I'm going to be at Combe Mill's Environment Day tomorrow, Sunday 16th June. I'll be telling everyone about my party pack business and having a good natter with some of the other exhibitors - The Wildlife Trust, Renewable Energy Hub, Replenish Oxford, and more.

Do bring the family - the Mill will be in steam, there are treats for the dads (it's Fathers' Day after all), a BBQ, and there's a repair cafe too.

I've been invited to have a stall at next Sunday's 'Environment Day' at Combe Mill. There will be so much to see in the Mill itself, stalls to visit and a Repair Cafe too. And, since it's also Fathers' Day, there are special treats for the dads.

On our way back home from France, we stopped off at McDonalds in Calais for some dinner. Imagine my surprise when I saw their reusable tableware! I bet they generate a lot less waste as a result of this investment. Anyone know when it will appear in the UK?

When asked, I do my best to match the party pack to your chosen theme. This month, my blue tableware will be in use at Bluey and Sonic themed celebrations.

In the past, I've sent packs for parties themed around Harry Potter, Ducklington FC, Lego, under the sea, Hey Duggee and many more.

The clocks have changed and we can begin to get excited about the longer daylight hours and evenings spent in the garden with friends and family. This seems like the perfect time to launch my new adult party kits! Perfect for BBQs, al fresco dinner parties - or when you want friends round but don't want to have to do the washing-up! The results are in - and it makes for interesting viewing. If everyone in the UK used the same amount as my household does, that would mean 106,667,600,000 pieces of plastic per year. I don't even know how to say that figure in words 🤯

Our household is taking part in the this week and, at the halfway stage, I'm quite taken aback by how much single use plastic we have used.

Having just prepped this party pack, for a celebration tomorrow, I'm feeling a little better about it all. Party Pack Three, for up to 25 people, means that 60 disposable items have been avoided. Good choice, Emily! Thanks for your business 😀🎉♻

I've just signed up for the Greenpeace/Everyday Plastic 'Big Plastic Count'. This is the first year we've done it and I'll be interested to see how much plastic waste we generate in a week.

Isn't this the most fantastic milk bottle you've ever seen? I think I have a new Eco Hero in this Bates' Dairy hunk! 😍🤣

The address on the front says that it comes from Southport. I wonder how many other households have enjoyed this bottle on its way to West Oxfordshire? And if you're local, maybe he'll be on your doorstep soon.

My party packs tend to stay more local, but it's lovely to think of all the families they have brought joy to just like this bottle.

It definitely isn't 'Blue Monday' here. My pass-the-parcel bags have been washed ready for their next hire at the end of the month. Don't you just love all the colours and patterns?

For those of you who don't know, my lovely mum made them for me during lockdown using a fabric bundle I bought off Facebook Marketplace. The remnants went to another super-seamstress who turned them into face masks.

It's Baby Loss Awareness Week and I'd like to give a shout-out to Hollie at at the JR for her work to support those in the care of the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit. I had cause to visit the EPAU twice on our journey to parenthood and I had such wonderful care from the team there on both occasions. Having CRADLE as one of my chosen charities is my little way of saying thank you.

Food for thought regarding the new ban on single-use plastics.

TODAY a new ban on single-use plastic comes into force in England. It includes…

🚫 Single-use plastic plates, bowls and trays
🚫 Single-use plastic cutlery including knives, forks, spoons, sporks and chopsticks
🚫 Plastic balloon sticks
🚫 Polystyrene cups and containers

This is similar to bans already in place in Scotland, the EU and many other countries and states around the world.

The positive impacts of similar bans have been seen quickly (after the plastic-stemmed cotton bud ban, the numbers found on UK beaches dropped by more than half) so this ban is to be celebrated. However I can’t help feeling that we aren’t taking full advantage of this opportunity to make change.

The ban doesn’t include plastic cups or single-use items made from mixed materials, like paper plates. There are also some exceptions such as plastic trays or bowls used in pre-packaged food, which will undoubtedly lead to confusion.

A BBC report on Friday highlighted that many businesses are unaware of the new ban and wholesalers still have stock of items which are now banned.

And I fear that simply banning plastic isn’t enough to cause the shift we need away from our dependency on single-use.

Single-use plastic-free alternatives cost businesses more money and likely have a higher carbon footprint (it takes more than four times as much energy to manufacture a paper bag than a plastic one). It also doesn’t do anything to tackle our waste crisis.

We need to support more businesses to switch to reusables. Via Upstream, I’ve seen the results of some great pilots in the US to support businesses and universities to make this change. We need to be doing more of this.
