Please join us this Tuesday, March 5th at 7pm at Americas Society as we welcome the incredible Ensemble La Chimera - Eduardo Egüez in their program Mare Nostrum with soprano Nell Snaidas! The concert is free, please register at the link below.

One of Europe's leading early music ensembles, Ensemble La Chimera, led by Argentine lutenist Eduardo Egüez and joined by soprano and GEMAS co-curator Nell Snaidas, makes its Music of the Americas debut with Mare Nostrum, a program with baroque music from around the Mediterranean Sea.

The Mediterranean, which witnessed many voyages between Spain and Italy during the 17th century, inspires the repertoire choice, featuring love songs of these two nations, full of affection, passions, and contrasts by Monteverdi, Mazzocchi, Marin, Ortiz, and others.

The early music group joins Music of the Americas with a program of Spanish and Italian baroque music alongside the Uruguayan-American soprano.

This program explores the music of Afro-Caribbean British composer Ignatius Sancho and his contemporaries, highlighting the theme of international circulations — featuring music by black composers Joseph Bologne and Francis Johnson, alongside poetry by Olaudah Equiano and Phyllis Wheatley.

In the eighteenth century, Europe, Britain, and the Americas were home to countless musicians of African origin. While many of these musicians engaged in musical performance, participatory music-making, and other ephemeral forms of “musicking”, a number also became composers who notated or published their music. This evening’s program explores the work of three such composers as well as two black poets.

The evocative phrase Entre dos Álamos is from Lope de Vega’s novel Las fortunas de Diana, in which the envious river Tagus tries to separate two lovers just awakened by the arrival of the new season. It’s just one example of the magnificent music from 16th and 17th century Peru, Bolivia, and Chile that Piffaro’s virtuosic multi-instrumentalists and a stellar cast of singers will bring back to life.
