So, that's a wrap for 2024. We made Astronaut Dinners with over 700 children and talked to them about the space stations and their operation and key events in space history such as the launching of Sputnik and the signing of the Outer Space Treaty. We hope everyone had fun and learnt some more about space.

I was delighted to have an apprentice Astronaut with me today for my workshops in Lucan Library this morning. We made Astronaut dinners with children from 3 different schools including a neurodivergent class from one of the schools. Everyone, including the teachers, was pleasantly surprised by how tasty the No Soak peas and the Mashed Potato were. They thought the peas would make a tasty snack, comparable to crisps or nuts!

Welcome to our returning scientists, our new scientists and our new followers.
Most of our science clubs have now started for the new academic year. We welcomed all our returning scientists, our new scientists and our new followers. This week we were introducing the children to pipettes, density and layering in preparation for our term of Geology lessons.
We are looking forward to a fun term.

We are pleased to present BEAT THE HEAT : with scientifically proven methods - a free escape room for tourists and locals alike! 

BEAT THE HEAT is organized by the 2024 STEAM Summer School cohort. The STEAM Summer School is an intensive science communication program that uses arts to communicate topics in science. The team has constructed an escape in which participants will solve puzzles that incorporate scientific techniques to stay cool and give insider tips from locals of how they BEAT THE HEAT. 

The event will take place at the Valletta Design Cluster on Saturday, July 20th from 4-7 PM. There will be three heats of escape rooms each starting every hour on the hour. You can reserve a FREE ticket on our eventbrite page. Do not be deterred if tickets on eventbrite are sold out, as walk-ins are very welcome

This week was Space Week so we deviated from our Microbiology lessons to think about space travel. We thought about healthy diets to keep astronauts healthy and the children all became scientists working in the factory supplying food to the ISS. We reconstituted peas and mashed potato and served it with salami. The children evaluated the meal. The general consensus was that the astronauts would enjoy the potato and the salami. More work is required to make the peas delicious

Our Microbiology module continues. Last week we learnt about streaking agar plates. We swabbed the dirtiest places we could find. We streaked our plates and sealed them up before incubating them. Look what grew! Next job is to autoclave them.prior to safe disposal.

This week we are starting another term of fun hands-on online science. Our clubs are suitable for children aged 8 - 12 who love science.
