Barbwire & Roses is a small company that creates handmade leather items. It is operated mostly as a ready-made items shop, with ready to ship stock. The webshop can be found at: barbwireandroses.etsy.com

Bespoke items are also an option, but slots are severly limited for completely custom items. Variations on existing designs are also possible and are generally easier to fit into the work schedule. All items are designed and created within the workshop in Apeldoorn, only for very large orders, an extra pair of hands may be employed, but under close scrutiny, to ensure quality levels. All leather is hand-picked and purchased in smaller quanitites, to ensure a good variation of colour and make certain our items are either unique, or produced in very small quantities, so you won’t find too many people walking around with your item. Besides leatherwork, there is a small of range props, also available through the webhop. Larp safe latex weapons are also offered, as a reseller of several British brands, at select events (see album here in FB for current stock).

Picture says it all! This is an absolute sweetheart who lives a few doors down. He can be super demanding for attention, but also knows that when we are busy loading up the car and van, he needs to wait (which he does).

Thunder and lightning! Custom order reveal! In May Nanami approached me for a custom order request to update their existing character's costume as it was about to undergo a major transformation!
The description was a thunder and lightning style elemantal, a sentient storm that could rage across the larp field, something impressive, with lots of presence.
I don't take a lot of custom orders, but Nanami persuaded me after we had a chat and I had a moment to think about it.
It was a big ask, a complete make over, top to bottom, within the provided budget. I quickly realised that a complete makeover would cost more, so we had a good talk about options and settled on a higher (but maximum) budget and a spread payment plan (always an option). 6 months meant I had time to scout around and build without pressure + there was a lot of creative freedom!
We discussed an added option to expand a little bit, if I managed to find reasonably priced basics for the lower layers of the costume. As I do a lot of events and have good network connections, it allows me to shop around for specialty projects, keep prices down and provide costume pieces that are not my area of expertise (like fabric).
I found the perfect sheep fur that I was looking for with a trader I have known for years and new would have something appropriate.
I was also able to pick up the perfect basic layers to complete a fully new costume through the Mytholon outlet. Thank you Theresa for helping me select, the colours are perfect!
The big leather skirt has a vegetable tanned leather basis made from Tuscan leather provided by Cuoio Pellami and lots of pieces chrome tanned that give a lovely swirl and movement to the costume. It is very heavy, but provides great visuals in action shots.
The big hood is an existing designs, which saves on hours in developing costs. A beautiful Icelandic sheep fur and the leather rim has been embroidered with Heartrender Kefta designs created by Art Embroidery.
Nanami was stoked! As was I! It all came together beautifully when they put it all on forcthe first time. The many layers means there are options for both warm and cold weather wear.

All embroidered shirts that did not yet sell, have been added to my Etsy shop!
Last weekend was rather wet, but still a good weekend. Thank you everyone who was there.
The tent is drying and I have opted for sone lighter jobs like uploading new stock into the online shop. These shirts are perfect for Halloween and some have amazing autumn vibes. There are some cosplay designs in there, but they are also great for larp events or romantic fantasy balls.

Final shop drop before the moots that is happening this werkend! I finished a final batch of embroidered shirts and embroidered tunic.
These are perfect for larp, cosplay, renaissance fairs and book balls. All of them are 100% cotton, which helps with breathability. Each one is unique, though upon request I could do a few custom order ones.
I am loving the skull design and the kefta designs based on the costumes from the tv seties Shadow and Bone.
The tunic was a challenge to embroider properly as it is rather thick fabric and a ready made piece with excess fabric that needed to be kept out of the way. There is a reason I have 14 different embroidery hoops. Also, I did not want to resize the designs in the chest area, because resizing meant losing that lovely textured part of the design. I had to get genuinely creative, but managed it!

This was a difficult and somewhat scary project, but it worked!
I have 14 different embroidery hoops and have used all of them at one point or another, except for the most recent 2 additions, but I am sure that is just a matter of time.
They have different sizes, different locking mechanisms, different effects on the material being hooped. Some projects require very delicate handling and require a more gentle (but still firm enough) type of hoop. This particular project required space due to lots of fabric being in the way and it was a rather thick material!

What I am trying to say is, you need the right tools for the job. This generally means building up an extensive (and often costly) collection. The other things you need are experience, which you can only get by doing (we all started out new at something, at some point) and boldness... dare to try, dare to experiment and dare to fail.
Trust me, even though I have been doing machine embroidery for many years, I am still learning and experimenting to.

It's not easy, there aren't always short cuts, but it definitely is rewarding! Be bold!

Alchemist box shop drop! I picked up this wooden box from an antiques auction. I believe it is Indonesian in origin and crafted a leather carrying rig for it.
As you can see it is quite bulky, but I think it would be perfect for a larp alchemist character and it is still quite comfortable to carry.
The carrying strap can be easily removed from the chest, no alterations were made from this vintage/antique chest.
The price is 200 euro.

Embroidered medieval shirt shop drop! This time with a very appropriate autumn theme.

All shirts are machine embroidered one at a time, here in my workshop. The base shirts are bought in from Mytholon.
They are pretty unique as I only make one of each specific size, colour and design combination.
After the event this weekend, the moots by Vortex Adventures, I will add tge shirts that are left to my Etsy shop.

New shop drop of embroidered shirts! Various sizes, colours and designs, just swipe through the photos for options and prices.
There is only 1 of each shirt. I can take limited custom orders, but I am not taking notes on the exact thread colour combinations that I have already used.
I embroider these shirts myself, by machine and use base 100% cotton shirts produced by Mytholon.
More autumnal shirts will be coming up, but this batch felt a bit more nocturnal, dark academia and darker medieval fantasy style. I hope you like them, do you have a favourite amongst these designs?
