So its been a good week (and weekend) since our last event in box 2 but as always a recovery period is needed and I think as this was the last one for this year the recovery required (for me specifically) was much longer this time ;)

Its with much love and thanks out to Club GRETCHEN for enabling us to continue the deviate vision in the beloved box 2. I have to say following on from covid-times, I was at a bit of a loss if deviate could continue in its same event-style format. I’m very happy to say that it did find a way and I hope to continue pushing for and being a Berlin based platform for the underground / experimental and less known bass scene.

Thanks and shout outs to all the artists who performed for deviate this year - you are the reasons I am doing what I do and you continue to inspire and motivate me.

Absolutely!!!! what a vibe Saturday 12 YEARS GRETCHEN + 27 YEARS RECYCLE + HOSPITALITY Berlin was. Thank you to all who came down to show Berlin what proper DnB and bass heavy parties are about. Mad love!😎😍

Recycle #26 has been absolutely amazing! What a year, and it ended with a big bang!
Our birthday parties are always something special and connected with many emotions. The whole Recycle crew had so much fun and one or two tears were shed, of course with joy! Big thanks to Hospitalitydnb for coming out to celebrate with us. London Elektricity, Unglued, B-Complex and Ruthless MC thanks for blessing the crowd with your sets. Also BOX2 was buzzing all night! Bassism Records, deviate and Impulse thank you guys!
And then of course each and everyone of y'all! Thank you, thank you, thank you! :D

But enough of the cheesy talk! Let's welcome the new season! Berlin! We see you at our next event!

Its been a while, but here we are for your weekend kick-off with a new Guestmix up on our soundcloud. Coming from our Finnish friends connection, get to know the artist Eikai. A dark and driving techno mix spliced with eerie atmospherics, pushing into that grey area sound. Enjoy!

Eikai, a Finnish music enthusiast and resident of Helsinki based HARMAA collective has been an active follower of the domestic and international techno and drum and bass scenes since the early 2000’s.

Sooo summer might be fading but the gigs still be rollling ;) all leading up to the final deviate for 2023. Its been an amazing year and I plan to be ending it in total style starting first with a 1.5hr set this weekend of the darkest deadliest 170 vibez - a dreamset and booking tbh! Love to all, and keep doing what you love if nothing but for the love it.

So bit of read incoming, but, its been on my mind to share for some time now and to give a deeper insight into some of the reasons why I started deviate.
So, here are a few things that have been said to me by males over the past 10yrs DJ-ing, either directly or indirectly in conversations:

“Nice set! you can mix ok.. for a girl“
“How did she get that gig.. who did she f@ #% ?“
“Yeh nice set! would of been better if you were topless”
“Hi, I’m a promoter doing this (party name here), looking for female DJs to play, do you want to play?“ (Quota filling)
“Oh you’re getting lots of bookings now coz you’re female“ (That one is a true head-trip to hear)
“There’s no way you can make it in this scene on your own“
“You should do it, and be alone” (flip side of the, can’t do alone statement)
“How do you book female artists? like, there just aren’t that many”
“I thought you were gonna do an all female night with your event, why aren’t you? I don’t get it now“

So to reflect on these and remember how those statements made me feel, I am beyond happy to say that I can finally see the vibe is changing. It has only felt this way for me from this year. This summer I’ve been booked on the most gender balanced lineups to date. Each and every promoter or festival organiser have done it in the way I believe it needs to be done, made it normal, without the giant invisible arrows pointing at our heads saying LOOK FEMALES ARE HERE.

Of course gender balanced bookings require thought, maybe you could say a little more thought. But shouldn’t all lineups have some level of thought to them? Otherwise what is the point? If there is no thought behind a lineup, there is no substance, no respect for the diverse sub-cultures our scene creates, and, there is no chance of development for the future survival of it. So not to ramble on, but I wanted to reflect a bit before the next season of gigs roll-in. This has truly been the best year I’ve ever experienced as a DJ, so much love and thanks to those who have booked me to date, mad respect to all of you. I can’t wait to keep this momentum and vibe rolling! Wish you all a wonderful weekend.

It's with the most heartfelt thanks and love out to these artists from our last deviate event in Club GRETCHENs infamous box 2. To Dennis Leick aka dreadmaul , Tomoyuki Itti Ichikawa aka Itti , Soraya and Aya from MAKOTOs Human Elements crew.

The reason deviate exists is for what you all created and showcased together in that room. Diversity and originality, pushing all boundaries of what is the accepted norm on a so called "club night". I personally was moved beyond words, so thank you all, so so much.

And to the man behind the camera, Masashi Kikuchi from Nippachi Factory - Japan. I will share a full album soon and links to support and follow this truly amazing and creative visual creator. Thank you Masa! your passion and skillz in visual imagery is a true inspiration. Respect my friends. ❤🔥🙏

So for our final guest artist announcement! Let us introduce you to Aya, joining Itti's touring crew to the EU this September. After checking her vibe, mixes and background we knew we had to offer her a chance to play for us in Berlin.

