Fellow guitarists, we are hosting a open mic event at the wonderful Dana Street Roasting Company in Mountain View, CA this Sunday at 11am-1pm. We welcome players of any levels, and of any musical backgrounds (classical, jazz, fingerstyle etc. ). It will be a great opportunity to make friends outside your own practice room!

Had a partial rehearsal today for those that could make it during the holiday break. The South Bay Guitar Ensemble is ready to perform at the Santa Clara Historic Home Tour on Saturday, December 7th at 1pm-2:30pm. A cool opportunity to see us play in this unique setting!

We hope you can make it to the final in person open mic of the year tonight at Vineland Library on November 26, 7-9 pm. The SBGS ensemble will be performing! Bring your guitar, a friend, enthusiasm, and play a song or two for us. You might even want to perform a holiday song at this outing to get everyone in the mood of the coming season.

Whether you're a seasoned guitarist, intermediate player, or a beginner, this is a fun event. Ken Andrade will be our host and get things started with a couple of songs. Then we each take our turn at the mic and maybe pick up a pointer or two from the host and other guitarists, everything in an encouraging and constructive spirit.

To give a flavor of the variety of compositions and styles on display, at the recent October open mic we heard studies by Augustin Barrios and Leo Brouwer, original compositions (yes, you can do that), pieces by Giuliani, Enrique Granados, the music choice is up to you. The only requirement is the use of finger-style guitar. The atmosphere is welcoming. People of all ages participate, from school children up to retirees, and every performance is met with warm applause. On the sidelines you can pick up tips on new songs or techniques to try.

You are welcome, too, just to come and listen. There’s no charge to listen or to play. We can’t wait to see you there!

SBGS is excited to present our next Virtuoso Concert performer: Alan Mearns! Saturday November 2nd @ 7:30pm.

Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Alan Mearns began musical studies on the classical violin at age five, switching to the guitar at ten. After moving to the U.S. in his late teens, Mearns studied guitar with Douglas James at Appalachian State University under the prestigious Fletcher Scholarship and with Stanley Yates at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn.

Kevin Loh, Guitar Virtuoso in Concert

Hailing from Singapore, Kevin Loh is one of the leading classical guitarists of his generation, captivating audiences worldwide. Kevin’s international acclaim has garnered him multiple invitations from renowned orchestras and international guitar festivals in London, Hong Kong, and Calcutta, among others. He has also performed in some of the world’s most prestigious venues including London’s Wigmore Hall, the Berlin Konzerthaus, and Tokyo’s Suntory Hall.

Kevin has won numerous accolades including 2nd prize at the 2023 Guitar Foundation of America International Concert Artist Competition, one of the most prestigious guitar competitions in the world. He is passionate about giving back to society through music education as well as fundraising for various charities in Singapore and across the region.

A former student at the Yehudi Menuhin School and the University of Cambridge in England, Kevin is now pursuing his postgraduate degree in classical guitar at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with Prof. René Izquierdo.
