A tribute to GANGA
It took years of penance for Bhagiratha to bring the Ganga down on earth, restrained by Shiva’s dreadlocks. Veteran actor and politician Hema Malini, who has essayed the role of Durga, Radha, Mahalakshmi and Draupadi on stage previously, had to wait four years for Ganga. Her dance ballet, chronicling the journey of the river, premiered at Varanasi on January 22.
“It was Sushma Swaraj (External Affairs Minister) who suggested we unveil it on Bhartiya Pravasi Diwas. She commissioned music directors and set designers immediately. She also roped regular choreographer, Bhushan Lankandri, while the concept and script is her.
The river has been an integral part of India’s history and finds mention in the ancient texts, including the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. “Ganga went by many names, including Janhvi, Alakananda, Mandakini and Bhagirathi. There is story behind every name. Historian Ram Govind ji has researched the project and we also have inputs from Devdutt Pattnaik, the author of many mythological novels such as 7 Secrets of Shiva and Jaya: An Illustrated Retelling of the Mahabharat,” explains Malini, adding: “The river has been around since Sat Yug when she was brought to the earth by the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. In the Treta Yug, she met Ram and in the Dwapar Yug, Krishna. She has seen it all and the ballet showcases Indian history seen through the eyes of Ganga.”
