Four years ago we stood in a queue to see Santa. There was glitz and lights and music playing, it was a proper seasonal affair. But to add to the scene, amongst the little girls dressed in their Christmas dresses and a boy who had pulled on a reindeer onesie, was us, our family who didn't fit the part.

My eldest son and youngest daughter stood in line so excited, jumping up and down, the ability to stand still impossible amongst the anticipation. And then there was my middle son, he couldn't cope with it all. The music rang through his ears, the lights blinded him, and the confusion as to why he was there when watching Peppa Pig in our front room was what he really wanted to do.

The place felt funny, tree sap from the surrounding Christmas trees smelt weird, and the crowds were suffocating him.

He snapped in the only way his body knew how to react and his screams meant the queue stopped thinking of Santa and turned to look at us. My son Rhys was lying on the floor, kicking, screaming, unable to cope.

We were torn between an experience for two of our children, the grotto, the elves and the big fat man himself, and then helping my autistic son feel safe.

So we split up, two going with their Dad for their experience, and me and Rhys watching Peppa Pig in the car.

That's the last time we saw Santa as a family!

A few years on and we realised that we didn't have to follow the norm. We didn't need to do things the same way as everyone else. We could do things our way. So we created our own tradition, and since that day we no longer go to see Santa. And our neighbours have realised that they don't have to do things the conventional way either - they have ditched Santa visits too.

We don't go see Santa, Santa comes to us!

We hosted the second annual Christmas party at our house once again this year. We made sure Rhys had his own space, a quiet room with his Peppa Pig playing, and Santa knew the drill.

He visited the other children first, the ones with their exploding bundles of excitement. My eldest and youngest children were right there in the middle of the bustle, they had joy on their faces and no worries of missing out.

And then it was Rhys' turn. Santa walked quietly into the front room, his "ho ho ho" not too overwhelming or over exciting. Rhys sat with the television remote in his hand and his show on the screen, then he smiled. Rhys smiled a smile that was full of joy but with a keenness to not let anyone know.

Santa checked his nice list, Rhys was on it :-)

Rhys laughed and giggled and even asked for tickles.

It was all done the way we wanted it done. Rhys in his safe space with the chance to see Santa on his terms.

I'll never do it any other way. Santa at ours is the new tradition, and after having 30 people in my house, I think they agree that our way of living is a really good way to do it.

Thanks Santa Experience Wales for making our experience a memory that will never be forgotten.

One of the visits we did today 🎅🏻

This evening has been a day of Christmas celebrations with my amazing family (only half of my nieces and nephews as the others are too old for Santa 🤣) we spent the evening with the amazing Santa Experience Wales. I am so grateful I have met this incredible Santa. He is amazing with the children, so much patience and his knowledge on Santa is mind blowing.

This is the second year I've worked with Santa and I will continue to do so for many years (that's if he doesn't get fed up with me 🤣)

Thank you for all your hard work this year and I hope you have a lovely Christmas Santa.

I have seen there's been lots of messages 20+ I will reply to everyone tomorrow as it's my admin and editing day.
