Last week we discussed about beginning your DJ journey. So what do you need to start?

DJ gear. What DJ gear? No, not any DJ gear. DJ gear is useless without music.

Music. You start with music. Lots of it.

What music would you like to play? Single genre, multi-genre or open format?

When I began my DJ journey in 1988, vinyl records were what I had back then. I joined a mobile DJ crew and that’s when I started to practice and play to crowds we were hired to play. There were fewer genres back then. But we were expected to play waltz for cotillon de honor, 50’s and 60’s rock for parents (Jive Bunny and the Mastermixers came in very handy) and the pop and dance tracks of the day and new wave. From 1988 to 1990, Technics SL1200 turntables were industry standard (still is today, along with its later variants).

Because of my mobile DJ background, I am inclined to find all sorts of music. Fast forward to today, music is now digital: MP3, WAV, FLAC, AAC are just a few of the formats used for digital music.

Find music from your own physical music collection. If you have compact discs, rip the music to a computer using a CD-ROM and Windows Media Player. You can also subscribe to a DJ music pool and download music to a computer. Others rip off of YouTube but the quality is often unreliable or inconsistent. There are also some independent music producers who post their material online for free. No matter which method you choose, you need music and lots of it.

Also do research on various genres to expand your music knowledge.

Once you have compiled loads of music, then we’ll talk about gear.

Before you begin your journey as a DJ, you need:

Determination to learn.

Without this, you can never get to the next step or level. Many DJ’s are self-taught, watching and learning from other DJ’s, live in person or on YouTube. That’s how determination to learn makes a difference.

You can also choose to pay for DJ courses on various platforms such as Digital DJ Tips, Crossfader and DJ Carlo Atendido. Take note, though, even if you pay, it doesn’t mean you are determined to learn.

This is one point where you can continue on or decide being a DJ isn’t for you.
