Final Fun a Day Dundee

Sloth

So I chose Sloth as my final image - thanks to Liz Stewart for the suggestion. 🦥

I chose this as the final subject because they’re just bonkers and the thought of painting one made me smile - which was part of the impetus for taking part in ‘Fun a Day Dundee’. If you’ve not seen one in action I highly recommend watching some footage - they are just so uncanny valley it’s slightly off the scales. Very old man vibes with very carefully considered movements and an enigmatic smile. Strangely beautiful and hypnotic with humour.

My ode to Sloth.

Pigeon Pair

So I might have mentioned that I appear to be doing pairs. This is the companion of the pigeon painted at the beginning of the month - slight differences. More of a purple hue and feathery fluffy legs.

Shaman Cat

You may have spotted a Collie in the collection a few images back. Well this is his companion. I seem to be wanting to pair these pictures, so a counterpart often appears. The cat this card is based on is very assured and although friendly it’s on his terms. He has a very regal air.

I do love cats.

I was having a chat with a friend last night about these, and they imagined them as large images, so to give an idea of scale these wee paintings are 10cm by 6.5cm. So are pretty small - roughly the size of a playing card. I like that they’re bijou.

Here seen on my desk, which I’ve tried to use consistently as the background for them.

Sacred Heart

Not really sure why this popped up in my thoughts, but the aim was to have the deep red against the blue - I love the Mexican images and am sure I’ll revisit this motif at some point - it’s left me wondering about the symbolism of the different elements.

Primrose

My parents had a wee woodland behind their house and primroses always remind me of my mum. She had a very 1930’s vision of the world which is reflected in the colour palette - mum loved the woodland and her ashes are still there, which apparently is not ideal for the tree we placed them under.

Snowdrop

This took an eternity to decide on and I was having one of those ‘I can’t draw days’ so was tempted to throw in the towel a few times. I bounced between different ideas got caught up in the notion of trying to map the layout of the grid and make it all look nice… it refused. I’d seen a snowdrop and been delighted by it - so thought that it would be apt. I wanted that weird misty green - like frosty mornings have. Today everything is shrouded in misty icy fog and all the colours have a white overlay like the world has a filter on.

Border Collie

I was out at a friends house at the weekend and we went for a walk with their Collie - I love Collies. Not sure if I’d be much good at keeping one myself as they are super intelligent and could literally be out on the hills all day. However I do know that my great grandparents had at least one - and there’s just something I find absolutely gorgeous about the breed. Very communicative. So I decided to paint one.

The paintings are all on Fabriano paper and the same dimensions, which is quite small. It allows me the enjoyment of knowing I can do it in a chunk of time and then move on.

Katie’s Pig

I’ve had a life long love of Charlottes Web - it is perhaps the most beautiful story of friendship and both broke my heart and simultaneously reminded me of how special friends can be.

Pigs are rather special - they too have a history very entwined with ours, and there’s nothing cuter than a piglet who’s excited with being alive. So here is one such maybe oracular pig (hen wen reference) enjoying life.

Painted for Katie.

Rose

I’ve always loved the imagery of the rose, though perhaps a peony is more of my original child like vision of them. In a similar way to when I was a child I thought wine would taste like velvety black currants…

Seal

I think I may have unintentionally created a chimera and fused an otter and a seal together…. I love both creatures and had otter in my mind too - but seal was the chosen creature.

I feel like a lot of these drawings are reflecting on childhood and stories. A magical moment when seals barked to chorus in the morning heralded my freedom and symbolised letting go. Mother and child - liquid eyes and skin shedding. It’s all there in the mix.

Rest

At the moment I’m able to rest, it’s winter and I feel the need to take some time to simply be. This world is so busy and I feel like we don’t allow for the seasonal shift that occurs at this time.

So here is my homage to rest. Around my house can be found various mice - some of them riding in hot air balloons and others vanquishing dragons. So here - channeling some Bramley Hedge vibes is a wee creature coorieing in.

Snail

I find these little critters fascinating - there’s a theme there though. I find a lot of things fascinating. But these really are my first nature loves, as a small child I spent many happy hours finding as many as I could in the garden and setting up snail races. They rarely behaved and even when set along planks they would criss cross all over the place.

There’s still a part of me that connects these little characters with the magic of childhood and imagination. Snail glue and the steeds of faerie folk. I have a very early drawing I did of one hidden away, which apparently was infested with little white mites.

Revisiting childhood on the back of a snail.

Kiki Kat - Aka the drummer cat

My cats came to me by the cat distribution system that is apparently a thing.

Their owners were away on holiday and all the cats were out - and hungry. All the cats means about eight of them and unfortunately we had accidentally killed a beautiful giant male Tom cat who had run towards us down the middle of the road (We were bizarrely in a van full of giant dog sculptures collecting them up from a sculpture trail). It was a horrible moment and the only option was to check on the Cat and take it to the nearest house, all the lights were off and there were literally cats everywhere. I tried the door a few times, but it was obvious that no one was in and there were cats everywhere. Including two kittens that refused to leave me alone. Every-time I went back to the van these tiny balls of fluff followed me out onto the road. So I picked them up eventually and gave the chaps in the van a surprise.

I took them back the next day as it would have felt wrong otherwise and I wanted to talk to the owners. The children of the household had been hand rearing them as the kittens mother had also died. A week later I brought the kittens - as said I’d give them a loving home if they chose to go that route. Can’t imagine life now without them.

Fun a Day Dundee

I have no idea what this little critter is apart from a type of moth (or what day it is). When I was an apprentice learning to tattoo we did versions of these with skulls, but I was in the mood for something more delicate - iridescent white in the background. Pretty.

Maybe it’s connected with Transformation?
Butterflies are the ultimate symbol for undergoing great change. I feel very much in my cocoon state at the moment - resting.

Recently rediscovered the Dalai Lama and Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu talking about Joy - so am going to have a listen. I highly recommend watching them if you get time - their childlike laughter and gentle ribbing of each other is a joy to watch.

Fox

It always seems if I draw a hare a fox must come along soon after. A few years ago now I lived in Chichester in the South of England and one day happened to notice that a fox was basking in my back garden. Completely surrounded by houses, with all their potential risks and was just taking that time to chill - no sign of fear. It was so beautiful to see nature so close in a suburban setting.

Mr Fox was a delight, and when I think of them I think of that childlike delight of enjoying the sun and basking.

So here he is Mr Fox - or maybe Mrs we were never formally introduced.

Fun a Day Dundee

And the Cat came back… fortunately Noodle came home safely. Otherwise known privately to myself as McFluff or Mr Fluff (my son named him Noodle). He’s ridiculously pretty and has a grey heart on his side in real life just to really cement the fact that yes, this is a pretty cat. Here immortalised and eventually I’ll pair this with Kiki, who is the drummer cat and his sister.

Also you may spot a bit of a style change - I love folk art - especially polish, but grew up near a canal and used to practise painting roses in my youth.

Hare Mobile

I created flying wooden Hares over twenty years ago which is a bit of a shocker. The post of the Snow Hare earlier brought them to mind - I used to sell them in a lovely wee shop in Dunkeld run by the husband of a local artist (the shop was called ZigZag). Was a super cute shop - often wonder where my hares have ended up.
