I used to think the inner critic was just something I had to silence, crush, or push away.
But here’s what I’ve learned: the critic doesn’t vanish just because you try to drown it out. It only softens or changes when you shift your relationship with it.
When I began teaching about the inner critic, I noticed how much fear showed up in the room. We all know that voice. We all know how sharp it can be. But when we approached it with curiosity instead of shame, something cracked open. People realized it was old stories that had coagulated to make a new voice.
That voice isn’t the truth. It’s a protector who thinks it’s keeping you safe.
Listening without obeying — that’s where freedom starts. When you can acknowledge, and let go, move through, or have it step aside, whether by using Riddikulus or Inner Defenders, you’ll find more space to breathe.
