Love getting texts like this! It’s one of the fastest ways to get me to respond 😂 this is a stunning juvenile red tailed hawk on a rabbit in central PA. The bright chest, dark belly band, but especially those gorgeous light color eyes indicate it’s a young bird.
That little silhouette up top is a red tailed hawk looking fly above a newer 4ever tag (b***r appears to be MIA - iykyk, Philly). I frequently see red tails perched up high here by 69th street. Always love to see an urban raptor! ***r4ever
Despite the high temps, we had a wonderful time at the Icarus Cup last month! I ended up using the entirety of the spray bottle / portable shower to keep Medea and Hecate misted and cool. They’re both converted soccer fans now!
Had a great time presenting for the PIC campers last month for nature week! Loved the V is for Vulture tile in the classroom, too.

Same owl - very different body language! In the first photo Hecate is looking quite alarmed as a turkey vulture swooped by. In the second photo she’s nice and relaxed in her aviary!
It always startles me to see her like this, but Medea is fine! Every now and then Medea likes to bask in the heat and suns herself on the ground of her aviary.

Hecate’s been looking ragged these days as she’s fully in the molt! It’s especially noticeable when she drops a log of her head feathers at once, but for a few weeks now she has barely had any tail feathers either! While being shipped to Philly from Montana, Zephyr was hooded for his own safety, to stay calm throughout the journey. Raptors get most of the water they need to stay hydrated from their food, as many animal bodies (including our own!) hold a lot of water.
