English distinguishes two meanings of the word ‘variety’: one a temporally successive ‘variation’ of feelings, moods, rhythms, and the like; the other ‘variegation’, or many separate colours, textures, savours, all experienced distinctly though at the same time within a single artefact. The Latin varietas includes both meanings. From late antiquity through the early modern period in rhetoric, they were conflated to such a degree that variegation of stylistic colours and flavours in artefacts was regularly linked causally to ‘change’ in affect and feeling.
