Trinidad and Tobago suffered one of its biggest heartbreaks on this day, Sunday November 19, 1989, when the senior men's national football team, popularly called the 'Strike Squad', failed in their bid to qualify for the 1990 World Cup in Italy by losing 1-0 to the USA at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port-of-Spain. T&T needed only a draw to qualify in front of an overfilled stadium, while the USA needed to win. A 30th-minute strike by the USA's Paul Caligiuri was the only goal of the game, which caused the USA to qualify for its first World Cup final in 36 years and broke the hearts of hundreds of thousands of T&T supporters. Years later, T&T, after becoming known as the 'Soca Warriors', would qualify for their first (and only) World Cup final on November 16, 2005, after drawing with and then beating Bahrain in a home and away qualifier. T&T's Soca Warriors got some semblance of revenge on October 10, 2017, when they defeated the USA 2-1 at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva, which ensured that the USA did not qualify for the 2018 World Cup final, the first time the USA failed to qualify since that fateful match on November 19, 1989.
