All winter many of my Bearded Iris lived in pots to make space in the backyard for construction prep. My Honeycomb hadn’t bloomed yet and I was getting worried! But here she is this morning. A beacon of hope. In all her golden glory.

The bearded Iris are bringing beauty to the front garden today. Loving the moody mauve and the creamy tones. Behind them you can see lavender and daffodils continuing to bloom. Hoping our warm rain brings another round of blooms this week!

I *think* this Bearded Iris is Innocent Star. She is very striking with the bold color contrast and plays well with cream, peach, purple, yellow , AND white Iris. What’s not to love?! She also spread very quickly, so I’ve got a lot of this beauty coming!

Daffodils brighten every day and every room. This is the time of year I have a little jar of blooms tucked in every corner of the house. And the beauty of daffodils is that they are so plentiful that I still have plenty to enjoy in the yard. Do you grow daffodils?

Learning something new keeps us young! My dear friend Amy came to visit and taught me to linocut. We started with a little abstract and then she made a beautiful tree and I carved a little mouse. There is nothing better than sitting in a hotel room with one of your oldest friends doing crafts.

Getting real over here. I didn’t label my corms when I dig my beds on ranunculus last year. I have no idea how many are butterflies and how many are traditional ranunculus. And I’m not sure if they’re planted separately or together. It’s a journey each year to work within our capacity, keep gardening rewarding, and allow ourselves to make mistakes. I’m practicing these things every season and trying to lead myself with compassion. So, this years beds with be a mixed up adventure 😂 and I’m ok with it.

Way back Wednesday! I don’t know if that’s a thing, but today I grabbed a couple photos of my first year growing flowers. I was growing a lot more annuals, selling sweet mason jar bunches, and doing a whole lot of learning. Those early days were some of the most invigorating. If you’re thinking about growing your own blooms, I encourage you to dig in!

Hello. It’s me. Covering beds for our upcoming cold snap.

Each year I refine my process. This year it’s mulch, extra frost fabric over my frost cloth low tunnels, and pavers around the wood raised beds. Last year I wrapped them in silage tarps to reduce some of the wind pressure and capture more heat in the bed. Hoping the pavers work this year to do the same.

Every year I learn something new, try something new, attempt a process that can make things easier for me. Some work and some don’t. But Mother Nature keeping me on my toes is part of the joy for me.

Frosty morning. Got to 28 last night 🥶 Glad my plants were covered! My fall planted annuals can take pretty cold temps, but I like to keep them protected from very cold days. My second round of ranunculus is pre sprouting in my basement and I hope it’ll be ready to go out next week! I’ll give it some short colder times outside before fully planting out. Then it’ll get covered like the fall planted ranunculus. Then hopefully in spring I’ll have a garden full of color!

What have you planted so far? What growing in your garden right now, putting down winter roots so it’s strong for spring?

Top 9 from 2023!

The best thing about this season of recap that happens between Christmas and the New Year is that I get to realize how much I actually did. Maybe you are like me and forget what happened quickly. Maybe you also tend to think you didn’t do enough. Well, I’m grateful for the look back because it catches me in my false thinking. This year’s garden was pretty fruitful and beautiful after all!

With my whole back garden pulled out, it’s difficult to find space for everything I usually grow…So there are pots in every corner of my front yard growing what I can. And I just ordered some more temporary containers to make space for some more ranunculus. I have one early succession in, but I still had so many still to start in storage, I didn’t want them to go to waste. We’ll see how it goes. This is a year of experimenting!

The winter in Tennessee can feel so gloomy. We’re often cold but not cold enough to snow and overcast and it can just feel blah. I found growing things inside through the winter can really help keep the gloom away. I learned about growing mushrooms just last year from a kit and I’m hooked! Every day they look so different and it just feels like magic.

Green Linnet

Linnet Overton is an urban farmer, florist, and designer running Green Linnet’s: Floral, Design & Gardens from her home in East Nashville. She creates cut floral designs, including wearable florals, and home decor items, such as ceramic vases and pajaki.

She's a Licensed Master Social Worker by training and worked in systemic advocacy and nonprofit management for more than a decade. Her passion lays in creating a beautiful, sustainable Nashville through community work and gardening at the intersection of social justice and environmentalism.

Green Linnet’s is the the union of a family legacy of floral design and a modern passion for art, handicraft, and sustainability. Her maternal grandparents owned a small farm and Michael’s Floral Shop in Ohio in the 1950’s. And her favorite childhood memories are playing in the woods and creeks of North Carolina, taking visual art and dance classes, and digging in her grandmother’s garden. Her grandmother, now a spritely 90, has the greenest thumb she knows and a strength that never ceases to amaze.

As soon as Linnet moved to Nashville in 2004, she began dreaming of a home and, more importantly, a garden of her own where she could put down roots. The dream came true in 2009, when she planted her first cut flower garden, just an 8 X 8 raised bed full of zinnias, at her family’s new home. She’s grown cut flowers ever since - sharing blooms every year with neighbors, and volunteering her floral design services for nonprofit events and friends’ weddings.
