Come join us in the ancient wetlands of Boorloo, and dance and twirl on the same ancient boodja of those who came before us paying homage to First Nations trailblazers and LGBTQIA+ trailblazers alike.

The theme and title of this event represents the season of Makuru (the wet season on Noongar Boodja) and the deep connection Noongar/First Nations peoples have with the waterways - specifically on Noongar Boodja the Derbarl Yerrigan (swan river) as the resting place of the Noongar creation spirit the Waugal. It also acknowledges the wetlands that existed prior to colonisation - that the Perth (Boorloo) CBD now sits on top of.

💜 MEET THE ARTIST 💜

Hi, I'm Lima, Artist in Residence at Remida WA, and exhibitor at Strange Festival 2024.

For this festival, I built a three-metre Western Ground Parrot, viewed through creepy orange bushfire-simulation masks. 🎭

As a zoo volunteer, I was inspired by the story of the 2015 bushfire which destroyed 80% of the parrots' remaining habitat (leaving just 140 individuals in the wild). Kyloring rocketed to the top of the list as one of Australia's most critically-endangered birds. With feral cats and foxes on high predation, extinction seemed imminent. ⚰️

Whereas much environmental messaging is about hope for the future, forbthis artwork I deliberately kept the vibe darker by reminding people how easily life can be extinguished. 🔥💀

I only use reclaimed and repurposed materials, and I have a personal aversion to glue (I prefer tape, bandages, string and cable ties). Kyloring is made from:
- plastic document holders💼
- computer motherboard packaging ⌨️
- a cafe blind salvaged from a neighbour's home renovations☕
- fruit n veg disposable transit trays, 🍑and
- thousands of tiny pieces of hand-cut cloth tape✂️ .

In the 8 weeks I spent at Remida's studio warehouse, I also made banners, signage, lettering, a loom activity station, and four kaleidoscopes! ♻️ 😊

This is my second year exhibiting at Strange Festival and it is always an honour to be given full creative control over a large space, in this instance, an abandoned shop in the Carillon Arcade overlooking Forrest Place. 👻The rest of the abandoned shop has been decked out with other interactive artworks of mine, including:
- Loom With A View
- Elizabeth Quay Orphanage
- Giant Wings (decor on loan from Remida, reimagined into a wings selfie-spot activity by me)
- Birdcage Mailbox

I'm hoping to tour Kyloring to metropolitan and regional communities; engaging more people to See Conservation Differently. 🔥🦜

💜 GETTING READY FOR STRANGE FESTIVAL 💜

I haven't posted much because I've been beavering away, many hours a day, in the art studio of as their Artist In Residence. Getting ready to exhibit at 14-23 June!

Working with repurposed materials is such a joy. 🥰

For me, one of the thrills is in balancing between "I have surplus amounts of X because it's discards and no one wants it" and at the same time , holding onto the thought: "I only have THIS limited amount of Z, and once it's gone, I can't just go out and buy more".

A lot of the time the items choose me. Today I worked with dichroic film for the First time (something I purchased, not reclaimed), but instead of using it for its intended purpose as a window film or privacy/glass covering, I combined it with acrylic offcuts, aluminium lettering, and holographic safety tape, to make signage (will show you results in a separate post).

But when I looked at all the crazy-shaped offcuts of this beautiful rainbow-hued adhesive decal, I just knew I could not let these pieces go to waste.

Cruised around the warehouse looking at CLEAR OBJECTS to maximise the effects of the material (I often work to a theme, and this year's theme is TRANSLUCENCE). Suddenly, There, in the "poles and sticks" pile: four l o n n n n g square outer boxes from a venetian blind.

Measuring and cutting the film into long thin shapes then watched a super helpful YouTube video on how peeel the backing off window film without losing your mind (the trick is ordinary STICKY TAPE) !!

The harder I tried to steer or push the film onto a surface, the more it bubbled and stiffened. The softer I breathed into it, pulling the backing off slower and consistently, the kinder the adhesive was to lay on flat.

In less than 1 hour I had made 4 rudimentary kaleidoscopes out of a curtain accessories box + offcuts of dichroic window film. I am very proud of myself 😎.

