Some biographical info about Zephyr! He’s an older falcon at 15, but we hope he’ll be around with Raptor Jawns another several years. ❤️ 🪶 #birdsofinstagram #peregrinefalcon #falconer #falconry #wildlifeeducation #environmentaleducation #philly #philadelphia #raptorjawns
Loving this gorgeous new addition to Raptor Jawns! Zephyr is a tiercel, an old-timey word still used by falconers to refer to male peregrine falcons. 🪶 ❤️ #birdsofinstagram #falconry #falconer #philly #philadelphia #wildlifeeducation #environmentaleducation #tableauvivant #stilllife #lifeimitatingart

Hecate’s been looking ragged these days as she’s fully in the molt! It’s especially noticeable when she drops a log of her head feathers at once, but for a few weeks now she has barely had any tail feathers either! All three birds of Raptor Jawns are currently molting, as they do every year to replace any damaged feathers from the previous year, but it’s frequently most noticeable on our little owl 🦉 🪶 ❤️ #owlsofinstagram #birdsofinstagram #environmentaleducation #wildlifeeducation #philly #Philadelphia
Zephyr taking a drink 🪶 💧 #raptors #peregrinefalcon #birdsofinstagram #philadelphia #philly #environmentaleducation #wildlifeeducation
While being shipped to Philly from Montana, Zephyr was hooded for his own safety, to stay calm throughout the journey. He of course was unable to eat or drink on the journey, and arrived very thirsty! 🪶 💧 #raptors #wildlifeeducation #environmentaleducation #philadelphia #birdsofinstagram #peregrinefalcon
Raptors get most of the water they need to stay hydrated from their food, as many animal bodies (including our own!) hold a lot of water. The pans of water in the aviaries are mainly for bathing - though they do take sips from time to time, too! #philly #raptors #wildlifeeducation #environmentaleducation #redtailedhawk #falconer #falconry
Introducing the latest addition to the Raptor Jawns team - Zephyr, the peregrine falcon!
Saw a wild red tailed hawk and Cooper’s hawk in rapid succession on a walk in the Woodlands recently! Always fascinating how close urban birds let you get - I didn’t even spy the Coops till I was practically underneath her. #redtailedhawk #coopershawk #westphilly #urbanbirding #birdsofinstagram
