The Boardroom Surfboard Show The Boardroom Surfboard Show highlights the surfboard manufacturing industry. The only thing that mattered. It was all about the ride--what you wore came second.

MISSION & PHILOSOPHY – THE BOARDROOM

IN THE BEGINNING IT WAS ALL ABOUT THE SURFBOARD. From ancient Polynesia to the ASP World Tour; from Waikiki to Maverick’s; from The Endless Summer to Surfline; as the eras passed what we’ve worn or said or listened to or traveled to or read or watched are just sidebars on surfing’s timeline. Because the history of our sport is the history of the surfboard. Not

hing has defined the surfing experience more than that on which we ride the waves. Nothing defines the surfer more than his (or her) surfboard. So much more than a tool, the surfboard is the philosophical icon, a sacred craft, a culturally pervasive symbol of freedom, adventure and enduring youth. This is why the surfboard builder was once the primary arbiter of surfing culture, from those early Hawaiian kahunas to the first wave of board manufactures in the early 1960s. Think back: Hobie, Hansen, Bing, Weber, Noll, Jacobs, Haut, et al. These labels --the surfboards they produced and the way this product was marketed--shaped surf culture, both literally and figuratively. Yet as the decade passed, the emphasis shifted away from the surfboard. The surf magazines became the main cultural hub, establishing ethical and aesthetic boundaries and ultimately marginalizing the role of the surfboard in their increasingly narrow portrayal of the sport. According to the surf mags throughout much of the 1980s and ‘90s there was only one way to surf: a mono-board culture. At the same time the burgeoning surf wear industry began to eclipse all other commercial elements of the sport. Riding a swell of endorsement –based marketing, these soft good companies became our cultural leaders, creating the imagery and feeding it to a media who, in turn, fed this pre-digested vision back to us: a mirror with no backing, that only reflected outward. This is not to say there’s been any sort of deliberate attempt to commoditize our passion; the surf media and soft goods manufacturers are not evil, they’re just off track. It is all about the board; has always been about the board. THE BOARDROOM feels it is time to reassert and maintain that philosophy. To put the surfboard--and the modern day kahunas who craft and design them—back at the forefront of surf culture. At THE BOARDROOM we place surf culture, its influence, its importance, its responsibility, back in the hands of the artisans who shape our sacred craft- and ultimately our future. Please join us as we showcase surfboards, essential surf equipment and gear. Because really surfers only care about two things: 1) waves and 2) the equipment to ride them with.

Telos:

pic 1- winner of the 2nd Annual Surfing Village Open. At the end of 18 there were two tied at the top . and went an additional 9 hole playoff. Which was all square after 9, so a sudden death closest to the pin final hole was required w Theo punching a low pw through the trees within 8’ for the W.
#2 - Hank mid-travel grind Skytrain Jakarta. Such a blessing that we did this father/son trip again. Grateful that he put up with his old man’s moments. “Get off my lawn.”
#3 - Four feet and building on arrival. Surfed without a crowd for 11 days straight. Two solid swells pushed through the Indian Ocean and that thins the herd considerably. The wave count was through the roof.
#4 - reef booties tucked snuggly in back of . It’s of course shallow, and one of those waves that’s gets shallower the further along you go.
# 5 Bruno with the Fish Eye for the score. The crew at SV is welcoming, warm, and understands the market of mostly 30-50 yr olds such as myself with bigger hopes than ability. i.e. I used my fair share of camp Betadine- and Advil.

The food has been incredible.

Rosanna’s kitchen is again providing delicious breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The accommodations sit right on top of a right hand reef with three specific and separate spots on the reef. All three provide deep tubes.the beds are large, plush and lightly outfitted with soft sheet and pillows… and overhanging bug net with fan. Incredible evening lightning shows. The song of birds and ocean is rhythmic and calming.

But we come here, at least I do, to get a few tubes. Luckily this old man body ( with the help of Tylenol and Advil) occasionally finds a few — and invariably blows a few too. 🤔🤪

Bruno, manning the fish eye, captured this moment.

BTW- I’ve been surfing ALONE, for the most part. Perhaps two or three friends on occasion, with inspiring us all with his performances.

This particular wave is at spot 2.

There are many places to surf in Indonesia. It’s a wave field. is just one of them. It’s the one I chose.

