As the South Bay Guitar Society is preparing to host 20th Anniversary Jerry Snyder GuitarFest 2025 on March 1&2, here is a panel discussion from GuitarFest 2024.

Panel discussion featuring four accomplished guitarists who share insights into their playing styles, creative processes, and approaches to practice and composition. The conversation touches on various guitar techniques, including alternate tunings, fingerstyle, percussive playing, and harmonics.

Jack Gates discusses incorporating Indian ragas into guitar music and experimenting with different tunings. Teja Gerken and Doug Young talk about their influences, composition techniques, and how tunings shape their sound. Janet Noguera emphasizes composition over technical guitar practice, explaining her efficient approach to writing music that balances playability and artistic vision.

The panelists explore the role of improvisation, the challenge of developing melodies within grooves, and the importance of balancing practice with creativity. They also discuss how different guitar tunings expand musical possibilities, with Janet demonstrating how open tunings allow for unique harmonic and melodic approaches. The session concludes with audience questions and an exchange of ideas among the panelists.

Fellow Bay Area guitarists, we are hosting a open mic event at the wonderful Dana Street Roasting Company in Mountain View, CA this Sunday at 11am-1pm. We welcome players of any levels, and of any musical backgrounds (classical, jazz, fingerstyle etc. ). It will be a great opportunity to make friends outside your own practice room! Josh Friedman will be the host, and will play a few at the beginning and at the end.
