From a family business to a nine-restaurant and catering venture

From its humble beginning as a small neighborhood grocery store to its decade-by-decade establishment as the heart of the community, the original Atria’s continues to inspire new generations.

In 1930, Joe Atria, recently arrived from Italy, established Atria’s in Mt. Lebanon — first as a simple grocery store, then with a barbershop and dry cleaning services added to the premises. With the end of Prohibition in 1933, beer became an Atria’s staple, and the store gradually evolved into a sit-down tavern and restaurant.

By the 1990s, Atria’s was looking for new ownership and entrepreneur Pat McDonnell was ready to take it on. Whereas McDonnell had previously specialized in introducing national chains to the Pittsburgh-area market, McDonnell now wanted to focus on something wholly his own. He bought Atria’s, redesigned it and relaunched it, all while keeping that special neighborhood-hangout vibe intact.

Since that 1997 relaunch, McDonnell’s business, Restaurant Holdings (which also manages Mike Ditka’s restaurants), has turned Atria’s into a nine-restaurant venture.
