Shell Tape 98 - Jo Sh - “Soul Flight”
https://bit.ly/3gVCk0S

Number 99. An angel number. A symbol of completion, new beginnings and infinite possibilities. The 99th edition of the Shell Tapes series is delivered by Jo Sh and, much like 'angel number' 99, it carries with it a sense of musical unity. Everything sounds correct on "Soul Flight".

Jo Sh dips and dives between blissy beats and karmic harmonies, pulling at the edges of spiritualised downtempo breakbeat cuts and mind-sojourn acid tracks to weave them together with care and forethought. The threads become one big tapestry, a gradient of musical colour that manifests itself in the form of infinite ambience, new-age Italo permutations, jungle chops with the angry edges sanded off and after-hours mind massages.

Whether it's the 'angel numbers', some gems from WA's underground or the collection of shimmery electronica, Jo Sh's "Soul Journey" is a mix to lock on to and let go with.

Mixed by Jo Sh on land belonging to the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation.

Shell Tape 98 - At Capacity - “Coastal Pimela”
https://bit.ly/3EEGN1I

Local producer and DJ At Capacity glides into the sunset on Shell Tape 98—“Coastal Pimela” is a line tracing mix of house, techno, mid-tempo breakbeat and even a couple of cheeky echoes of electro-clash.

The flower the mix borrows its name from—the Coastal Pimela—grows in sand dunes and rocky heads from Geraldton down to Esperance. It’s a low and dense bright pink shrub that is native to Western Australia’s southwest region and is home to stunning native flora and biological assemblies. Monolithic old-growth forests give way to dense, piquant bushland that borders coastlines and surf breaks so picturesque it’s almost cliche. The land can be stark, cold and unforgiving but running throughout it is a tangible sense of beauty and levity that runs deep through it. You only need to spy patches of the hardy and happy bright pink Pimela to see the proof.

This mix, the 98th Shell Tape, has that same innate sense of wondrous light. It’s overt and easy to pick up on at times; deep groove and bright italo-house grooves dominate the start, giving way to Reese bass rollers drawing from the ‘ardcore continuum and lysergic bush-doof eye wigglers. This pivot towards more pressurised sounds ups the intensity but doesn’t break the mood.

Aerodynamic melodies and vocal cuts freewheel over club cuts as the mix hits its stride; entering ‘peak time’ in our imagined e-cloud chronology. Bass builds, shoulders roll, smiles widen and nestled amongst crags of hard electronica and synthesised sound At Capacity’s Pimela-esque resplendecy never fades.

Mixed by At Capacity on Noongar Country.

Shell Tape 97 - Superflog - "Drill Beats to Study/Relax To"
https://bit.ly/3RnSVYo

In a few years, there might very be an entire generation raised with “lofi hip hop radio - beats to relax/study to” as their de facto lullabies—that’s wild. For Shell Tape 97, prolific Boorloo DJ Super Flog is adding a bit more bass weight to the relaxing academic experience, replacing the anime girl in the green jumper with a shadowy figure in a black tracksuit. Pull up and tune into "Drill Beats to Study/Relax To".

808 salvos, halftime basslines glide across octaves with a menacing sheen and a revolving door of MCs providing an education in hard bars are on the syllabus for Tape 97. We’re provided with a global snapshot of the flourishing drill scene—dipping into sounds from South London, Ghana, pop bootlegs, flips of critically acclaimed TV show themes, videogame OST reworks and more.

Cloaked in evening smoke and, to be honest, far too good to put on in the background and study to, "Drill Beats to Study/Relax To" deliberately winds its way through a weighty hour with low-end leaning rhythms, cyphers guaranteed to hype the club/your study space and impeccable mixing. Soundcloud doesn’t have a dedicated rewind function but we encourage you to try.

𝗗𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗱'𝘀 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 ~ We're elated to be joined by this Naarm-based twosome at Port Beach Brewery on September 18, bringing warmth and joy to the dance floor.

Hailing from Donald Street in Brunswick, James and Peter Isaacs are the brotherly duo Donald’s House. Taking influence from Paradise Garage-styled disco, early 90s house, Italo and anything with a DMX drum kit, their take on dance music is as refreshing as it is familiar.

Much like their productions, their sets are centred around music that has its heart is firmly locked in the 80s—moving dancefloors around Australia and in Europe at the likes of Panorama Bar, Plastic People and PAL, the duo’s sets are just as eclectic.

