PLANNING A WEDDING - THINGS TO AVOID

When planning a wedding, there are certain things you may want to avoid to make the planning process smoother and more enjoyable for everyone involved.

Here are a few things to consider:

1. Overcommitting to too many tasks: It's easy to get caught up in all the details of planning a wedding, but it's important to avoid taking on too many tasks at once. Try to prioritize what's most important to you and your partner and delegate tasks to family and friends when possible.

2. Ignoring your budget: Weddings can be expensive, so it's important to have a realistic budget in mind and to stick to it. Avoid overspending on unnecessary items or forgetting to account for important costs, such as catering, photography, and venue rental.

3. Not communicating with your partner: Planning a wedding can be stressful, and it's important to communicate openly with your partner about your thoughts, feelings, and expectations. Make sure to check in regularly and make decisions together to ensure that you're both on the same page.

4. Trying to please everyone: While it's important to consider the needs and wants of your family and friends, it's impossible to make everyone happy. Focus on what's most important to you and your partner, and make decisions that reflect your shared values and vision for the day.

5. Overlooking the small details: While the big picture is important, it's also crucial to pay attention to the small details that can make a big difference in the overall experience for you and your guests. Don't forget to consider things like lighting, music, and decor, and make sure to test everything in advance to ensure that everything runs smoothly on the big day.

6. Comparing your wedding to others: Every couple is unique, and every wedding should be a reflection of your own personal style and taste. Avoid comparing your wedding to others and focus on creating a celebration that is meaningful and authentic to you and your partner.

6. Ignoring your own needs: While it's important to consider the needs of your guests, it's also important to prioritize your own needs and preferences. Don't forget to take breaks and give yourself time to relax and enjoy the process, and make sure to make decisions that reflect your own style and vision.

7. Waiting too long to make decisions: It's important to make decisions in a timely manner to avoid stress and last-minute scrambling. Try to set deadlines for yourself and make decisions as early as possible to avoid any surprises or unexpected changes.

8. Neglecting the guest experience: While your wedding is ultimately about you and your partner, it's also important to consider the experience of your guests. Make sure to provide clear directions and instructions, offer comfortable seating and accommodations, and provide entertainment and activities to keep everyone engaged and having fun.

9. Focusing too much on perfection: While it's natural to want your wedding to be perfect, it's important to remember that perfection is impossible. Embrace the imperfections and surprises that come along with the day, and focus on enjoying the experience with your loved ones. After all, the most important thing is that you and your partner are beginning a new chapter of your lives together!

RECEPTION

“INVEST IN A COORDINATOR! My friends, family and I were so relaxed because we weren’t running around taking care of last-minute details. Our coordinator made sure the day ran smoothly.” – Abby B.

THE CEREMONY

“I wished I had a receiving line to greet all the guests. After the ceremony and after the photographs, I spent what felt like all my time greeting people. When I finally returned to my table, the waiters had mistaken my untouched meal for a lack of hunger. Needless to say, I starved for most of the evening.” – Kelly S.

THE CEREMONY

“Saying your own vows makes the moment so much more intimate and personal, but it might not be for everyone as my fiancé at the time jumbled his words and had the entire chapel in chuckles. Luckily, I can look back and laugh at it now.” – Morgan J.

With the dawn of a new era, all we know about traditional ceremonies can officially be thrown out the window. This is not to say that traditional is not the way to go for your event; all we are saying is that you don’t have to.

In fact, future wedding couples are now reaching for the internet and specifically Pinterest for new and interesting ideas. We go more in-depth on the different types of ceremonies — traditional and non- traditional — in our new book: Your Ultimate Wedding Planner: Different types of ceremonies.

But for now, let’s share what we believe is the most important piece of advice we can give: “You do you.”
We all want to please everyone else and we don’t see fault in that, we simply recommend doing what makes you and your partner happy. You can always add a traditional element or two to please the folks.

INVITATIONS

“I would not have spent so much on our wedding invitations. I visited a friend shortly after the honeymoon and saw my invitation peering at me from her trash can. That’s when I realised that no one keeps them anyway.”
– Tasha K.

Invitations can be expensive and are often a financial regret.
If you want pricy and elaborate invitations, consider that society and wedding-day etiquette are evolving.

We live in a digital era with an abundance of online options. We suggest wedding design websites. We’ve come across a few online options and for the most part, they are free.

Not only are digital invitations environmentally friendly, but they also save money you can use for those things you feel are more important.

USE VENDORS YOU’RE COMFORTABLE WITH

Build a team of people you really vibe well with.

They should have a good sense of your vision and you should be able to trust them to execute it well. Make sure they appreciate your business, so you don’t feel bad when you inevitably should call and ask questions!

CREATE YOUR GUEST LIST

This can be a pretty harrowing process and one that will depend largely on your venue and budget. Sit down with your fiancé and family and create a wish list of guests.

Some brides prefer not to get their family’s input as the entire neighbourhood will suddenly appear on the list. Chances are you’ll need to make some cuts.

You should also decide whether you’re inviting children and who will be allotted a plus-one.

Don’t feel horrified when you start fighting about the guest list. The guest list is one of the most common pre- wedding fights that you will have. Take a deep breath, walk away if you can and let the idea of 250 guest sync in first. Or your fiancé’s aunt that you have never met and now they want to invite her, and she wants to bring her cat.

CHOOSE YOUR WEDDING PARTY

Your bridesmaids and groomsmen are there for emotional and tactical support through your wedding planning process.

Choose friends and family you can trust and who you truly want to stand next to you during this monumental occasion. Be sure you can delegate tasks to them and that they will be will willing to go the extra mile as there might be tasks that you won’t have time to do and they need to be able to step up.

WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE 101

CHOOSE YOUR VENUE

Tip 11:

In wedding lingo, an “off-site” wedding is one where the venue doesn’t have a commercial kitchen and where you need to bring everything in— think places like a park, beach or even an open field.

If you’re planning your own wedding, having an “on-site” wedding somewhere like a hotel, restaurant, resort, etc. will make the planning process much easier.

If you are on a strict budget and a botanical garden sounds perfect, hire a local caterer and tell them what you want. Remember this is your wedding, and this is what you and your fiancé want.

WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE 101

Tip 8:

ADD A PERSONAL TOUCH

With all the wedding traditions that people tell you to have at your wedding, be sure to work in some personal traditions too.

If your family has any wedding traditions that they've done in the past- or if there is something you want to start for future generations, like an ALTERNATIVE GUESTBOOK (a photo frame with instant photos instead of a book where guest writes a note) - Don't be afraid to give your wedding a personal touch.
