Today I honour my ancestors, I honour my Māoritanga, I honour my iwi (tribes) of Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Rangi, Ngāti Tuwharetoa, Ngāti Rangi, Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga me Te Atihaunui-a-Pāpārangi. Sunday morning marked the beginning of Hikoi mo te Tiriti, March for the Treaty. Today I urge all non-Māori to join the march and support your Māori friends and whānau.
For those who follow me that are from other parts of the world, our government in Aotearoa introduced a controversial and damaging Treaty Principles Bill. This divisive Bill is an attempt to nullify our founding document Te Tiriti o Waitangi which protects our rights as Māori to our way of life, our land, our foreshore and seabeds, our waterways, our culture, our language and above all else our right to self determination and tino rangatiratanga absolute sovereignty.
I am so proud to be Māori and I was blessed to grow up learning my language and being surrounded by my culture day in and day out. I want this for our next generation, we want our tamariki (children) to grow up in a society where their culture is celebrated, where their language is celebrated, where they are celebrated.
My karakia go out to all who have begun marching at Rerenga Wairua this morning and those who will be joining. In our language we have this saying, nā to rourou, nā tōku rourou, ka ora ai te iwi – with your basket and my basket the people will thrive.
