Handmade Tidepool Ornament

I've got a big, multi-part project in the works, but if there's anything I've learned in nearly a decade of sewing, it's that I need to take breaks to work on little projects, too. Sometimes they're practical, like household mending. Sometimes, like this ornament, they're just made to be pretty.

A stitch in time...

As a kid, I loved to dress up.

While I had plenty of princess dresses (mostly prom gowns handed down from relatives or purchased for the dress-up bin for my sister and me), I was just as likely to be dressed up as Laura Ingalls Wilder, or a warrior mouse from Brian Jacques’ Redwall books.

For years, my wonderfully tolerant mother put up with increasingly complex demands for Halloween costumes. From medieval headdresses to witches’ cloaks, she handled just about everything I could throw at her. And then, because she’s a very smart woman, she started teaching me how to sew.

From then on, I was hooked. I started making my own costumes, and then moved on to alterations and more everyday garments. In college, I helped in the theatre’s costume shop, working with all kinds of materials from fragile lace to faux fur.