I love this board. Such a great design. Frankly, under the radar. Wayno needs to market this model. Here we are in Japan 🇯🇵, 5 years ago. That’s Tim with our Japanese host. I’m frothing on that outline and special sauce transom…thins out the wide tail for bite. I’ve owned four of them. One is stashed in Mainland Mex. Most underrated surfboard ever? Me thinks yes.

Tuesday Time Machine

Our 1st iteration of the surfboard show in 2007 we honored The Michelangelo of Shaping— Michael Diffenderfer.

So much more than a tool, the surfboard is the philosophical icon, a sacred craft, a culturally pervasive symbol of freedom, adventure and enduring youth. This is why the surfboard builder was once the primary arbiter of surfing culture, from those early Hawaiian kahunas to the first wave of board manufactures. Think back: Hobie, Hansen, Bing, Weber, Larkin, Noll, Jacobs, Haut, et al. These surfboard builders shaped surf culture, both literally and figuratively. It was all about the ride–what you wore came second. Since 2007 THE BOARDROOM SHOW has reasserted and maintained this philosophy. To put the surfboard — and the modern day kahunas who craft and design them — back at the forefront of surf culture. Today the international surfboard building community places surf culture, its influence, its importance, its responsibility, back in the hands of the artisans who shape our sacred craft – and ultimately our future. Please join us as we showcase builders, designers, craftsman, surfboards, essential surf equipment, gear, art, music & more.

In 2024 we honor Bob McTavish. Booth space is now available.

Tim Crozier…many of you have heard about what happened to Tim while surfing. Broken Femur! The gnarliest of all breaks.

I don’t think I can imagine the pain, but Tim is tough. He’s also very sweet.

Many of you know that Tim has been THE guy I’ve leaned into at Sacred Craft (and then to become The Boardroom International Surfboard Show) when my wheels are falling off— Tim is steady.

He’s worked for me, as the competition director so to speak, since I think the 3rd or fourth show (?) I can’t remember the exact show, maybe 2009 Sacred Craft at Ventura honoring John Bradbury.

Regardless, we’ve been through a lot together. My wife and I watched Tim & Gina’s boys grow up into fine young men. It’s been a blessing to know the entire Crozier family— and in some ways Tim is a part of our extended family.

Anyway, The Croziers need our help. My help. Your help.

We’re all just one freak accident away from real fiscal distress. I’ve linked the GOFUNDME page in my bio. Please, if you can give a little, give all little. If you can give a lot, give a lot. Thanks. Scott.

Love this board.

ICONIC SHAPER BOB MCTAVISH COMING TO DEL MAR
Foam will be flying October 12th & 13th when the Boardroom International Surfboard Show presented by US Blanks honors legendary shaper and Icon of Foam Bob McTavish.

McTavish and Nat Young, along with California-born kneeboarder-designer George Greenough, had formed the core of the "involvement" school of surfing by mid-1966, and were all looking to ride more actively in and around the curl. As the garrulous McTavish explained, the idea was to "use the power part of the wave, [and] to maneuver really fast without any loss of speed." What Greenough was doing on his low-volume kneeboard—that was how McTavish wanted to ride, but standing up. In early 1967 McTavish began working on a new easy-turning bottom design, and in March he produced the first vee-bottom—a fat-tailed nine-footer with a deep vee-shaped keel through the back third of the board—that he nicknamed the Plastic Machine. He built a series of vee-bottoms over the next seven months, each getting progressively smaller and lighter, dropping all the way down to 7'6" and 14 pounds -- courtesy Matt Warshaw’s Encyclopedia of Surfing.

“I am stoked to be the Boardroom’s 2024 Icon of Foam Honoree,” said McTavish. “It’ll be fun to be back in the States (if I can get back in after my 1963 Stowaway history), and I look forward to seeing everyone in October as we lift up the surfboard building industry and share some great yarns and concepts from my 62 years of loving the game—yehaww!”

This years’ shapers include defending champion Michael Arenal and the East Coast Surf Expo Shape-Off champion Jordan Brazie. McTavish will select the remaining six. At the end of the day this show is about highlighting the designers, shapers, laminators, sanders and artists who build our boards, our sacred crafts. Honoring iconic shapers like Bob McTavish through this competition is one way of doing that.

The show features a massive hall filled with the top surfboard brands including Rusty, Channel Islands, Lost, G&S and Hobie.

Bob McTavish will be the Boardroom’s 23rd honoree.
