Looking the face of the enemy in the eye. This unwanted greenhouse visitor has developed a taste for orchids. Hot dry conditions has made for very large grasshopper populations this summer. With their hard exterior "shell" contact sprays are not lethal immediately
But a good direct stomp generally does the job.

If you encounter one of these in your landscape beware of it's SNAPPY disposition

If you are having to deal with getting tomatoes off of bending vines or have tomatoes ripening but rotting on the ground try this technique. By balancing the tomato up off a large flat surface you don't risk the rotting on the side contacting the counter, bowl etc. Also increases air circulation and rotates easily. I think it is also a cool display.
P.S. the tomato with the wedge out was ripened and the piece taken out to make you hungry.

It's great weather for dendrobium and cattleya to turn those spikes into long awaited flowers. If you are having difficulty getting these to bloom try brighter filtered to light and giving them a little time outside now in a sheltered area and see what happens.

Happy Earth Day 2021! A great day to spend a little time thinking about air quality. This year instead of just thinking about the air quality OUTSIDE take time to consider the quality of air we breath in our homes, schools, workspaces, cars and favorite restaurants and entertainment venues. Most people think about our outside environment on Earth Day but don't forget about the air quality indoors and what you can do to improve it. According to the Enviromental Protection Agency (EPA) " the average American spends 93% of their life indoors. 87% of their life is indoors, then another 6% of their life in automobiles. That's only 7% of your entire life outdoors. That's only one half of one day per week outdoors. " https://www.epa.gov/report-environment/indoor-air-quality It is estimated the quality of air we breath indoors is 2-5 times worse than what we breathe outdoors. You can begin to breathe better air and reap the health benefits by bringing the world's best air cleaners indoors naturally by enjoying the beauty and fun of incorporating live plants to your indoor spaces. Don't be afraid to suggest to your employer, favorite restaurant or church to think about enhancing their indoor environment with LIVE plants. Do not settle for ARTIFICIAL PLANTS ! Fake, faux are a no go! They do no have health benefits. They aren’t eco-friendly. Many fake plants are created in factories using harmful dyes and synthetic materials that aren’t easily recycled. And once a fake plant is faded, damaged or boring it gets thrown in a trash dump where it will take many years to deteriorate. On the other hand, if a real plant needs to be thrown away because it’s dying, it begins to biodegrade almost instantly.

You are probably a plant lover or at least a plant enthusiast if you are on this page. I wanted to share this very interesting article today. Aside from the enjoyment flowers and plants bring us we can learn a lot from plants, Yes, it does mention the "V" word (as in COVD-19) but I guarantee you will feel better just reading it, so here is the link.https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2020/4/14/21208857/pandemic-plants-evolution-beauty

The white fluffy stuff outside is SNOW, but the white fluffy stuff on your indoor tropical plants is Pseudococcidae longispinus AKA Mealy Bug. Personally, I prefer snow. This time of the year we should all be enjoying the benefits of beautiful interior tropicals plants to get us through the lack of green in our winter landscape. If you have plants then you have likely encountered the "mealy bug". If you encounter this pest feeding on your favorite orchid or other indoor plants do not ignore it or pretend it is just a little lint. (yes, I have actually had people tell me they thought it was lint). It is easily identified with its' long tail and fluffy white coating. If you see it it's a female. Males are much too small to generally be seen. First line of defense is to wash your plants thoroughly using tepid water and a soft tooth brush or cotton swabs. For spot treatment cotton swabs with rubbing alcohol do a respectable job. The females lay approximately 600 eggs at a time. Like I said DO NOT IGNORE this little piece of "lint" on your plants.
Life cycle is approximately 8 weeks. If you have a severe case you will see a waxy excrement (honeydew) or mealybug poo. This can evolve into black sooty mold. 😳 If you are proactive Pseudococcidae longispinus can be controlled and erradicated with a little perseverance on your part. If you need professional help and a housecall call to schedule at 402-991-7836.
