My good friends over are raising funds. They have the opportunity to return land back to tribal ownership while expanding engagement opportunities for the business.

Your support will contribute to 10 acres of adjacent land which will include office space, expanded kitchen and housing for potential employees, interns and volunteers to stay and learn.

Food!!
For most it is just something that is required to sustain life. And this is true. To others, it can be an everyday item used to express wealth, that can unfortunately have negative side effects that go unseen. For me, food has always been more, one such example is cultural education.

My wife and I come from two different cultural backgrounds and upbringings, and with that, more than one type or style of food in our household. This not only means a plethora of great food and flavors, but education of culture through food and practice. And if you know me or have seen my past posts, I always try to have my son involved with food and it's preparation for this reason.

It's not just to teach him how to make food as a life skill, but a great way to have an understanding and respect for food as a whole and for cultural education.
In short: food=education.

So, before I get lost in rambling, with these photos of my family making dumplings, I would like to say Happy Chinese New Years.

Ok, so for the past three years I have had this idea. Just floating in my head waiting for the time to be right. Well, I finally said Fug It and Did It!!

There are others out there already, both in the States and in Canada, haven't seen it yet here in Tokyo, but this one is me!

I created an Indigenous Sunflower Butter Cup with a little something something. No dairy, no processed sugars.

For a first attempt, amazing! Just an adjustment here or there, primarily in assembly. But come the new year, I am going to play some more with this.

The other day I made gnocchi for lunch, using up some leftover mashed potatoes. My little guy wanted to get involved and I love getting him involved!! Between him and I, we made short work of it all.

A Gathering Basket - Issue 12 : Ash

What is your tribal connection to ash? This month we'll be looking at the concepts of communal, lineal, and familial uses of ash and exploring some of the traditional foodways that utilize them.

We'll be learning from the students and teachers of the Dził Ditł'oó School of Empowerment, Action, and Perseverance (DEAP) how to make gad bit'eesh (juniper ash) and looking at two recipes using it; tooshchiin (blue corn mush) and bááh dóó klíízh (blue corn ash bread) from our brother Josh Nez.

Alongside these we'll hear from our friend Sii~xuutesna about the process of making San-chvntuu-'i' (Acorn Soup) in her Tolowa Yurok community and how ash plays a part.

And while we won't give away everything we hope you enjoy this offering and let us know what some of the uses for ash are in your communities!!!