Soothe yourself this weekend at the fabulous outdoor Bassendean Markets! 🌸

Did you know markets are one of my all-time favourite types of gigs ?? I love being part of the ambience! Those little smiles that light up people's faces when they recognise a song they love, heads bopping as they walk around, taking the time to sit and relax in the sun before heading home ... I LIVE for that gentle kind of audience feedback. That's my jam!! 🍓

I'll be there all day, pawing through retro faves and catchy tunes. Just don't get between me and the community sausage sizzle! 😆

Also, there is a rumour that I MAY arrive, on public transport, dressed as a tiger. ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯

💟 BACK TO THE BASICS 💟

With the big events season mostly over (and my current focus on building the next art installation - more on that in another post!), I just wanted to drop a quick note to say how much I've loved the warm community DJ gigs coming through right now.

I'm seeing the heartfelt ways that smaller audiences connect with each other on sweet little dancefloors (especially when a costume box is involved!). 💝

I'm seeing people grateful for summer vibes in autumn 😉.

I'm seeing less drinking and more dancing. 🌠

As a DJ who works with so many diverse audiences, genres, and types of gigs, it's truly a delight to be part of people's simple pleasures. No big gimmicks, no melodrama, just stitching together track after track of good-natured, body-wigglin' fun! 🍬

Do you remember what you loved about dancing in the first place? Let's party smarter, not harder! Perhaps it's time to get back to the basics. 😉

Hello, Lima here, with a little update from National Volunteer Week!

I couldn't let this week go by without saying a very public and heartfelt THANK YOU ... to the absolutely amazing people who donate their time, skills and efforts to help make all my high-energy music & arts projects happen.

Some of you have been riding shotgun with me since day dot; others I met more recently since returning to Perth ... through the festival circuit, the q***r community, music scene, or Fringe... or just getting swept up in it all!

When I think about how committed some of you have been to the cause - wrangling 43 degree days, 9am Sunday starts, 4am finishes, being dirty, dusty, covered in sticks and leaves, and bravely being paired to work with people you've never met before! - oh I do get a bit emotional because that means you trust me (and my sometimes-chaotic leadership) to keep you safe and engaged and valued in your chosen role as a volunteer.

I had a look at the Australian Bureau of Statistics - one in seven Australians spends time outside of their regular employment in volunteering. That's huge! When we step back and look at the exhibits we've built together, I am so very proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with my volunteers as a team, and that is a huge reason why I love working in the arts so much. A conductor is nothing without their orchestra!

Volunteers, this is your week. Thank you for all that you do.

☂️ MY FIRST ARTIST RESIDENCY ☂️

Hi folks, Lima here... BIG NEWS!! Super chuffed to be joining forces with the sustainable resource centre REmida Perth as their next Artist-In-Residence.😄

From 22 April to 9 June 2024, I'll be working from their studio, building interactive games and event decor out of re-purposed industrial offcuts. ✂️

Remida have a small warehouse in West Perth where a dedicated team of volunteers sorts discards from the commercial sector, then makes them available as art & education supplies to schools, artists, and the general public. It's super-affordable at $70 per person per year! A meaningful and cost-effective way of keeping things out of landfill. ♻️

I have always believed that "the best feeling is when you get to see yourself in the art", and that's what drives me to create in-person experiences where the audience's contributions ARE what makes the artwork special & unique. No two engagements with a Lima Brightlove exhibit are ever the same. ⭐

🚲 RING MY BELL 🚲

One of my FAVOURITE annual events to spin tunes at, isn't even a party or festival. It's a 2 hour outdoor gig, on a Saturday morning, from 9am to 11am, that helps promote bike-riding in the community. 😁

"Open Streets" is hosted by the good folks at . They close off a small section of a busy road (thanks !) and chuck on a huge variety of cycling-related activities, suitable for all ages. Last year they had tri-shaw rides for people who thought they were too old for cycling! And this year there was a cool obstacle course and a diagnostics & repair station 🔧

If you're nervous about getting back on the bike, afraid of traffic, or your deadly-treadly is in woeful condition... there's adult classes, and practical non-judgemental help at hand from . Some of the nicest peeps I've ever come across in all my years of doing community events 😊

Oh, and in case you were wondering why I love these wholesome types of DJ gigs so much? My former career was in Community Development, working for councils and non-profit organisations. It's been a wonderful ride (RIDE, get it? little joke !! 😆) to go from organising these community events to putting my heart into creating the musical atmosphere that helps make them a success. 💛💚💙

Last night's debut at the new bar Spring On Queen! What an awesome venue 😀. I got to do what I do best: PLAY PARTY TUNES 🎉

Full credit to all the LEGENDS who packed out the dancefloor from 10pm - close. At 1.20am it was still heaving, and I was wondering whether anyone actually had plans to go home at all 😆

Steady stream of visitors to the desk all night, here are some of my favourite comments:

🎼 HAS YOUR DJ EVER STUDIED MUSIC? 🎼

Ask any professional DJ at the top of their game and they will tell you that the best DJs are also qualified musicians, often proficient in a variety of instruments, and have a strong background in Music Theory.

