Happy Friday everyone, not long now 🎄
I’ve been making compostable wreaths for green burial sites. Willow base which has moss tied on with twine, then bunches tied together with twine and then tied onto the base, swipe to see the stages. The process takes slightly longer than a copper wire base but I love the fact that you can just throw it on the compost when it’s finished with, you can also add small bulbs such as muscari or narcissus tete a tete for spring interest as well.
Have a great weekend.

It’s Peony season 🎉 Unfortunately we still are not cutting our peonies (well maybe one or two) we have to wait three years for them to mature which for me is absolute torture as this year they are stunning and the size of dinner plates ♥️

Day 20 (the final one) - Tell us again who you are and why customers should buy flowers from you.
I’m Vicky of Flora and Daisy and I’ve been flower farming on a small scale for three years from my garden in Peldon, Essex.
I absolutely love everything flowers, trying new seeds, taking cuttings and working which has its challenges but nothing is unsurpassable.
All our flowers are grown without chemicals which also has its challenges, companion planting and certain bugs help us with this though.
Thank you all so much for following and reading our challenge and watch this space for seasonal flowers and workshops this year.
Picture courtesy of my son thank you so much honey for finally getting a picture without my eyes closed.

Day 19 - How will you increase your sustainability this year?
This year we will be extending our homemade compost area, we currently have two bins which were set up a very long time ago, these were made from old pallets and have served their purpose but are now rotting. I do get compost bin envy when I see a great set up so hopefully this year will see the area tidied and more productable so that we don’t have to buy in as much, although really is a fantastic product and Birch Airfield Composting Services make brilliant mulch and it’s locally sourced.
Sunflowers by to brighten a cold, wet day.

Day 18 - Your top tip for those using your flowers this year?
When you first receive your flowers trim the stems at a 45 degree angle and remove any foliage that will be below the water line. Once this has been done place in fresh water and change this every two to three days to keep the flowers looking fresh and increase their longevity, it’s that simple.

Day 17 - When do you hope to be open for the public to see your flowers in 2023?
We are really hoping to be open in April for (fingers crossed and weather permitting)
We’ll also be having a couple of pick your own flowers with a floral demonstration included and cake 😋 Dates to follow.
Flower Farmers Big Weekend is 8th - 10th September this year and we’ll be opening the garden for a sneaky peak of how we grow in a relatively small space.
If you have any suggestions for workshops this year or if there is something you would like to learn please do get in touch.
Really looking forward to a new season and some warmer weather now.
Sorry a bit late posting today but I’ve had the most fabulous day out with Thank you all so much x

Day 15 - The plant that has a special meaning for you?
Rosa ‘timeless purple’ Hybrid Tea Rose was bought for me by my late father-in-law when I first started growing, he was so excited to give me this rose for my 50th birthday that he didn’t even check his sheep first (those of you that knew him will know that nothing kept him from his farm). He had seen me admiring this rose in the Sarah Raven] catalogue during one of our coffee breaks or should I say farm meetings 😬 and decided that this would be the ideal present. It’s a fantastic rose for cutting, has strong stems, the scent is intoxicating and the flowers last really well in water, also it’s the Pantone Colour of the Year 2023 Viva Magenta, so perfect in every way. Thank you Dad xx

Day 14 - What would you like your customers to ask for?
I would love my customers to ask for seasonal flowers. It’s all to easy to purchase imported flowers the whole year.
All our flowers and foliage are grown organically although we are not registered organic and we pride ourselves in supplying scented, seasonal bouquets, hopefully from April onwards (weather permitting).
Echinacea, Echinops, Clary Sage and poppy seed heads looking beautiful in the last August.

Day 13 - Which plant is new to you this season?
I decided to have a go at growing Clarkia amoena ‘memoria’ seeds and pictures courtesy of it was sown in the autumn and is overwintering in the greenhouse. I love the blush pink centres and ruffled petals. These will definitely look beautiful in our bridal bouquets this year.

Day 12 - Top of your list.
After last season and the extreme temperatures top of my list is to have a better watering system as this took up a considerable part of my day, time of which could have been utilised elsewhere.
Top of my list for plants that just keep giving are they flower and flower from July until the first frosts, I just keep cutting and they just keep flowering, what’s not to love.
Although I must admit that my absolute favourite are scented garden roses.

Day 11 - Do you have any specialties?
is my passion and working foam free. It absolutely appalled me just how much floral foam was used when I was at college.
I had to think long and hard about my specialty, so here it is! and naturalistic seasonal designs using the best of
The above was made using ivy vines for the base, gathered from the hedgerow and flowers from our second picture is the mechanics, a compostable bag filled with moss and then tied onto the base with twine.
I believe that anything is achievable without using plastic or floral foam. If you are looking to practice a more sustainable approach to floristry the book ‘A Guide To Floral Mechanics’ by Sarah Diligent and William Mazuch is a valuable resource as is whose tips and demonstrations on Instagram are fabulous.
With regard to growing, just as I think I have mastered something Mother Nature proves me wrong as I’m sure she does to many of you.
I hope that you all had a good weekend and thank you for continuing to read.

Day 10 - Who inspires you?
I am constantly inspired by florists and flower farmers on Instagram and Pinterest throughout the year and have an ever growing list of plants that I would like to add to my cutting garden.
Absolute favourite florist and grower is (picture above) her work with colour and texture is exceptional.
for her stunning Instagram grid and Organic Blooms for their ethos. is fantastic and offers great advice and reels of How to, which for me is invaluable.
Not British but the most amazing cutting field just stunning.
As your probably gathering from this post I’m a little bit obsessed.
Have a great weekend and I’ll be back Monday with Week 3.

Day 9 - How can your customers find you?
It’s been a while since I’ve used this picture and I chose this today as it epitomises at their best, for me anyway.

Day 8. Who/what keeps you company when you’re working? Your favourite wildlife visitor.
I can’t really say that I have a favourite as I get so much joy out of lots of wildlife that visits the garden.
I take great comfort in seeing robins on my cutting patch and the phrase ‘When robins appear, loved ones are near’ always spring to my mind when I see them.
We are lucky to be close to Abberton Reservoir which is run by so we have an array of visitors, to include badgers (although these are fenced off of the cutting patch as they are very destructive) foxes and many types of birds. One of the highlights for me last year was a Hummingbird Hawk Moth feeding on the flowers, plus an array of bugs some welcome and some not.
Thank you for reading my story and I hope you are enjoying hearing a little snippet of how I flower farm.

Day 7 - Who is in your team?
The majority of the time I work by myself with help from my husband doing the heavy stuff. If I have a big event where I need extra help then I call on my friend and fellow member Joann of We’ve know each other since college and are both passionate about and growing our own flowers and foliage.
Oh yes and I nearly forgot we both love tea and cake which is always a plus ♥️
Thank you Joann for being such a great friend 🥰

Day 6. Who do you love to work with?
I love to work with my husband Jon. It’s not always like a box of chocolates but 99.9% of the time we work really well together.
When my late father-in-law was with us we used to call ourselves the three musketeers, this started during covid with all three of us lending a hand when needed.
My father-in-law also used to be my hand model for bouquet pictures which we all used to find hilarious as he had hands like shovels.
Thank you for continuing to read my story.
