🌟After the many Puanga/Matariki celebrations across the motu, we now understand how important it is to embrace our taiao with seasonal change.

🌟Here is our very first attempt to make a difference with our 'Kono Kai Programme' to support five whanau in Raetihi.

Kia Ora Koutou 🌟

Our team has been busy behind the scenes and is really excited about this kaupapa for our tamariki mokopuna, showcasing their culinary skills.

There are three principal kai during Te Tau o Puanga (the Puanga Period): Kererū – wood pigeon, Piharau – lamprey (blind eel) and Wānanga – kai for the mind.

It is said by elders that Te Tau o Puanga was from the fruiting of the miro tree (as a primary food source for kererū) to the end of the run of the piharau.

The categories:

Nga Manu: Birds

Nga Ika a Water species

Nga kai o te ora—Kai for the mind

We know just how important it is to encourage our local tamariki to get in the kitchen and be creative. Fancy yourself a bit of a creative cook or baker. Then get creative in the kitchen and bring your favourite Puanga-inspired dish along to this event. Be in with a chance to WIN a number of spot prizes.

Across different regions, iwi may acknowledge different stars to signify the Māori New Year. For some regions Matariki marks the new year. For others, Puanga is that star.

While Puanga and Matariki are both associated with the Māori New Year, they are not the same. It’s important to understand that accepting one cluster to mark the new year doesn’t disregard the other, as both Matariki and Puanga are important. Some iwi acknowledge and read both Matariki and Puanga for signs of what lies ahead in the new year.