They duck and weave through drum machine disco, groove-oriented EBM, afro and Italo records, while also paying homage to their peers with more traditional house and techno and we're stoked to welcoming to Walyalup.

Shell Tape 96 - wet puddlss - “all roads lead to a swimmable puddle”
https://bit.ly/3OA2hi7

The ouroboros is a circular symbol that depicts a snake or dragon devouring its own tail. It’s a classic symbol that’s used to represent the eternal cycle of destruction and rebirth. It’s archaic but it looks cool. For Shell Tape 96, Boorloo DJ and artist embraces this idea of never-ending beginnings and ends, transplanting it into a mixtape form and taking inspiration from their namesake (and the joy that can be found in and between them).

Tracing beautifully fragile links between styles, speeds, genres and textures, wet puddlss hops from aqueous plane to aqueous plane. Some are heaving pools, edges buffeted by sub-bass waves at a tremendous pace. Others are shallow, crystalline surfaces glistening with opalescent beauty, all the more beautiful when viewed through the special light illuminating Tape 96.

Kate Bush deep cuts, MGMT’s hit singles, warehouse techno, super-sonic outsider jungle – these things don’t go together on paper. They’re all found in “all roads lead to a swimmable puddle” and although the roads wind they never take any uncomfortable turns. Bonded by a misty golden glow and throwing most DJ mix ‘rulebooks’ out the window, this mix is just really bloody good. Enjoy.

Shell Tape 94 - Ben Taaffee - “Like You”
https://bit.ly/3mAa03G

Our ninety fourth Shell Tape sees the wheels of steel piloted by one Ben Taaffe. The ride should be smooth and breezy, but not without it’s twists and turns so climb aboard the good ship “Like You”.

One take, all wax and pure class–on Tape 94 Taaffe takes us a cloud jumping on a route of his own making, cruising past psychedelicised dream house drifts, puffs of gently pulsing techno tinged with sparkling ambience and oh-so-soulful and sexy vocal tracks.

A shimmery and iridescent sepia patina coats the world we traverse over the course of these two and a half hours, varied sound waves stretching the mix’s sense of place and time as far into the future as you can imagine while timelessly delving into the past. Tempos bend and flex driving forward as breakbeats thunder only to be pulled back into another realm by dream pads and the oft repeated cry of “Like You”.

Despite the transportative ability of tape 94 it’s still a very ‘real’ mix. Records drift in and out of time, deftly maneuvered into primo position by Taafe, our ride steadied and course set. Breeze through the haze, soak up the flashes of brilliance and brightness and stay aboard with joy–it’s Shell Tape 94.

Shell Tape 99 - Alana Joy - “Songs to be sung”2
https://bit.ly/3th2Zsj

In crisp Makuru air, you find yourself wrapped in a warm blanket–one made of loose and intimate karaoke evenings, kitchen twirls, sunset hugs and happy sunrise goodbyes. Uplifting us and cutting through any cold, damp or mororsity is Alana Joy with the undeniably bright Tape 93, “Songs to be sung”.

Laying a decidedly human touch on the controls for her edition, Alana leaps deep into mirrorball halls where disco, funk, house and groove reign supreme. Thumping kick drums have a warm feel to them, constant and organic like a heartbeat. Strings swell and billow over sprawling guitar grooves and lithe bass lines–not to mention passionate vocals dominating throughout.

These are songs to be sung, songs to share, songs to pass to one another through dance and movement and voice. There’s care, fire and community built into all of them and when strung together for Shell Tape 93 a glowing ember of warmness spreads outward from its source–leaving a trail of smiles, shoulder shakes and hip bumps in their wake.

Shell Tape 92 - halalbutch - “Let My Rage Collapse Us Both”2

Unfurling a tapestry of experiential and experimental textures is halalbutch, presenting “Let My Rage Collapse Us Both”, our 92nd Shell Tape.

That tapestry, a challenging, brain tickling, journey through artists’ own experiences, emotions, and imaginations unfurls to reveal a tightly woven block of extraorganic musical oomph, brimming with tripsy textures, mangled moments of acid oscillations and stark and beautiful moments of striking silence and human warmth that play counterpoint to the inorganic world they situate themselves in.

