Hattiesburg Parks and Recreation and the Hattiesburg Community Arts Center need your help! We are seeking young artists in the Hattiesburg Area to submit designs to makeover parking meters in Downtown Hattiesburg that need creative upgrades. Designs may be submitted for a single parking meter or a set and are not limited to any art medium, as long as they can withstand outdoor elements. They may be painted, sculpted, yarn bombed, or transformed in any creative way possible!

Blaze the Mic Open Mic and Free Style Cypher is a every 2nd and 4th Friday at LECTURE•Lounge•Arts•Events from 8PM-10PM starting May 10.
BTM is a pre-requisite for the inaugural Blaze the Mic Showcase on Thursday, 08/29 at Thirsty Hippo.

During Blaze the Mic, artists will be able to perform their original music and covers. The event will then shift to the FreeStyle Cypher. During the Freestyle Cypher component of the event, artists will compete one-on-one similar to FreeStyle Friday on 106&Park. Each contestant will have 30 seconds to spit their fire to two tracks. One of the tracks will be an instrumental cover. The other will be an original beat that is submitted.

There will be 3 judges during the FreeStyle Cypher. One of the judges will be a member of the audience. Artists will be judged on originality, flow and relatability.

The first run of Blaze the Mic Open Mic and FreeStyle Cypher will run from May 10 to August 23.

5 Hip Hop artists and 5 R&B artists who have performed at least once at Blaze the Mic Open Mic and Freestyle Cypher from May 10 to August 23 will be invited to participate in the Blaze the Mic Showcase at Thirsty Hippo on Thursday, August 29. Entry fee is $20 for those invited.

Artist will be judged by from 3 judges, one of those being the crowd. The crowd will vote electronically. The hip hop artist and R&B with the most votes from the crowd will receive the crowd’s vote.

A winner will be selected from the Hip Hop and R&B categories. The both winners will receive 4 hours of Studio time. The Hip Hop winner will open for Dear Silas at his show at Thirsty Hippo on Friday, August 30.
