A new chamber opera in one act
with music and libretto in English by Alice Shields, for soprano, baritone, chorus (SATB, four or more people) and 6 instruments: oboe, harp, piano, violin and cello, with optional partsfor p**a (Chinese lute), and piano reduction. Based on the life of Wang Zhaojun, a Chinese woman who established peace between China and Mongolia in 33 B.C.

, the opera tells of her cure for war and violence: simple acts of kindness. The opera highlights the conflict between patriarchal violence and matriarchal nurturance.

Here's a 5-minute video promo I just finished for my new opera Zhaojün - The Woman Who Saved the World (2018), performed in concert for the first time on Nov.20, 2018. It was really hard to condense the 42-minute video of the opera down to 5 minutes! Hopefully it shows enough of the music and story to make sense. Thanks to the marvelous singers Sharon Harms and Jeremy Huw Williams, to conductor Carl Bettendorf, director Ashley Tata, Ensemble Pi, and the Association for the Promotion of New Music.
