Acoustic guitar virtuoso, vocalist, and composer Pierre Bensusan, nicknamed “Mr. DADGAD,” has taken his unique sound around the globe. Winner of the Independent Music Award for his triple live album "Encore," voted Best World Music Guitarist by Guitar Player Magazine reader’s poll, winner of the Rose d’Or at the Montreux Festival for his debut album, Pierre is recognized as one of the greatest guitar players of the 21st century.

If World Music means the fusion of traditional, contemporary, jazz, classical, and pop music, then Pierre is one of the most eloquent World Music musicians of our time. Initially a pianist and then self-taught on the guitar, the originality of his style makes him one of today’s greatest guitarists and composers for the instrument. Since his first performances in 1974 in France, Pierre has sold half a million albums and given thousands of concerts around the globe, both solo and through numerous collaborations.

Born in French Algeria, Pierre is an adventurer of unusual lands. His almost sacred music is an intimate orchestral hymn, a solo crossing on a multi-shell Lowden guitar in the hands of an adventurous pilgrim.

The South Bay Guitar Society in the San Francisco Bay Area is a non-profit organization that for close to 40 years has been producing classical guitar concerts and spreading guitar music to the community through concerts, master classes, open-mic and events at libraries, hospitals, elder-care facilities, etc. The video below is an example of what we do in the community. In 2023, flood waters destroyed all the musical instruments at Pajaro Middle School. Thanks to the South Bay Guitar Society, the students now have 24 new guitars to replace what was lost. Garvin Thomas has the story.

SBGS is proud to present world renowned guitarist and pillar of the modern guitar world Paul Galbraith LIVE IN CONCERT. For one night only, Mr. Galbraith will awe us with his unique performance style and dominant sonic vibrance in a concert for the ages. It is our honor to present to you this extraordinary musician in our 2023-24 Concert Season!

Renowned as one of the foremost guitarists of our time, Paul Galbraith has a revolutionary approach to guitar playing that has made him an instantly recognizable figure in classical music, but it is ultimately his interpretative breadth that has captivated audiences around the world.

Paul plays a unique 8-string guitar, which he developed in 1993 with luthier David Rubio. On this instrument he has made a series of highly acclaimed albums, most famously a recording of J.S. Bach's complete Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin, which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1998.

Paul developed an individual approach to guitar posture at age 20 following a period of intense investigation into technique. This position developed into the cellist's posture associated with him today.

Paul began concertizing in his late teens after attracting public attention in Britain through a series of televised competition successes. Since then, Paul has performed throughout the world, both as a solo act and accompanied by some of the most prestigious symphony orchestras around.

This is sure to be a magnificent powerhouse of a performance, and we are beyond thrilled to offer this concert as part of our 2023-24 Series!

The SBGS is pleased to announce that KATIE GAVELIN has joined our Board!

Canadian classical guitarist, Katie Gavelin has been a part of the musical world for over 20 years. Beginning as a young child, her love for the instrument quickly grew resulting in her desire to make it her profession from a young age.

Katie has been a featured artist with the Calgary Classical Guitar Society, and given numerous solo and chamber performances in the Southern Alberta area since 2008. These performances have featured works by Britten, Bogdanovic, Hoppstock, Beauvais, and Tarrega. In 2014 she had the honor of premiering The Second Oldest Question by William Beauvais, which was written for her in 2013. She also was a member of the inaugural US Guitar Orchestra in summer 2019 which premiered 3 pieces written for the group and toured with William Kanengiser in a multi-city tour beginning in Carnegie Hall (NYC) and ending in Paris, France.

Katie has had the honor of participating in masterclasses with renowned guitarists such as Roland Dyens, Kazuhito Yamash*ta, Michael Partington, and Manuel Barrueco.

As a teacher Katie believes in creating strong musical fundamentals with her students while exploring various styles of music. She strives to help her students achieve a strong technical understanding of how their instrument works, but also how music is constructed, blending music theory with guitar technique.

In 2012 Katie completed her Bachelor of Music under the instruction of Ralph Maier at the University of Calgary. She continued her studies in 2015 with a Masters of Music, and 2016 with a Professional Studies Diploma from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music under the instruction of Marc Teicholz.

In addition to winning the GFA back in 2004, Goran Krivokapić has earned nearly 20 wins in competitions dating back to when he was only 14 years old.
