Our final ceilidh of the winter season was definitely one to remember. We had pipers, we had dancers, we had singers, we had musicians and we had a storyteller! The evening was opened by the fantastic Aaron Hossain and his talented quartet of pipers, Ewan, Mark, Alasdair B and Alasdair C. We loved this format and we wish them every success in New York at tartan week and the Carnegie Hall 😮 What can we say about the brave wee dancers, many of them performing their pas de basque for the first time. They did it!! Well done to you all 🥰 Our dancers were Gracie, Sophie, Lily, Olivia, Megan, Naomi, Annie and Kenna.
Our main crew of the night were the fabulous prize winning small harmony group Na Seudan. What talent amongst you - we had a waulking song, puirt a beul, tunes from Sweden, Scotland and Brittany, a special appearance from Duncan MacDonald singing a Mull song with his daughter Isla, solos and duets, a singalong set of ceilidh songs, fiddle and piano accompaniment from Ruth and Eilidh and a fabulous story about a giant from Rena who is a storyteller at the Scottish Crannog Centre. I think we will all remember it when the first midges come out! Thank you to Na Seudan members Julie- Anne Macfadyen, Ruth Lunny, Ruth Wells, Eilidh Munro, Miriam Stirling, Rena Gertz, Anna Roberts and Isla Neos. We are so grateful you made the trip to perform for us. Thank you to our Bean an Taighe Joy Dunlop who also joined in the ceilidh medley and gave such great encouragement to the wee ones! Thanks as ever to our friends in the kitchen and on the door and to you all for supporting the ceilidhs this season 🎶 We will see you again soon!

The hall was packed for our February ceilidh featuring Oban Gaelic choir and friends. We heard such a variety of songs from love songs to puirt a beul and songs celebrating beautiful places. The choir sang together and we also had talented and brave soloists from amongst the members including Riona MacCormick, Martin Charlton, Margaret Powell-Joss and Audrey Paterson who also sang a duet with husband Davy. We heard some lovely duets from Mary Catherine MacLean and Christine Hill too. What a treat! Sileas was also busy on the keyboard accompanying beautiful singer Clare Jordan or on the accordion playing with emotional fiddler Joanie Garvin. The youngsters entertained us so much as ever with their amazing music and dance. Alasdair Bullock had only played the pipes for two years but astounded us with his talent and Kenna, Annie and Olivia danced so beautifully for us. We welcomed back Fear an Taighe Duncan MacNeil and we really enjoyed his chat with the performers and his amusing stories! Thanks as ever to all who help us with door duties, baking and serving. Next ceilidh is 15 March 7 pm!

The January ceilidh took place on a cold night but inside the hall was alive with warmth, music and song. Talented young piper Fraser Po***ck opened for us and we hope he’ll come back to play for us again! Lily Robertson has a stunning voice and has performed and won prizes at competitions. It was lovely to hear her again. Taynuilt Ceilidh legend Jake Mackay entertained us on the mouth organ with his last-minute partner in crime Ross MacPherson on the box. Great fun and what talent! Coinneach Combe had travelled far to sing for us with some foot tapping puirt a beul and the rousing Cànan nan Gàidheal. It was a privilege to have Mary Ann Kennedy with us who sang a beautiful song about Taynuilt that she’d set to the words by Iain Crichton Smith and another about cutting bracken by Loch Etive. It was good to hear the piano being played which was donated to the hall by the Taynuilt ceilidhs. In the break we had the usual fantastic spread of sandwiches and cakes! Thanks to all who baked and to Mary in the kitchen, our door helpers and all who make the ceilidhs happen. Finally a big thank you to our Fear an Taighe Danny MacRae for his very amusing anecdotes and stories which raised a smile and for keeping us right on the night. Our next ceilidh is on February 15th.

Our Christmas ceilidh was packed full of festive song, music and dance as we welcomed performers from the local area, Glasgow - and the North Pole! Talented piper Emma Hill opened the evening followed by Isla Munro dancers Annie and Kenna. Gold medallist Mairi Callan entertained us with her singing both unaccompanied and also at the piano with a beautiful original piece. Ann Barlow brought her young fiddlers who played us some Christmas tunes, always so talented and a delight to listen to. Travelling far were clàrsach player Rachel Hair whose repertoire included tunes from the Isle of Man. Double gold medallist Ruairidh Gray had a busy night singing solo as well as singing with Mairi and ceilidh legend Freddie MacKenzie. Fear an Taighe Eric Smith kept us all right on the night. And what can we say about Musical Arms, a Christmas ceilidh favourite game! Everyone enjoyed an evening feast of quiches, sausage rolls, mince pies and shortbread too! Thank you to everyone involved in the kitchen, on the door, our performers for travelling and to Santa for brightening up our night! 🎅🎄

A dull November evening was lit up brightly last night by all the wonderful performers at our second winter ceilidh! ⭐️ Leading the charge was talented piper Libbie Bezuidenhout, followed by captivating wee dancer Annie Bullock. Ann Barlow played us some beautiful fiddle tunes including a haunting Mazurka. Singing superstar Freddie Mackenzie who is always so willing to sing for us was accompanied by Sileas on the accordion. Sileas had a busy night also singing solo at the piano, playing with Ann and performing with the wonderful OHS traditional music school. A Gay Gordons got Moira and Sandy up on the floor! 😊 We’d love the group to come back! What can we say about Aon Ghuth (one voice) the Mòd’s first Makaton choir! Huge congratulations to all the singers and your conductor Morven. You have worked so hard and it was just fantastic to see you perform. The ceilidh was hosted by Bean an Taighe Helen Pearson who also sang and entertained us with her stories - and also just confirmed to us that Oban Mòd had been a resounding success with many local prize winners! 🎉 Special recognition was also given to Moira and Sandy at Oban 2024 for all their work over the years at local and national Mòds! We couldn’t manage with you 🤩Thanks to everyone who helped on the door, in the kitchen and in any other way. See you in December 😀
