Organising events and projects around the idea that art has the power to heal, build community, have important and constructive conversations, and shift culture for the better 🌱 Collective 4891 is a group of people with different skills that organises around the idea that art has the power to heal, build community, have important and constructive conversations, and ultimately, shift culture for th

e better. One of our first big projects was a zine project that collected artwork of different mediums themed around community care, which invited over $1100 to be donated towards local organisations that value anti-oppression and specifically, anti-Black racism work. With our recent expansion of the team, we are looking forward to planning events that cover a wider variety of art mediums and themes that resonate with more people.

MEET THE ZINE ARTIST:   🌟

"My name is Charly (they/them/y/iel), i’m a q***r non binary brown artist from Mauritius island who immigrated to Montreal in 2017. I make and create digital art and physical art, as well as film, photography and texts. My art is usually focused on intersectional feminism, anti-capistalism, critiques of the white supremacist and systemically racist society we live in. I adovocate for the equality/justice and rights of the 2SLGBTQIA+ and BIPOC community. I own a small business on instagram where you can find some of my art prints and apparel."

The trailer for Charly’s upcoming film can be found at: https://vimeo.com/765797921

"My work mostly experiments with themes of sexuality and sensuality, the politics of body and gender, and ideas of the self as a private and social being. My work is based around thoughts of identity and belonging and as such, brownness and q***rness play significant roles in my explorations. I strive towards feeling, understanding, and expressing these various intersections to fulfill desires for a deeper intra- and inter-personality."

You'll be able to find amaaya's work "alien here" in In Movement, which is available to order through the link in our bio 🌟

MEET THE ZINE ARTIST: Nadia Mariyan 🌟

"My work examines ecology and place as an active participant of being. Through a multimedia and multidisciplinary approach to artmaking, I aim to reimagine intersections of art, technology, and the natural environment. I wish to blur the lines around what is traditionally constituted as artmaking (as an extension of “study”). I am interested in the complexities of individuation and single-beingness (Fred Moten) and I often refer to collectivity by citing the influences that impact my thought processes and inform my work, for example.

“We are committed to the idea that study is what you do with other people. It’s talking and walking around with other people, working, dancing, suffering, some irreducible convergence of all three, held under the name of speculative practice. . .The point of calling it “study” is to mark that the incessant and irreversible intellectuality of these activities is already present.” - Fred Moten & Stefano Harney""

You'll be able to find Nadia's work "I want the future back" in our zine, In Movement 🌟

MEET THE ZINE ARTIST: 🌟

"I’m from Orillia, Ontario but moved to Montreal to start university in 2018. I’m going into my 5th year at Concordia in the studio arts program with a specialization in painting and drawing. Some of the areas I’m interested in include topics such as : q***rness and representation, art and society, and the concept and construction of time and how we navigate the world. I also work in an art gallery which has been great for pushing me to think about my own art career. "

MEET THE ZINE ARTIST: 🌟

Quang Hai Nguyen is a Vietnamese photographer born and based in Tiohtiá:ke/Mooniyang/ Montreal who explores the notion of home and grief within diasporic communities. Through the contemplation of everyday life and the people that surround them, photography is a tool for introspection, a mirror that reflects the ephemerality and loneliness of our being while also revealing universal feelings. They obtained a college diploma in photography at Cégep du Vieux Montréal and are currently pursuing this degree at Concordia University.

You'll be able to find Hai's work "in these eyes lie an endless ocean" in our zine, which is now available for order! 🌟

MEET THE ZINE ARTIST: 🌟

Kyla Yin James is an illustrator and designer whose work is inspired by mythology, the unconscious, subcultures, speculative fiction, and sociopolitical systems. Their work is filled with symbolism that creates surreal and speculative scenes questioning the status quo. Through their work, Kyla dissects and reassembles how they approach the different thought worlds they grew up in. They describe their practice as thinking and feeling out loud, sorting through the symbols and ideas they’ve encountered.

Don't miss Kyla's work “Passage" in our upcoming zine, In Movement 🌟

MEET THE ZINE ARTIST: 🌟

Dan Yang is a Montreal-based multidisciplinary Chinese Canadian artist who has graduated from Specialization Film Studies and continued her second degree in Studio Art at Concordia University. During her study in Montreal, she has developed great interests in painting, photography, and other media and materials. The pandemic is marked as a turning point of her art practices: isolation, anxiety, as well as the emptiness inside us became one of the themes explored in her paintings. Since the pandemic, she has also started to work on film photography. Dan captures the nuances of everyday life. She locates her photographic practice as one that engages with our sensitivity and subjectivity, as well as the transitions and interactions between our lives and the ultimate environments we live in.

You'll be able to find Dan's work “Between Us, Somewhere" in our zine, In Movement, which will be available for order soon!
