There’s a lovely concert coming up on 22nd September at The Piggery with our friends from Chapel Street Music - one for the diary. (Also Karen’s cakes are really good!)

Looking for a great day out exploring Cornwall’s heritage this September?

Following the huge success of our Awenek! festival last year, our Cornish heritage extravaganza is returning to The Lost Gardens of Heligan on Sunday 8th September from 10am – 5pm.

This one-day festival is packed with an array of hands-on activities, demonstrations, re-enactments and performances showcasing everything that makes Cornwall special.

Cornwall Heritage Trust members enjoy free entry to The Lost Gardens of Heligan on this day and, for those of you who attended last year, you’ll know that it’s an event you won’t want to miss. For those who aren’t our members, there are no charges in addition to the cost of their garden entry and entry as always remains free for Heligan Local Pass and Membership holders.

Book your place today https://www.heligan.com/events/events-at-heligan/awenek-the-great-cornish-heritage-festival/

Deadline approaching!

Following a successful bid to the Rural Prosperity Fund, we are looking for a local supplier to help us source 18 benches to be installed at our historic sites throughout Cornwall. This project will help us to make the sites more accessible by providing rest places at some of our larger landscape properties.

We would like the benches to reflect Cornwall Heritage Trust in their design and to comply with the following requirements:
• Hard-wearing because our sites are often on exposed hilltops and may be affected by salty coastal air
• Easy to install
• Comfortable and easily accessible – heeding the relevant guidelines for disability access
• Materials used should be from sustainable sources and robust – we expect the benches to be in use for at least 15-20 years
• Low maintenance, made of vandal-resistant material and easily cleanable
• To include space for a memorial plaque to be mounted if desired
• Design should incorporate the Cornwall Heritage Trust logo or name in some way
• Large enough to seat three people comfortably

If you can help us please send your tender containing full design specifications, delivery timescales and cost breakdown by email to [email protected] by Monday 5th August 2024.

The benches must be in situ by February 2025 at the latest.

The Rural Prosperity Fund is part of the CIOS Good Growth Fund, which is managed by Cornwall Council and funded by the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

Some stunning photos to inspire on this grey and wet St Swithin’s Day. Is it 40 days of rain before or after, or both? Or we might have 40 days without rain this year maybe, if we’re lucky.

Give this a try in the Priory and admire our ceiling too, although you might want to wrap up warm before you lie down on our floor…

Ready for the concert - if you’re here please leave comments and photos below. (Click the comment button!). Enjoy!

If you are thinking of walking the Cornish Celtic Way, there is a guidebook thoughtfully written and edited by Nigel and Penny Marns. You can also pick up a passport to have stamped as you walk along and stop each day. We have a stamp here at the Priory for your starting point!
Penny and Nigel Marns also organise regular group walks along the Way. There is one today from Looe to Polperro, and and you can sign up to their mailing list and page to find out about there other walks and events.

The Cornish Celtic Way starts at St Germans and follows the old pilgrims route to St Michael’s Mount. Luk Collet & Sebastian Reyda are two walkers and cinematographers from Belgium who walked the Way last year. Since then they have been working on a multimedia exhibition and a series of presentations which will be hosted in Belgium. All the way over in Belgium they are talking about our Cornish Celtic Way! We were delighted to be part of this process and even more excited to share now the first introductory video. We have more and more pilgrims/walkers who follow the Cornish Celtic Way, with many who book and sleep in the Priory overnight.

For the budding archeologists…

Do you know a budding archaeologist? 🔍🤠

The Cornwall National Landscape Monumental Improvement (MI) project, along with heritage professionals and organisations across Cornwall, are working towards relaunching a Young Archaeologists Club!

Drop in on Saturday 20 July, 10am-2pm, here at Kresen Kernow, for a taster event run by the MI project.

Come along and chat to the team about the setting up of a club and how it can be run in a way that covers Cornwall as a whole.

There will be archaeological activities to try and a chance to meet some of the facilitators who are helping make this happen.

Can’t make it to Kresen Kernow? There are two other taster events being held at:

• Maker Heights Visitor Centre, Maker Barracks, Maker, Torpoint, PL10 1LA, on Saturday 13 July, 10am-2pm

• Boden, Manaccan, Helston, TR12 6EN (follow the signs in the lanes from Manaccan village centre), on Saturday 27 July, 10am-2pm

Please note: Children and young people under 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times at these drop-in sessions.

The Cornwall National Landscape, Monumental Improvement (MI) project in partnership with the Council for British Archaeology (CBA) and heritage professionals and organisations right across Cornwall are about to re-launch Cornwall Young Archaeologists’ Club in July as part of The CBA’s Festival of Archaeology 2024.
