Made it out hunting with my second year apprentice Valerie and her second season female red tail Walnut yesterday! We tromped around gorgeous woods and fields for two hours but the bunnies and squirrels held tight. Valerie and Walnut have really come together as a team this season, taking their first rabbit on their first hunt of the season last week! Couldn’t be happier for the two of them. 🐇 🐿️ 🦅 ❤️

Part 3 of my path to Raptor Jawns - my 2008 internship at Shaver’s Creek! I handled so many different raptor species this summer, helped out by feeding, cleaning, and assisting with health checks and equipment making. I presented programs to campers and other visitors to the center throughout the summer, and was known by my nature name Windhover. 🪶🦉🦅

Love getting texts like this! It’s one of the fastest ways to get me to respond 😂 this is a stunning juvenile red tailed hawk on a rabbit in central PA. The bright chest, dark belly band, but especially those gorgeous light color eyes indicate it’s a young bird.

That little silhouette up top is a red tailed hawk looking fly above a newer 4ever tag (b***r appears to be MIA - iykyk, Philly). I frequently see red tails perched up high here by 69th street. Always love to see an urban raptor! ***r4ever

Despite the high temps, we had a wonderful time at the Icarus Cup last month! I ended up using the entirety of the spray bottle / portable shower to keep Medea and Hecate misted and cool. They’re both converted soccer fans now!

Hecate’s been looking ragged these days as she’s fully in the molt! It’s especially noticeable when she drops a log of her head feathers at once, but for a few weeks now she has barely had any tail feathers either!
