I've found the best part about cosplay is meeting new people who share my passion for costumes and learning new skills to make their dreams a reality.

Ok, let's make a mold! Using all the tips and hacks I've seen on YouTube, I made a frame of Lego, hot glued it to a plastic base, praying it won't leak. I put together my vacuum chamber, only to discover I had enough Platinum Silicon left and I could skip that step. Booyah! Measure, mix, pour, oh crap, I'm short. So much for math! Quickly mix 2 more ounces and top off the large mold. Blast the bubbles with my heat gun. Now to grab lunch and pray to the crafting gods that it sets up. The advantage of this formula is the 24 hour cure time. The other formula (Silicon ATV) can take days longer. Oof. However, you will pay $$ for the convenience.

Thanks to my advisors at Tap Plastics-Lynnwood for all their help.

I've been re-learning Fusion 360 in order to print the gems for Syndra. It's been an adventure in compromise. Not only because the gems are never the same from one picture to the next, but also my current level of skill doesn't meet my vision. I'm bummed but not defeated. Having a Dory moment, if you follow me.

I'm playing with a different finishing technique before making the molds, specifically using a blend of corn starch and UV resin to fill the ridges. Supposedly it's faster(?). Fingers crossed! I also have some new gadgets for de-gassing silicone and compressing the resin as it cures. No more air bubbles!

Just finished applying the gold trim. I'm pretty pleased with how things are progressing. Time to change gears for a couple days and get ready for a convention.

The bodice has a zipper and the woven and spandex layers are stitched together. Oof, my fingers are sore. But I'm not done yet! I still need to attach the peplum and then I can add the gold trim. I think I've finally found a use for the tape patterning method. 😀😎

I did a quick fit test last weekend and not too bad, if I say so myself. That's one worry reduced to more manageable proportions.

All that sweating and fussing about the darkest color and you can hardly see it in the photo. Sheesh.

Ok, b***d bustier foundation is 75% done, spandex outer layer is maybe 60% done. Waiting on steel from WAWAK, and I draped the peplum and refined the fit of the spandex layer today. Still pondering how much I'm going to nail down the layers and if topstitching the seam allowances will be part of the plan. Topstitching feels very sportswear and not very mahou shoujo, y'know?

Here's the spandex toile over the muslin toile. I'm testing my thoughts about a corset foundation under the knit. I like where this is headed but it's buggy as heck. The patterns don't align at the major seams as cleanly as I would like. Stretching the spandex over bra cups is hiding a multitude of fugly problems, so I'm gonna roll with it.

I'm mulling over several ideas, like separate foundation versus integrated, lengthen bodice past the waist for comfort and how that will affect the peplum armor(?). It's a multifaceted problem and at some point I have to stop obsessing over making my b***s look good. Probably won't notice them once I get all the other parts of the costume attached.

I tried the duct tape pattern making method last week. I'm making a b***d bodice with built in bustier and I thought this technique might get me there quickly. It's fast but I didn't learn enough from it. Since then I've draped the pattern in muslin and spandex and learned a ton about how different fabrics might behave. I have an idea to use twill or poplin as my foundation layer but spandex for the fashion fabric. I'm worried the boning will show though. I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Looks like my experiment is heading in the right direction. I'm going with this for my lining. The wide horsehair is giving me the bouncy undulating shape I'm hoping for, though I'm worried about adding 9-18 ounces of decorations to the hem. Well, I won't know until I try and that's a quandary for another day. Moving on to the fashion fabric!

Working on a new project. Having a tough time getting out of my own way. Over thinking the engineering, it's what I do.

Here's my quandary: magical girl skirt with 9 decorations, approx. 2 oz each, spaced around the hemline, which I don't want to droop. So far, I have added a narrow horsehair to the petticoat hem, which is lifting the samples pretty well, but I doubt it will be enough for the finished skirt plus decorations. I want to interline the skirt with a structural layer of organza reinforced with more horsehair (like a couture technique I saw on Pinterest).

So my question is which gore shape yields the prettiest wave pattern?

Side A is a wider diameter circular gore pleated in deep alternating knife pleats.

Side B is a smaller diameter circular gore with narrow box pleats every 4.5" or so.

Mulling over new costume ideas and future competition plans. I've collected the fabrics and patterns for a Regency inspired ensemble, something I've always wanted to make. Thank you, Bridgerton, for the excuse. I don't care to watch the show, but the costume designs are fun and the local costuming opportunities also look like fun.

As for the competition plans, I was all set to make a complicated costume for Worldcon 2025, but I've decided it's a lot of time, effort and money for a one-off. Instead, I'll dial my ambition down a notch and save the other idea for ECCC and Crown Cosplay Championship. I'm a little disappointed. The staging idea I had would have been pretty cool. Still, a little reality check is a good thing.
