What is Indie rock?

Short for independent rock, is a genre of music that is characterized by its DIY (do-it-yourself) and non-mainstream ethos. It often features bands and artists who are not signed to major record labels and produce music independently or through smaller, independent labels. Indie rock can encompass a wide range of sounds and styles, but it typically emphasizes artistic freedom, authenticity, and a rejection of the commercial constraints often associated with the mainstream music industry. It emerged in the 1980s and has since evolved into a diverse and influential genre with many sub-genres and subcultures.

Returning to Brouhaha for the first time since the first fest, it's our wonderful friends in Grandma's Boys!

Grandma's Boys is a four piece indie pop band out of Louisville, KY that has been steadily gaining fans and exploring the local DIY scene with their unique blend of pop, rock, and rap. With a 'no rules' approach to genre, Grandma's Boys fuse as many influences and styles haphazardly together as they feel necessary and enjoy every minute of their creations.

Get there nice and early on Friday October 7 and catch their set at 5PM, kicking off the fest!

Ending the whole festival with a bang, we have a band unlike any other in the world, from right here in Louisville: The incredible and unforgettable Belushi Speed Ball!

The LEO Weekly may have said it best in describing Belushi Speed Ball: "Watching a Belushi Speed Ball show is a lot like going to a pro wrestling event. There are costumes, outlandish characters and antics, raw energy and the key ingredient: an involved audience. Each show has a theme, which is never repeated, and sometimes it isn’t until the next day that you realize what they pulled off." With every show, Belushi Speed Ball strives to create a playground for those whose imagination may have atrophied, whose sense of playing pretend may have gone dormant, whose inner 12 year-old is aching to get messy and dance in the sun.

And your introduction to Belushi Speed Ball would not be complete without mention of Señor Diablo!

Señor Diablo and Beau Kaelin have been collaborators by force since the inception of Belushi Speed Ball; the latter is at the mercy of the creative whims of the former. Years of filmmaking, makeup and prop construction has made Kaelin the best candidate to help Diablo realize his stageshow ideas, and in turn, Diablo is the worst person imaginable to execute them.
Check out their YouTube channel for the Señor Diablo show and discover the wild adventures of Belushi Speed Ball in the Louisville music scene!

Sweet G & The Shine is coming back to the forest after a dynamite performance a couple weeks back! They'll be playing a midday set at Brouhaha on Saturday.

Sweet G & The Shine is the brainchild of Louisville's songbird Gina C. For years, Gina was trailblazing the local scene, making a name for herself as the co-leader and one of the primary songwriters of soul outfit Zach Longoria Project. After the dissolution of ZLP in 2020, Gina continued to shine as she lent her talent as a backing vocalist for Carly Johnson and Nick Dittmeier and the Sawdusters. Inevitably, her brilliant songwriting was always bubbling under the surface, so creating a space that was wholly her own was the next logical step. Thus, Sweet G & The Shine was born, bring us the boot-stompin'est outlaw soul you ever did hear.

Returning to Brouhaha for their first time since the inaugural fest, it's the incomparable Electric Garden!

Formed in 2015, Electric Garden has gained many fans around Louisville and surrounding regions with their high energy performances. Influences such as The Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers Band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Widespread Panic have been instrumental in finding the band's sound. With their first self-titled release in 2019, there are elements of rock, funk and fusion that encapsulate that sound.

In their tenure playing in Louisville, they have had some great opportunities which include playing WFPK's Waterfront Wednesday, opening for Widespread Panic's very own Jimmy Herring and the Invisible Whip at Headliners Music Hall, and also opening for Twiddle at Gravely Brewing Co.

They'll be playing on Friday October 7 at 8:30PM!

Closing up the Grain Haus Stage on Saturday night is Yellow Cellophane!

Yellow Cellophane was started in 2019 by Hannah Sexton. From 2019-2022 Hannah played local venues as a solo artist, also writing and recording all of her own music from her bedroom.
In March of 2022, Yellow Cellophane became a 4 piece, featuring Michael Moody on drums, Kristian Trapp on lead guitar, Eric Giancola on bass and backup vocals, and Hannah Sexton fronting the band with main vocals and rhythm guitar. They debuted as a four piece at the local music festival "Poorcastle" in May 2022. They are now working on new music they hope to release soon, and are booking shows around the Louisville area.

They play on October 8 at 9:30PM on the Grain Haus Stage!

We're just over a week out from Brouhaha, and we'll be doubling up on our daily features! First we feature Letters of Acceptance!

LETTERS OF ACCEPTANCE is a four-piece rock group based in Lexington and Louisville, Kentucky. It began many years ago as a series of unfinished four-track recordings and casual collaborations between Clint Newman (Bird of Youth, Mendoza Line) and John Norris (Harlan). When both unexpectedly returned to their native Kentucky in 2015 after several years away, the project picked up where it left off. New songs came quickly and recording soon commenced in Clint's Louisville attic with a small number of acoustic duo shows to follow. Shortly thereafter, having added Tim Welch on drums and Scott Whiddon on bass, LOA began releasing an ongoing series of EP’s and playing full band shows.

LOA’s music mines endless corridors of underground rock history to create a form of guitar pop that evokes everything from seventies art-glam and early eighties post-punk to low-fi kiwi pop and cracked psychedelic folk balladry. This eclecticism is tempered by lyrics that find mystery and absurdity in the everyday, guitar melodies that intertwine and meander in equal measure, and harmony singing that reveals their Kentucky roots.

Happy Monday to you all! Today's Brouhaha artist spotlight is Houseplant!

Houseplant was formed during the pandemic in the summer of 2020. Unable to play live, they concentrated their initial efforts on songwriting and the release of their jam-infused Live from the Greenhouse series. Since their live debut in May of 2021 when venues reopened, they have been packing venues with at-capacity crowds and cultivating a growing buzz in the larger jam band community. Houseplant keeps crowds on their toes, with hips shaking, feet moving, heads swaying, souls fed, and minds blown. Houseplant has developed a unique sound characterized by deep rhythmic grooves, rich sonic textures, and patient, collaborative jams and improvisation.

Houseplant will be closing out day 1 of Brouhaha! Don't miss it!

Usually a late night favorite at Brouhaha, Phourist & the Photons returns this year for an early evening set on day 2!

“For me, songs are like a musical exorcism—they come out screaming and I interpret them later on,” says Nick Phourist, of the Louisville, Kentucky-based quartet Phourist & the Photons. They are known for its non-linear songcraft which includes winding musical passages, and adventurous arrangements flanking undeniable pop-rock hooks.

Catch their set on Saturday, October 8 at 6PM on the Forest Stage!

Our first Brouhaha artist spotlight is Full Disclosure!

Full Disclosure is an alternative, psychedelic, progressive rock band, from Louisville, KY. August Kingsley (keys), Lance Oliphant (guitar), and Matthew Oney (bass), Mason Beard (vocals), and Luke Stanton (drums) started out playing cover shows in 2018. The band quickly began writing original content and playing shows, entering into the thriving music scene of Louisville. They released their first singles Entropy and The Tide in 2019, and began carefully crafting their first full album, and took the the lockdown of 2020 as a chance to finally record the record. Following two years of anticipation, the band released their debut LP, Elucidity in July 2021. The album touches on such a wide range of stylistic approaches, making it hard to define, but fully embodies the uniquely accessible psychedelic sound of the band.

Check them out on Saturday, October 8 at 9PM on the Forest Stage!