The interplay between instantly absorbable hyperpop moments, spiritually nourishing rhythm and melody and spiky oil-slick post-techno permutations found on Tape 92 is remarkably harmonic - all the recordings that make up this mix gel perfectly even when scatterdash percussion patterns cross over one another or spiritual chants encounter alien synth lines. Chaotic narratives merge into a cacophony that at times moves so fast it seems to stop - layered stories aligning through music and experimentation.

Shell Tape 91 - Hame DJ - “"My Life Is My Art, My Art Is My Life"”"My Life https://bit.ly/3FEBcHa

Bush drums are rumbling, hazy mist is sparkling and art (real life art!) is on the wind. Shell Tape 91 comes from Hame DJ. Cruise up this smoky mountain, spread your wings and tune in to Hame’s acid tinged “My Life Is My Art, My Art Is My Life”.

The vibe for the 91st Tape is a decidedly funky one - rubbery, woozy seesaw sound runs deep through this mix. Chuggy kicks, lysergic synth sequences and dubbed out percussion and vocal fragments that echo off into the infinite are all on the ingredients list for this hour long concoction of downtempo house and techno that melds the organic with the otherworldly.

Stepping out like a slightly sedated but very stylish Flubber on a moonwalk, Hame arcs from modulating pad to modulating pad, tracing melodies that ooze steeze and psychedelia. Throw in a couple of unreleased tracks, some deep cut classics and high vibes and you’ve got Shell Tape 91.

Shell Tape 90 - PTMC - “Moments Before Sunrise”
https://bit.ly/3wjClj8

The minutes prior to a sunrise carry an unmistakable tension to them. The twisty meniscus of night bulges, bends and morphs even more before blooming into a literal sunburst. Who better than to put sounds to this fluid period than one of Boorloo’s original sunrise beach bums, PTMC?

Shell Tape 90 takes the early hours tension and uses to its advantage, filling the figurative pre-dawn air with a blend of soul nourishing and mind melting trance and Detroit techno UK bass all wrapped up in with loose binding of heart pumping pop reworks and stellar PTMC originals.

There are no straight lines between the genres, the mix’s mood alternate at a heliospheric rate, buzzing from peak to peak, tempo changes, beat switches and spinbacks par for the course and welcomed with open arms. The looseness of the early hours and PTMC’s passion as a DJ, dancer and music maker translate perfectly on this recording, enjoy Tape 90!

Shell Tape 89 - Des - “Fold Ya’ Up Like A Blanket”
https://bit.ly/3kAO33r

Launching us towards a star dappled night sky with bass weight propulsion and pure delight delight is Des - serving you and I a cacophony of euphoria in the form of “Fold Ya Up Like A Blanket”, our 89th Shell Tape.

It’s too easy to separate hard from soft in life, organic from inorganic, aggressive from tender. Harsh binaries help no one and sidestep the fact the best things oppose each other on paper; differences dancing dangerously with each other to create something beautiful. Des’ Tape 89 sees this translated to the musical realm with warehouse ready percussion, pace and punchiness colliding head on with a perfectfully honeyed pop sensibilities. Music from artists known for being at the bleeding edge of raw power and experimentation rub shoulders with pop legends to great effect - Giant Swan’s ‘The Rest Of His Voice’ breaking down into Björk is a perfect blissy and bittersweet example.

The combined effect of viscerally gripping club sounds with shimmering and rosy hyper-pop sounds that turn the feel good-ness up to eleven is a puure point of catharsis - it’s like a DMT break through for your emotions. “Fold Ya Up Like A Blanket” does exactly what the title suggests, it grabs you from the dark, swaddles you, spins you around in a dizzy stomp for an hour and then pumps you out the other side, exhilarated, elated, free and smiling. Tune and leave it all behind!

Shell Tape 88 - Proc - “Plot Twist”
https://bit.ly/38xeHI0

Proc keeps us guessing on Shell Tape 88 - duck left, slide right and lock in for “Plot Twist.”

Twists are great - variety is truly the spice of life. Taking us ever so slightly off the beaten path and away from straight-line midweek monotony, Tape 88 deviates from classic acid house to jungle by way of rubber-band prog and echoes of dub techno.

There’s no obvious direction that Proc takes on “Plot Twist” and that’s a good thing. The mix sounds and feels instinctual, fun and flighty - pretension, chin scratching and dogmatic adherence to genre is disregarded while great tracks and personal enjoyment take centrestage. It’s all about the vibe, man.

