Who is CHIC cotton candy? I knew I wanted to create a whole new way of experiencing cotton candy with a modern cart, gourmet flavors & luxe styling. We debuted the cart to the Boston market one year ago this month. Alongside Anthony, I am very humbled by what we have been able to experience this year running CHIC. It has given us an incredible opportunity to work hard & raise the bar in the wedding & corporate event space.
This creativity has proven to be fruitful as CHIC has served up sweets for giant brands like Neiman Marcus, Alice + Olivia, Moncler & Nordstroms. As well as for iconic institutions such as Harvard, Northeastern University & MFA Boston.
In one year, CHIC had:

✨23 birthdays
✨15 showers
✨12 weddings
✨11 parties
Not to mention opening CHIC in Vegas!! 🎲
However, not everyone sees through the pretty "Pinterest-worthy" pictures you post—all the weeks & months of your life spent agonizing over every single detail of your brand. The Emily in Paris shoot pushed the design envelop for us... and the iconic Langham Hotel in Boston was the perfect muse!

We fashioned a black cart with gold accents— a subtle nod to the same elements of traditional 18th-century decor, accents, and antiques seen throughout the hotel.

The Langham Hotel is also well-known for its signature shade of pink. It has always integrated the color throughout its experiences, so our custom cart was styled with the sweetest little pink & white striped awning— the perfect touch, don’t you think?

The Grande Lincoln ballroom boasts natural light, classic neutral tones, contemporary touches, and elegant chandeliers; creating the perfect backdrop for our little luxe cotton candy cart. The Best is Yet to Come
It seems not long ago that I created MASON & MADISON. It started in 2003 as a home-based gift basket business and was named after my two children: Mason (my son) and Brooke Madison (my daughter). At the tender ages of 3 and 4 and as a single mother, my kids were the inspiration to choose an entrepreneurial journey. It's been over a decade since I embarked on what's become an unforgettable journey. They are now 17 and 18 years old! This school year will mark Brooke’s graduation and transition to college, and next year, Mason’s final year of vocational-technical training as an Electrician, all major milestones… ones a mother can be proud of!
My amazing fiancée Anthony has provided the unconditional love, patience and support I needed to launch Mason & Madison from an idea to reality. Not all partners want to play a support role but he knew I was someone who had a deep passion and he wasn't afraid to nurture it. I love what I’ve built...what we’ve built, together. I have found, through close to fifteen years of amazing shop-keeping experiences, that I love entrepreneurship, being self-employed, and the revelatory work of branding and marketing
My family is evolving and the fact that I want to explore new options is proof enough for me: my ride on the retail ferris wheel has come to an end. Satisfyingly, happily, and just at the right time. I am announcing MASON & MADISON will be closing. These words are bittersweet for me to write, as they mark both the end of an extremely fulfilling chapter and hopefully the start of an exciting brand new one.
THIS IS NOT GOODBYE!
In the coming weeks, I will likely have visitors to the store mention to me that they are sorry (for me) for the store closing. All good and beautiful intentions because that's exactly how our customers are -- caring and empathetic. And to them, as well as anyone else feeling the same... please don't be sorry. I'm not sorry at all! It's the right time to move on to the next chapter of my life and focus on a new adventure.
AND SO, THE ADVENTURE BEGINS…
I believe independent retailers in all types of brick and mortar businesses are the unsung heroes of this nation’s economy. They’ve got one of the toughest jobs in the neighborhood. Just trying to woo people to occasionally pass up a big box store and visit their well-curated little shops is hard enough, never mind all the other stuff that the average customer doesn’t even realize goes on behind the scenes. This carefully constructed theatre is part of the magic and romance of shop-keeping. It’s part of what draws newbie shop owners into the biz in the first place, and what most customers mean when they say they’d “love to do something like this someday.” More importantly, it’s part of creating a seamless and relaxing shopping experience for the customer. Independent retailing has never been for the faint of heart. These are interesting times for the retail industry. As the growth of online retail continues to advance, the market will eventually find the equilibrium between online and brick-and-mortar. Retail isn’t dying, it’s constantly evolving. And with that being said… I’m excited to launch something NEW very soon! Every end is a new beginning and I am certain I will stay in your life. Please follow my next steps, I am excited to share them with you soon!
So, there it is… a hard-to-explain update that feels great to have off my chest, a “good-bye” that could ultimately be more of a “never say never,” and the beginning of a new set of challenges that have me looking forward to the next phase of my life and career.
I will miss you all and I can’t thank you enough for supporting my little boutique over the past 14 years and I am truly excited to take on the next years with you guys by my virtual side. Cheers to a new chapter!
