Leading like a magician means realizing the true magic lies not in your own shining performance but in nurturing the potential within others. Your role is to disappear like a good magician so the real wonders - the transformed lives and unleashed potential of your team - can take the spotlight.
A key aspect of leading like a magician is realizing your role is to guide employees on their hero's journey, not take center stage yourself. You empower others to become the heroes of their own stories.

The magician archetype comes from ancient myths, tales, and traditions across cultures. Shamans, wizards, and mentors like Gandalf and Merlin represent figures who could transform lives through wisdom, guidance and magic. As leaders, we can learn from these archetypes.
Shamans in indigenous traditions used ritual, herbs and drumming to enter non-ordinary states of consciousness from which they could offer wisdom and healing. Wizards in Western folklore like Gandalf and Merlin used magic to guide kings and transform communities through wisdom and insight.

Walking Between Worlds
Magicians have long been seen as figures who walk between different realms and worlds. They navigate the borders of the spiritual and physical, the seen and unseen.
Leaders, too, are those who walk between different worlds. A good leader must navigate the spaces between employees, clients, executives and different company departments. They bridge divides, translate between perspectives and find common ground. They operate at the junction of different systems, interests and agendas.

Without this commitment to mastery, new leaders will continue wielding their "magical powers" ineffectively.
But through training, feedback, effort and humility, we can evolve from chaotic sorcerers' apprentices into true masters who competently guide our teams onward and upward.
Every stumble provides a lesson, every mistake reveals an opportunity to improve. Our duty is to develop our powers until we can properly empower others.

In stories like The Sorcerer's Apprentice, new magicians are given powers and responsibilities before they have truly mastered their craft. The consequences are often disastrous.
New leaders face a similar predicament. They are promoted into leadership roles before fully developing the skills required to succeed. Without training, many leaders fall back on ineffective habits and directives.
Like the apprentice, new leaders must commit to ongoing training, feedback and practice to avoid chaos.

Stop being the HERO.
In myths and stories, the magician or wise mentor often plays the role of the guide, not the hero. They point the way but do not take the journey themselves.
Leaders, too, are meant to be guides rather than heroes. Your role is to empower employees to become the heroes of their own stories - to achieve their goals, grow their skills and advance their careers. You guide them on their hero's journey, but you do not take center stage yourself.

The No. 1 Complaint in Business!#communication #leadership
π§ββοΈTHIS! Phillip Washingtonβs take away from our discussion about Leading Like A Magician on his Wealth Building Made Simple podcast! #leadershipdevelopment #leadershiptraining #leadership
The constant state of communication we're in via messages, social media, email, etc. has upended how information is shared within organizations. I recently drew the comparison:"It used to be in the old days you would send a memo and send it out with paper...But now with pings it becomes these little 'hobbit holes' of messages. [Business] communication has the same value as a text from your daughter or a Domino's delivered pizza notification."This "chaos of constant communication" makes it difficult for humans to focus and be successful. We must now "take back the attention that's been taken from [us]" and learn to filter out the noise. So how do we reclaim our attention in this age of overload?- Prioritize the communications that require decisions and action.- Minimize distractions from notifications with less value.- Set clearer policies within our organizations and teams about what really matters. The answer begins with reassessing what truly deserves our focus - and filtering out the "noise" competing for our limited attention. With discipline and insight, we can restore value and meaning to our communications once again. The key is reclaiming the power over our own attention. Are you ready to take back what rightfully belongs to you - and regain your focus to be more productive and effective?