And that vibe is high! It’s exciting, it morphs and turns, shifting tempo, mood and timbre as a colourful pastiche of killer club sounds emerge. Tune in and enjoy - Proc’s coming at you with a bag of peak time sounds on Tape 88.

Shell Tape 87 - Larry D - “Left-field y Latino”
https://bit.ly/3NX1KXY

Larry D is in the low light spotlight for Shell Tape 87 and this edition is all steam, smoke, bass and bounce. Straight down the line 4x4 techno takes a backseat, leaving room for Latin leaning polyrhythms, Afro influences and wobbly bass lines as we take a left turn for “Left-field y Latino”.

That left turn leads right to a heaving dance floor driven by ear worm vocal loops, South American melodies and the undeniable influence of contemporary Afro-Caribbean stylings, both underground and not so underground. The tunes made in the mix might be made by computers but the beats are anything but robotic, swinging, bouncing and gasping with a spectacular sweaty and off kilter energy.

Images of neon flashes on wet concrete, blurred feet and glistening skin come to mind when consuming Shell Tape 87 - it’s easy to get lost in the rumble tumble world Larry presents to us. “Left-field y Latino” is made for dancers so step out and get stuck in!

Shell Tape 86 - Fabs - “Kiss On The Forehead”
https://bit.ly/3Jl8oEM

The best groove is an easy groove, one you slide into like your favourite armchair. It’s syncopation that syncs up with your inner rhythm, heavy drums that get shoulders bobbing no matter the context, beat changes that make perfect sense. The best groove is like an effortless kiss on the forehead from a loved one as you say hello or goodbye - handily, Fabs is serving exactly that with Shell Tape 86.

Across 64 minutes sunray synth pads undulate on “Kiss On The Forehead’s” mix of breakbeat techno, refined UK bass and smatterings of trancey piston-driven club heaters - the whole time an internalised spirit-metronome safely racing along at steady pace. The mix makes sense. It knows where it’s going. Or Fabs does at least, guiding gently heaving tracks with a steady hand.

Techy four to floor rollers, off-kilter, dubby mind melters and brief moments of bliss and respite all make up Tape 86. Separated they’re freaky, in your face, maybe even aggressive but in this hour long arrangement they make perfect sense. It’s just Fabs’ special “Kiss On The Forehead.”

Shell Tape 85 - Lala - “Rubba Dub Dub”

https://bit.ly/3M8SlvH

Deep, dank and exhilarating, this week’s ride comes via Lala. Shell Tape 85 is one for late nights, single red light bulbs and heads down. Lather up and slide in, it’s “Rubba Dub Dub”.

Dub is indeed the theme of this Tape, with its eternal tendrils echoing throughout the mix, both literally and figuratively. Heavyweight chamber dubstep menacingly morphs into trippy drill club tools, with 808s booming and high hats clattering. Grimey bass, liquid lyrics and sledgehammer steppers all rub shoulders in a decidedly contemporary, genre-less and global take on dub’s endless offshoots.

Sounding like Grand Theft Auto: South London, Lala's Shell Tape contribution covers classic dubstep sounds, boundary-pushing deconstructed club, timeless breaks and mutant bass music. It’s primal, it’s perfect and it’s thrilling, so hold tight and run it up.

Shell Tape 84 - Jamal - “Isko Baashaal”
https://bit.ly/3vbNaVB

The future is now! The future is bassy! The future is bright and big, lithe and light, glistening and gargantuan, and is ushered in Jamal in the form of Shell Tape 84!

“Isko Baashaal” loosely translates to “(go on) have fun” and that directive is what drives this mix. It’s sensual, slimy, sweaty, and slithery, moving from weighty tongue-in-cheek pop flips to muscly ballroom cuts built for a pumped-up version of the apocalypse that is too sexy to exist.

This isn’t to say Jamal’s take on fun is all one note - amongst the bass weighty milieu of Tape 84 we hear musical storylines from Africa, the UK, and America, touching party tropes from early 90s all the way through to 2022 - each one linked to the next by melody, rhythm, contrast, and fingers of euphoria. Big braggadocious party sounds that are nuanced without going full on psilocybe chinstroke? A musical education in the form of hedonism? Just heaps of fu***ng bangers? It’s Shell Tape 84.

Mixed on Whadjuk Noongar Country by Jamal.
