Chromium is a part of the 6th group and the 4th period in the periodic table of the elements. At room temperature, chromium exists as a silvery metal.
The name chromium came from the Greek word "chroma", which means colour. It was first discovered by Louis-Nicholas Vauquelin, a French pharmacist and chemist in 1797. In addition to Chromium (Cr), he was also the first person to discover Beryllium (Be) by extracting this element from an emerald. Like many chemists of the past, Vauquelin discovered chromium by extracting it from a mineral compound that partially consisted of the element.