Here's a bit about where I came from:

✅ Orchestral percussion (TEE, equivalent to AMEB 7th grade)
✅ Classical piano (AMEB 7th grade)
✅ Music theory (AMEB 5th grade)
✅ Violin (Suzuki Method, 4 years)
✅ Audtioned for WAAPA
✅ Performed at Perth Festival twice
✅ West Australian Wind Orchestra, Fremantle Symphony Orchestra, Perth Concert Band, plus as a sessional musician for many other community music groups
✅ Mezzo soprano with Melville Youth Choir, and assorted ensembles
✅ Guest jazz vocalist with Applecross Swing Band

How does this translate to DJing?

▶️ Enormous repertoire
▶️ Highly versatile (not just 1 hour sets)
▶️ Fearless approach to music - jack of all genres
▶️ Works well with others on-stage
▶️ Works well with stage managers, roadies, artist liaisons, set builders, directors, caterers, etc
▶️ Mixes in key (this means mixing different songs which have complementary harmonies and melodies so they sound smooth and don't clash!)
▶️ Strong aural skills
▶️ Excellent microphone technique (NO FEEDBACK)
▶️ Engaging stage presence. A little showmanship goes a long way!
▶️ Capable of ad libbing and improvising ("The Show Must Go On")
▶️ Resourcefulness (Macguyvering when equipment fails)
▶️ Practicality (A good working DJ can carry her own speakers and rig up her own PA! No heels! No long nails!)

⭐ INTRODUCING LIMA BRIGHTLOVE ⭐

People always want to know "What's your DJ name??"

In 2000, my first DJ name was "Miss Flea" (nothing to do with pest control!). Then in 2006 when I co-founded the first "rave cave" at Dunsborough Leavers, I changed it to "Lady Lemur".

For many years I worked under the quiet title "Special Events DJ". I made a name for myself as a serious Go-To person: DJing hundreds of weddings, fashion shows, birthdays, markets, exhibitions, community fetes, school discos, plus conferences (all over Australia). I moved to Melbourne, landed a contract with Melbourne International Comedy Festival, and was living the dream.

Then, COVID happened. And overnight, every single industry I worked in - Music, Weddings, Events, Travel, Touring - ceased to exist.

I burned through all my savings just trying to pay rent and buy food. So I moved back to Perth, and rebranded as Party Tunes, to focus on upbeat events. Some of the amazing supporters who helped me get back on my feet are reading this post right now. Know I am forever thankful for your efforts.

But in a strange twist of fate, after reincarnating as Party Tunes, I found myself offered - and then thoroughly enjoying - DJing ambient & chillout sets.

My dream had always been to play a sunrise session at a multi-day camping festival, just as everyone is waking up to ease them into a new day. I fulfilled this dream on New Year's Day 2021.

Something changed in me. And after being so well-known for slinging d-floor bangers, in 2023 I then spread my creative wings into building art installations.

I wanted to build ultimate chillout zones. Inclusive and welcoming spaces. All the love - and none of the unhealthy hippie woo-woo or toxic positivity - where people could stay for as long as they wanted.

My first walk-thru exhibit made it onto radio, newspapers & TV.

My second attempt, I coordinated decorating the entire Rechabite building (four venues) for Pride.

My third: we won Best Venue.

With the expansion of my creative work beyond DJing/music, I felt it was time to evolve.

I'm still rocking the parties, and now I'm doing so much more.

OH MY GOSH Who knew that playing requests all night could be so much fun!? 😛

That's exactly what we did - in longform - at BYO Vinyl 🏵️

Ordinary folks brought in their own LP or EP record(s) and the host (MEEE) played an entire side of the record from start to finish. 🍥

The skill in hosting is knowing what order to play the requests in, so that the night still has a bit of style and flow to it! As well as bringing your own LPs/EPs to showcase the vinyl that you want to share with the world. 🤗

After a nervous hesitant slow start, I found my stride when I followed my heart and put on Stevie Wonder 😁 Then took everyone on an extended-play journey through the 90s and 00s.
