Breaking Up Is Hard To Do the Musical
Breaking Up Is Hard To Do - playing at the Stage Door through August 12th!
Victor/Victoria
May 4 - June 10, 2018: Victor/Victoria is based on the beloved 1982 film of the same name. When refined British soprano Victoria Grant finds herself down on her luck in Paris, she discovers to her dismay that producers and nightclub owners are looking for a sound that is much less “legitimate” than hers.
On the brink of starvation, she is rescued by Toddy, a warm, generous, and flamboyant nightclub singer, who gets a brilliant idea: dress Victoria as a man, and pass her off as a female impersonator, where she will delight the whole of Gay Paree with her eerie gender-bending and astonishing vocal range.
No sooner does Victoria find success in her new role, then she falls in love with King Marchan, a tough Chicago nightclub owner and possible gangster who oozes masculine appeal. King, in turn, is terrified to find himself falling for a man, and refuses to be believe that “Victor” is truly “Victor”.
With hired detectives creeping through her hotel room, King’s showgirl lady friend Norma Cassidy out for some jealous revenge, and King’s sweet bodyguard, Squash Bernstein, revealing his homosexuality to smitten Toddy, Victoria’s life is a whirlwind of complications. Can she really go through life being Victor/Victoria?
Victoria must decide which is more important: a thrilling new career, or a sweet and sudden love. With a jazzy, sophisticated score by Henry Mancini and Frank Wildhorn, and a clever book by Blake Edwards, Victor / Victoria is a wise, warm, and moving story about self-discovery, tolerance, and second chances, as well as a sparkling ode to the city of Paris, and giddy, flamboyant, creative nightlife of the 1930s.
"Victor/Victoria Is Two Times The Fun With Emphasis On Antics" - Michelle F. Solomon
"Stage Door Theatre has proven, once again, they are more than up to the task." - Mindy Leaf
Time Step
That recognizable rhythmic tap combination…the time step, a term that derives from the era of great tap dancers who used their distinctive footwork to set the pace of the music. A mix of European Jig, Reel Steps, Clog and African Rhythms all combined to create an exciting new dance style. This was, some say, the creation of Tap in America as a theatrical art form. Witness the excitement of Tap Dancing at the premiere of Time Step as Kevin Black and Ben Bagby bring this beloved dance style in all it's forms to the stage!
" “Time Step” is entertaining, and the perpetual smiles on the dancers’ faces are matched by the ones coming back at them from the audience. "

NIce Work If You Can Get It
Mar 2 - Apr 15, 2018: Loosen your belts and get ready to belly laugh as the screwball musical comedy “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” the pastiche of a 1920s musical, comes to the Stage Door Theatre! Featuring songs by George and Ira Gershwin, this rowdy, dopey-smart, dance-driven musical never shies from the lavish edge of clunky silliness. Come enjoy a bubble of pure, tickling charm as we poke fun at the Prohibition Era in a clash of bootleggers and socialites with hits like "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off", "Swonderful" and "Fascinating Rhythm.” Set in the 1920s, Nice Work If You Can Get It is the story of charming and wealthy playboy Jimmy Winter, who meets rough female bootlegger Billie Bendix the weekend of his wedding. Jimmy, who has been married three (or is it four?) times before, is preparing to marry Eileen Evergreen, a self-obsessed modern dancer. Thinking Jimmy and Eileen will be out of town, Billie and her gang hide cases of alcohol in the basement of Jimmy’s Long Island mansion. But when Jimmy, his wife-to-be, and her prohibitionist family show up at the mansion for the wedding, Billie and her cohorts pose as servants, causing hijinks galore.
