On the lead up to Halloween, I will be posting some spooky tales from my face painting adventures! These light-hearted horror stories remind us that not everything goes according to plan in the world of face painting. Here are a few more unforgettable experiences to share!

The Grown-Up Tantrum
At a busy children’s event, we had a long line of eager little faces waiting to be painted all day. I noticed a lady sitting off to the side, watching us work for hours. When the event finally wrapped up, and we started packing away, she approached my artist—who also happens to be my mum—and asked for a face paint.

My mum kindly explained that we had finished for the day and had already had to turn down a number of children, so we definitely couldn’t make an exception for an adult. But instead of understanding, this grown woman threw a full-blown tantrum! She stamped her feet, stuck out her bottom lip, folded her arms, and demanded to be painted.

Now, my mum is one of the kindest people you’ll meet, and rarely stands up for herself, but that day, she wasn’t having it. She calmly but firmly told the woman off, as though she were dealing with an unruly child. It was a sight to behold—and a reminder that sometimes even adults need to be reminded how to behave!

The Last-Minute Request
After a long and tiring day face painting at a busy family fun day, my team and I were finally ready to call it a night. We packed up our kits, tables, chairs, and event tents, loaded everything into the car, and began to drive out of the venue.

Suddenly, I noticed a man sprinting toward us, waving his arms in a complete frenzy. Naturally, I stopped the car, my heart racing, and rolled down the window, fearing something terrible had happened. To my surprise, he breathlessly asked if I had time to face paint just one more child!

I couldn’t help but laugh at the dedication some people have for their face paint. While I love my job, I had to politely decline, assuring him that even face painters need a break!

Paid in Waffle Makers?
I once received an inquiry from a massive grocery chain that left me scratching my head. They wanted me to face paint at one of their events—but here’s the kicker: they offered to pay me in small electrical goods, including waffle makers!

Now, don’t get me wrong; I love a good waffle, but unfortunately, those delicious treats don’t help with my mortgage payments! It was a surreal moment, reminding me that sometimes the universe has a quirky sense of humour.

The Brushless Blunder
In another terrifying twist, I arrived at a gig that was two hours away from home, only to discover I had forgotten my paint brushes and sponges! Panic set in as I realized I had no time to turn back.

I quickly found some baby sponges to cut up and a nearby craft store where I picked up a few brushes. Amazingly, no one seemed to notice my makeshift setup, but as my own worst critic, I could definitely tell the difference! It was a reminder that even in the most unexpected situations, I can adapt and keep the creativity flowing.

The Odd Inquiry
Once, I received an unusual enquiry from a man named Tom who clearly had other… ahem… intentions. He wanted me to paint him while I “spat” on him! This wasn’t an isolated incident, as many local face painters received similar inquiries from him.

To ensure everyone’s safety, I promptly reported him to the police. It’s a reminder that the face painting world can sometimes bring out the strange in people!

The Side-Swipe Scare
After a gig, I was making my way home when the unthinkable happened. A lorry driver side-swiped my car, and before I knew it, I was being bounced along the road sideways! In a panic, he realized something was wrong and stopped suddenly, causing my car to spin out and crash into the central barriers.

I ended up with whiplash, rib injuries, seatbelt marks, and a few scrapes and bruises. Thankfully, I was told I was lucky it wasn’t worse! A kind passer-by even saved my precious face painting kit before I was whisked away in an ambulance. Talk about a wild ride!

The Spider-Man Surprise
While painting a little boy as Spider-Man, things took an unexpected turn. Just as I was finishing up, he suddenly reached out and grabbed both of my b***s! Talk about a shocker!

In that split second, I was caught between laughter and disbelief. After I regained my composure, I gently reminded him that Spider-Man respects personal space. We both shared a good giggle, and I continued painting, grateful for the lighthearted moments that make this job so memorable. The look on his parents faces!

The Sneaky Snackers
At a children's party hosted in a venue accessible to the public, I set up my face painting station, excited to add some sparkle to the kids' faces. However, I soon noticed a couple of adults trying to sneak their children into the private party room to get face painted and grab some of the delicious party food!

Despite the party being meant for a select group, these little ones darted in, eager to get their faces painted and fill their plates. To make matters worse, some children had already managed to trick me, meaning I'd painted children that were not part of the party and needed to rush to finish the guests that I was hired to paint. It was a reminder that kids (and parents!) will do almost anything for a little fun and free treats, even if it means bending the rules!

The Bunny Bandit
At an Easter event, I was happily painting little faces when chaos erupted around the petting zoo area. Suddenly, I spotted a woman making a sneaky move toward one of the adorable bunnies. Before I could even process what was happening, security had to spring into action and chase her down!

Imagine the scene: I’m covered in face paint, trying to keep my cool while a mini heist unfolds just a few feet away. Thankfully, the bunny was rescued, and I got back to painting—albeit with a good laugh and a newfound appreciation for the excitement of holiday events!

The Frigid Face Painting Fiasco
In another chilling adventure, I stepped in to help a fellow face painter who was unable to attend an event. With limited information and a two-and-a-half-hour drive ahead, I was ready for anything—except what awaited me.

Arriving at the venue, I was greeted not by a warm shop but by an outdoor space in the freezing cold. For six long hours, I painted in frigid temperatures with no heating or water supply, while the event organizers cozied up in their warm office. To make matters worse, the fog rolled in for my return trip, turning the motorway into a slow-motion nightmare where the speed limit was reduced to a mere 20 miles per hour! By the time I got home, I was so cold I felt like a Halloween ghost.
