WATER.

Part one of who knows how many (I haven’t seen the film photos yet and it’s always a bit of a surprise how they turn out).

This past weekend I was able to participate in a couple of shoots conceptualized and created by . These shoots were designed around the 4 elements (earth, water, air, fire) and being that I *love* earth and water in my daily life, seeing that become tangible in a styled wedding photoshoot was incredible.

It’s ME, hi! Sonia V Photography was established officially in 2017, but people are often surprised to hear I’ve been shooting weddings alongside professionals since I was 12. I photographed my first wedding by myself when I was 15.

Swipe through to view my work from my very first wedding as Sonia V Photography in 2017 to this past year. It’s almost strange seeing my work like this. It’s giving me a greater appreciation for my growth.

Some areas I can see my skills have improved the most are:
⚡️ Off-camera flash (and my abilities in bad lighting situations in general)
⚡️ My ability to weave a story through the images
⚡️ My editing skills have improved massively
⚡️ I’ve grown to trust my intuition about when to guide and pose and when to step back and observe
⚡️ Posing wedding parties

And lastly, I’ve learned how to be intentional about my camera settings and lighting choices to *create* images rather than simply *take* them.

P.S. a million thank you’d to my very first clients for trusting me so much and giving me the grace and opportunity I needed to start out in the wedding industry. The real OG’s.

2023 top 9 ⚡️

Thank you immensely to each one of you (yes you!) who has supported this little business of mine this year. You are the reason I don’t have to wake up at 6am to go to a corporate job every day. And believe me when I say that every day I wake up, I am incredibly grateful for that. I really am spoiled to have a job I love so much that allows me so much freedom and fulfillment.

Here’s to another incredible year ✨

Just a friendly PSA. There are a short few hours where you get to have so many of your favourite people in one place. You’re promising to love and support your fiancé for the rest of your lives and then celebrating that with your people. Sometimes it seems like the depth of that gets lost in the production, maybe somewhere buried within the stunning 15 ft floral installation or on the plane ride to Italy, but I sincerely hope it’s not lost in your photos.

Yes, by all means plan for a beautiful day and step out of your reception for 15 minutes to take photos during sunset if you want, but don’t deceive yourself that those photos are more important than actually experiencing those moments with those people.

If you want to skip sunset photos so you can talk to your grandparents before they leave, you’ll never hear me complain. I’ll actually be a little sentimental that your grandparents were able to be at your wedding.

If family photos take longer than we planned because you’re hugging everyone after each photo, I’ll be taking photos of those moments.

*Actually* experiencing and fully enjoying your wedding day is the best thing you can do for your photos.

Laugh, tell jokes, hug tightly, shrug off the annoying advice your aunt gives you, and every once in a while, look at the camera.

10 more from Megan & Nicholas’s wedding day in September. In the emails they sent out to their guests before the wedding, Megan and Nicholas mentioned there would be a live stream of the ceremony for anyone who wouldn’t be able to join in person. So during the ceremony, I pulled up the stream on my phone and took a couple of screenshots to add to their album. It almost felt a bit weird doing it at first. But when I reflect on my job as not just a photographer, but also the one tasked with helping you remember your wedding day comprehensively, it made sense to include those moments from their day.

From our very first conversations, it was really clear that spending time with all their favourite people on their wedding day was a high priority to these two. That means capturing photos of them was high priority for me. Even more so than normal.

My favourite memory of this day is hearing one of the bridesmaids running across the hotel room saying “the ribbons, Kitty, the ribbons” and catching the Pride and Prejudice reference. I don’t get a lot of movie references, so when I do, I get SO proud of myself.
