R150 000 Booking Fee Is Nothing: Concert Fee Breakdown

I heard many uninitiated trolls crying about an artist getting R15 000 out of a R150 000 booking fee. She was lucky. My nieces/nephews politely requested an exemplary breakdown for an artist on a 350degrees label deal. I have seen artists receive R8 000 out of a R100 000 gig and it is normal. Now here is the breakdown of R150 000 booking fee an artist with a full band on a one day performance gig from JHB to Durban:

- Booking agent fee (10%) = R15 000
- Road Manager fee (5%) = R7500
- Band Costs =R32 000
* Backing vocals/dancers X 4 = R12 000
* Instrumentalists (Bassist, keys, drummer, guitarist, percussionist) = R20 000
- Transportation = R35600
* Flight JHB -Durban Main Artist B-Class = R7 600 (return).
* Flight JHB -Durban Artists E-Class = R13 000 (return).
* Accommodation/Hospitality Artist (5-Star)= R 3 000
* Accommodation/Hospitality X9 (4-Star)= R9 000
* Local Transportation Merc V-Class = R2900.

# # Real Net income = R60 000

- Music Label cut (R50%) = R30 000
- Artist Own Expenses
* Income Tax deductible on R30 000 = R5 400 (at 18%, the tax bracket will creep up to 47% as the artist earn more and creep up the tax bracket. Up to 95% of artists don't pay the tax, they eat it)
* Artist Manager/PA (10%) = R3000
* Performance outfit = R11000
* Make up / beauty = R3000 (Microblading, Nails, hair, makeup, etc).

# # Artist money in the Bank = R10 000

In this account sheet the musician don't owe the label, if the label is owed more deductions will be made. Due to the fact that most musicians live a flashy and expensive lifestyle, the income is not enough to cover their expenses. And they borrow money from the label and go deeper into debt. I hope many start to understand the business. A R150 000 booking has many other expenses (some not even covered here).

Artists who don’t have a professional support structure, especially DJs/indies, prefer the promoter to book flights and hospitality for them. Hence

Bafethu, just an important piece of advice! During this festive season, you will find a lot of people claiming to be artist managers and artist bookings agents. Please verify them before making any form of payment. Check that particular artists’ profile to verify the contact details as the first step. To all the promoters and venue owners, this is serious!

Stop making event promoters feel bad for not booking you. I mean people apply for interviews and they don't get jobs but you won't see them posting trash about the companies.

Not all DJs can be on the same event at the same time, it's ok. You are one in a million.The other million people are also being given an opportunity and that's ok. It's life.

Things event coordinators or hosts didn’t tell you

The cost of doing an event is very high unless you get sponsorship from an investor or Reps from alcohol entities which is very rare

Reps only support or sponsor event where they know gore bailo kereya tjotjo” they will sponsor a “white owned event , pub or club with 100k for eg and come to the hood and want to sponsor with 30k and on top ba nyake tsebetsebe hence our events don’t grow in black communities and they are very biased( black reps )

They are scared of “white club Owned clubs or establishments because they don’t take sh*t” they report them to thier seniors so it’s high time we stand together as event organisers and club owners to report them

When you host an event at a venue you don’t make a lot of money but to cover your costs and leave a with few thousand that won’t even buy you a Gucci Sneaker, car or a house Ebile if y’all are a group it’s even worse because y’all have to split the cut and paying employees

You will have consistent supporters or influencers on the guest list then you get random supporters that claims to come support you but refuse to pay at the gate and inform you that they will buy expensive alcohol but not knowing that if its at a pub or club you don’t get a cut from the alcohol sales but gate takings unless you hired a venue and selling your own alcohol or simply getting a cut from alcohol sales

Pub & club owners also assist here and there with cost which is good but they benefit more than the host

You also get other event organisers that you think you vibe with sabotaging your events and want to host on the same day as you when you released a date first ( it’s a dog eat dog world in this entertainment industry)

Honestly…. Majority of us event organisers are just doing it for the passion and to entertain our supporters

Bathong: 'Arrogant, big-headed Young Stunna dumps gig' – organisers

The owners of Underground Pub in kwaBhaca, previously known as Mount Frere, have expressed their disgust after musician Sandile Msimango, fondly known as Young Stunna, left the establishment without performing.–

According to the pub owners, Young Stunna was booked to perform at the pub at the weekend. However, when he arrived at the venue, he changed his mind.

The amapiano artist allegedly refused to share a table with an artist from the Eastern Cape and complained about the mud, saying he did not want his expensive sneakers to get dirty.

The co-owner of the pub Lwazi Nodada said the Adiwele hitmaker was booked weeks before the event.

However, on Friday his management informed pub owners that they needed to change the musician’s flight.

“When we booked him, we agreed that he was going to land at King Phalo Airport in East London, be driven to kwaBhaca where he was going to perform and go back to Mthatha where we had booked his accommodation,” said Nodada.

“Things, however, changed on Friday because he had accepted another gig.”

ARTISTS , PROMOTERS & PATRONS have an obligation to protect South Africa’s Entertainment Industry, if there was ever a time where common ground and unity was needed it is now, South Africa is in a big crisis in terms of financial security & Stability …. This thing of fighting against each other will do more harm than good for everyone involved… I need you, you need me, we are all a part of this industry and it’s survival depends on each other meeting halfway…. My event creates over 300 Jobs and if one day it dies then 300 families wouldn’t have food around Christmas season, if I book artists and not find 300 people to work at my event, the thousands who attend my event would drag me on social media for receiving bad service, if one day I mistreat artists and disrespect their contracts I will lose credibility when they decide not to pitch so all in all WE ALL NEED TO WORK TOGETHER to put bread on the the table.

I want to host a paying gig and book artist from the local artists . But here is how the payment is going to work. Each person that pays at the door must write down the name of the artist they're there to specifically watch. Then each artist gets payed according to crowd they pull , since ni**as can't perform for free on other fellow artists events. I think it's fair enough since their excuse is that they are pulling the crowd.