Aya started her DJing around 2010 and has earned a reputation for delicate mixes and a tight song selection. Since 2016, she has been a long-time resident of renowned producer & DJ Makoto’s night, Human Elements. With a rolling, liquid and essence of jazz infused taste in DnB we are very much looking forward to hear what she selects us for deviate.

So to not put this off any longer - after meeting Producer & DJ Tomoyuki Itti Ichikawa aka Itti and his bass loving crew at our first Membrain Festival in 2019, an instant connection and long-lasting alliance formed between us. During the times of corona and live-streams - he performed a live-set for deviate live online from Japan, something that was a first for deviate and allowed us to still be able to bring international and underground vibes to the web-waves, even when none of us could travel or put on any events.

Itti was drawn into the dnb scene in 2011 and has been DJ-ing ever since 2012, heating up the dancefloor for many big artists including dBridge, Dub Phizix, Om Unit, and Skeptical in Japan.

More recently Itti has dedicated his time to creating tracks, honing his production skills to a professional level. In 2014, he contributed to a remix album for Kaizan Records and took 2nd place in the 2016 Outlook DJ Japan Competition. In 2017 Itti had his first major release for Japanese drum & bass label, Subdued records and more recently, in June 2018, he had his debut release for UK based Diffrent Music. In 2019, his EP was released from Ronin Ordinance, Onset Audio, Mask Music and Conspired Within Music. We hear he is creating a specially crafted live-set for this next deviate event, we are honoured and excited to have Itti with us in person this time. Really you don’t want to miss!

Moving on to our next announcement and absolutely humming about this one. Another connection born from our Membrain Festival family we invited Dennis Leick aka dreadmaul , a musician and DJ living in Mainz Germany. His music tell stories about shamanic cults, raw forces and lost myths. His tribal, dark and atmospheric sound has had releases on many prominent labels in the scene.
2019 marked the release of his first appearance on vinyl with Leipzig-based DDNBC followed up with more on re:st, Defrostatica, LOSSLESS and others.

Already an accomplished DJ, dreadmaul turned his attention to a new endeavour in 2023. A project planned and developed for years: a live performance without a computer. Utilizing his modular system, synthesizers, live looping of flutes, frame drums and rattles as well as heavy use of improvisation he transcends the recipes of common drum and bass and delves into a spiritual, almost hypnotic ritual ceremony.

Without further delay its time for you to meet our artists for our next installment of deviate in Box 2 at . Unable to attend our last event due to personal reasons we are happy to invite Soraya to play this time round for us in Berlin.

We first discovered Soraya playing at our favourite Croatian underground bass camp and were instantly drawn into her contagious positivity and energy. In 2014 Hamburg local Soraya was first introduced to Drum’n’Bass, with music always an essential part of her life it did not take long for DnB addiction to set it. She started DJing with her first gig at 'Amens Büttel' in Hamburg in 2016 and from there continues to grow and develop as an artist, enjoying most of all sharing the music she loves with others. Soraya is known for her deep, dark and jungle influenced drum & bass style.

Oooh we are getting close now :) Next on our introductions is none other than Berlin local

Originally from Munich Germany and with deep roots in the scene since the 1990s, the scope across the bass frequencies she can play are at each end of the spectrum and all the way in between. It was early on that she decided to play “Freestyle” and her sets are vibe-bringing, bass heavy, dance-ready sets ranging from anything in House styles to techno, Hip-Hop, Jungle and Electro. In 1997 she moved to the north of Germany and started her first monthly club night called "Club Neu" at Club Tempelhof in Hamburg, pushing the freestyle nights and programme. It was the start of several events she either ran herself or became part of, building the scene and encouraging the idea of diversity within sets and club events.

In 1999 she moved to Berlin and launched “Support Your Local Ghetto", the name of a weekly Radio Show on Twen.FM, a pirate radio station. Heavily invested in promoting and supporting artists from her local hood, the show soon found home as a monthly event in Panke in Wedding.

We’ve heard several sets from BarbNerdy over the years and no one set is the same as the last, always fresh, full of bass, technical skills and positivity that’s hard to not catch and move to. We hope to see you join us early in box 2 to catch her play.

Next of our artists to introduce you to is Berlin-based 5HT2. Andrea works in Berlin as a composer, live performer and electronic music producer. Besides his practice under his real name, he operates as 5HT2 and Gondwana. He’s also known for his work with Koenraad Ecker in Lumisokea. Throughout 2020 and 2021 he started 5HT2, a bass music/early dubstep project which entails studio-based work as well as live performance. Challenging his own experimental/abstract approach to music making, as 5HT2 he composes and performs dancefloor tracks played on-the-fly with hardware instruments, which allows him to maintain their functional nature, while making space for much more flexibility and fluidity. As far as releases under this alias, his debut album was released on Syncopathic Recordings in 2020 and has two forthcoming ep’s on Montreal-based label Monkey Dub Audio.
