depths of the ocean, and drives the entire ocean to circulate! See how cold water sinks and warm water floats, just like in the ocean, with this fun colour-mixing activity in a jar! 👩‍🔬👨‍🔬 ✅ Pour warm water into a clear container, and cold water into another identical container ✅ Add red food colour to the warm water, and blue to the cold ✅ Hold a playing card, or piece of laminating plastic, on the warm water container and flip it over ✅ Put the warm water container on the cold container and slowly remove the plastic divider ✅ The warm water floats, keeping the red and blue colours separate!!! ✅ Now try floating the cold water on the warm. The 'heavy' cold water will sink, causing the colours to mix into purple!

We love exploring at the pond!!! In springtime, we'll go exploring most days, and we discover something fascinating each time! It's my favourite season for this because you can find so many creatures beginning the early stages of their lifecycles. Later in the year when we see the adult forms, it's always fun to remember how they started out!

It may be a new year, but we're still busy rotting our Halloween pumpkin in a jar!🎃 😮 There's a definite 🤢 factor to this experiment, but it's very neat to watch these microbial decomposers at work!! 🦠 We'll keep the decomposing going until pumpkin seeds are revealed, just like how it works in nature. This jar better NEVER break open!!!

Our Story

Calling all Muskoka kids! Bring your natural curiosity and discover the wonders of science at Little Sciensteins. Our Discovery Labs provide fun, hands-on experiments that explore the ‘Why?’ behind the ‘Wow!’

I’m a PhD-trained Microbiologist and Muskoka mom. My love of all things science began at a very early age. The first time I caught a glimpse of microbes swimming under a microscope, I was hooked! The idea of a whole unseen world of microbes existing alongside me completely captivated my imagination. Kids are natural-born scientists. They excel at observing, asking questions, and wondering how things work. My goal is to provide programs that pique their interest and foster imagination. Experiments are designed to encourage creative thinking while participants explore the world around them and access science in a fun and exciting way.

Come and join one of our Discovery Labs geared for kids ages 4-7. Whether building rockets, exploring animal behaviours, creating invisible ink, finding microbes in pond water or turning on lightbulbs with lemons, we’re always up to something new and exciting!
